Scyllarides obtusus spec. nov., the scyllarid lobster of Saint Helena, Central South Atlantic (Crustacea: Decapoda Reptantia: Scyllaridae) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
A new species of slipper lobster is described from Saint Helena, where the species seems to be endemic. Known under the vernacular name Stump, the species forms the subject of a local fishery, carried out since early times. Previously the species has been identified with various Scyllarides species from the Atlantic and East Africa.

Some remarks on the systematical value of the male hypopygium in Fungivoridae Naturalis
Barendrecht, G..
In spite of the many discussions on this subject, both in literature and meetings of entomological societies, a considerable controversy exists between those entomologists who, for determination, readily resort to a comparison of the hypopygia, this being too often the only part of the insect offering satisfactory species characters, and those who consider this practice beneath the dignity of scientific entomology. As it happened that the writer in the course of several years had to do much work on Fungivoridae, he had ample opportunity to become familiar with this problem.

Amphibians in Western Asturia Naturalis
Veenstra, Geert.
In the spring of 1980, from the end of March till in July, I visited the eastern part of the Spanish province of Oviedo and the adjacent part of the province of Leon. The main subject of investigation during this period was the species Rana temporaria (Veenstra 1981). I tried to find out where this species could be found and while doing so I determined the occurrence of more species of amphibians. Totally twelve species of amphibians could be observed. Characteristics of their reproduction sites are listed and worked out below.

Books received by the Rijksherbarium library Naturalis
NN.
The eleventh issue of this series gives 26 sheets with coloured and/or black-and-white photographs of 11 unidentified and 16 identified species of Ectomycorrhizae. The morphology is extensively described. Several keys are given for the identification of ectomycorrhiza with respect to the tree genera Abies, Alnus, Betula, Carpinus, Corylus, Cyclobalanopsis, Elaeocarpus, Eucalyptus, Fagus, Larix, Nothofagus, Pasania, Picea, Pinus, Populus, Pseudotsuga, Quercus, Salix, Shorea, Tetraberlinia, and Tsuga. Again, this issue adds a lot of very useful information on the subject, and is of great value for ectomycorrhizal research.

Avian biogeography on western Indian Ocean islands: eustatic sea levels, geological events and anthropogenic changes Naturalis
Hume, J.P..
The south-western Indian Ocean islands, excluding the microcontinent of Madagascar, are geologically complex and diverse. They have been subject to drastic sea level changes, volcanic events and anthropogenic changes, all of which have contributed to confuse understanding of their avian biogeography. An array of factors have affected these avifaunas, based on palaeontological, historical and molecular evidence, which together have shown that avian biogeography is not congruent with the relative age and size of the islands.

The limestone flora of Malaya. Under this title, Mr. S. C. Chin submitted a M.Sc. thesis in typescript in March 1973 at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Supervisor was Dr. B.C. Stone. Hitherto, Henderson’s work of 1939 was the only study on the subject, with 745 spp. in all, about 195 of them known only from limestone, 130 of them endemics. Since exploration started in 1880, sixty collectors (listed) have gathered

In Memoriam Dr. M. Jacobs Naturalis
Kalkman, C..
Dr. Marius Jacobs, a senior staff member of the Rijksherbarium, died suddenly on 28 April 1983, following a heart attack some days earlier. He was only 53 years old and his death came as a great shock, not only to his colleagues at our institute. Jacobs was a many-sided man with interests in many fields. In each of these he held definite opinions which were based on a thorough knowledge of the subject. So he could not easily be shaken from his views when it came to a discussion.

The Blattidae of Surinam Naturalis
Bruijning, C.F.A..
In the earliest papers on neotropical Blattidae a fair number of specimens from Surinam were recorded (LINNAEUS, DE GEER ¹), DE SAUSSURE, BRUNNER). But in the period from the beginning of this century up to now only a few scattered reports of Blattidae from that region have appeared in the literature of the subject. The present article will be the first to deal exclusively with Surinam species. The material dealt with in this paper was mainly secured by DR. D. C. GEIJSKES between 1938 and 1955. His extensive travels both in the coastal area and far into the interior of Surinam enabled him to collect all over the country.

The vessels in the wood of Javan Mangrove trees Naturalis
Janssonius, H.H..
In the course of my study on the wood-anatomy of Javan woods (Mikrographie des Holzes der auf Java vorkommenden Baumarten), I examined also many woods from mangrove-trees. Mangrove has been the subject of much investigation; the community is usually described as xeromorphic. Mangrove woods proved to be different from woods belonging to species growing in other stations even if those species belonged to the same family or even genus. The data may be traced in my “Mikrographie” but it seems more convenient to review them here.

Further observations on fossil and subfossil Odobenid material (Mammalia, Carnivora) from the North Sea Naturalis
Bosscha Erdbrink, D.P.; Bree, P.J.H. van.
Six cranial and two postcranial fossil and subfossil odobenid remains that have come to our notice since our 1986 paper on the same subject are described and discussed. One of these can, with some confidence, be identified as Odobenus antverpiensis (Rutten, 1907). The others either belong to the recent species, Odobenus rosmarus (Linnaeus, 1758), or should simply be identified as Odobenus species. Some remarks are made on the morphological differences between antverpiensis (perhaps identical with huxleyi) and rosmarus.

Early Phanerozoic trace fossils from the Sierra Albarrana quartzites (Ossa-Morena Zone, Southwest Spain) Naturalis
Marcos, A.; Azor, A.; González, F.; Simancas, F..
Three ichnogenera are described from a 50 to 500 m thick shallow-water sandstone-shale sequence (Sierra Albarrana Quartzites). The ichnofauna consists of the burrows of worm-like animals (Arenicolites, Monocraterion, and Skolithos). The age of this formation, previously considered to be Precambrian or Palaeozoic, has been the subject of discussions. We may now assign it an Early Phanerozoic age, in agreement with the known stratigraphic distribution of the ichnofossils found.

Maarel, F.H. van der.
In connection with the particular nature of the present subject not only those publications have been used, which deal with the original type specimens or which mention the discovery from another locality, but also every publication in which new remains of the species have been described ¹). In general no use has been made of preliminary notes. An exception had to be made for those notes which hitherto have not been followed by definite descriptions.
