Asari (= Manila) clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, is the second bivalve mollusc in terms of production in the world and, in many coastal areas, can beget important socio-economic issues. In Europe, this species was introduced after 1973. In Arcachon Bay, after a decade of aquaculture attempt, Asari clam rapidly constituted neo-naturalized population which is now fished. However, recent studies emphasized the decline of population and individual performances. In the framework of a national project (REPAMEP), some elements of fitness, stressors and responses in Arcachon bay were measured and compared to international data (41 publications, 9 countries). The condition index (CI=flesh weight/shell weight) was the lowest among all compared sites. Variation in... |

The common dentex, Dentex dentex, is a fish species which inhabits marine environments in the Mediterranean and Northeast Atlantic regions. This is an important species from an ecological, economic and conservation perspective, however critical information on its population genetic structure is lacking. Most samples were obtained from the Mediterranean Sea (17 sites) with an emphasis around Corsica (5 sites), plus one Atlantic Ocean site. This provided an opportunity to examine genetic structuring at local and broader scales to provide science based data for the management of fishing stocks in the region. Two mitochondrial regions were examined (D-loop and COI) along with eight microsatellite loci. The COI data was combined with publicly available... |

We describe an emerging pathology, brown muscle disease (BMD), which specifically affects the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum in Arcachon Bay (France). BMD induces a transformation of the posterior adductor muscle, which becomes infused by conchiolin and calcified, reducing the ability of clams to bury. The disease affects both types of muscular tissue, with striated muscle becoming affected to a higher degree than smooth muscle. Two indices were created to quantify the symptoms: the Muscle Print Index, used for empty and live shells, and the Final Disease Index, utilized for live clams only. Histological sections were made and observed under light microscopy to examine the muscular damage and to investigate a causal agent. Sections revealed an... |

This document present the pollack part of the study Striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus), whiting (Merlangius merlangus) and pollack (Pollachius pollachius) are three species for which individualization of stocks is advanced by ICES in western Europe for areas including the Bay of Biscay and the areas bordering the Iberian peninsula. Since 2012, ICES has provided recommendations with regards to these stocks. These recommendations are given for two‐year periods and are based on an approach adopted by ICES in 2012 in the case of insufficient data for an analytical evaluation (Data Limited Stocks, DLS). For 2013 and 2014, ICES recommended reducing catches by 20% as a precautionary measure compared to 2009‐2011 for the three stocks. Considering that TACs are... |

A spatial sampling was carried out for stock assessment of sea urchin P. lividus throughout the Basque coast. A sampling, over the year, was conducted to study the reproductive cycle. This work took place over 2013 and 2014. Reproduction occurs once in spring, between May and August 2014. Among factors affecting the release of eggs, salinity, temperature and hydrodynamics show a significant inter-annual variability in the Basque coast. Thus, the period set in 2014, may fluctuate between years. For the stock, the results showed that 11.85 (+/-0.32) million individuals of harvestable biomass for 724 tones (+/- 137). Stock is spread over the entire surveyed area density and biomass decrease rapidly with depth, individuals are mainly located between 0 and 5 m.... |

The French Basque Coast is an actively eroding rocky coast. In the study area it is made of flysch with a circa 40 degrees-dip; it is exposed to an average significant wave height of 1.8 m and peak period of 9.6 s. It is mesotidal (spring tide of ~4m). The current rocky shore platform is carved into the flysch layering. We focus on sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus contribution to rock shore erosion. Indeed, this sea urchin has a burrowing behaviour. An ecological study has been conducted for stock assessment, from shore to 10 m-deep. It indicates that sea urchins are burying their own shelter and are not reusing former ones. Below the depth of 10 m, sea urchins densities are very low and burial behavior is considered insignificant. Estimates of sea urchin... |

Funding lake is one major issue in ecology, in particular at local scale. It is known that sustainable management of a natural population requires a good understanding of its functioning, itself dependent on a good long term monitoring program. Such programs are usually very difficult to implement, especially for resources characterized by high spatio-temporal variation in their distribution, resulting in a trade off between efficiency and costs. Today, thanks to rapidly evolving statistical theory, new survey designs are developed, some with the characteristic of well balancing samples in the study area. This paper aims at demonstrating that theses advanced sampling designs perform better than the usual ones for long term monitoring program of local... |

This paper examines the effect of climate warming on the bio-economic performance of Bay of Biscay mixed fisheries and provides insights into the best management strategy for coping with global warming. To achieve this, a dynamic multi-species, multi-class, multi-fleets model is developed and calibrated using biological and environmental ICES and IPCC data. Fishing and economic data have been collected within the European DCF. The climate represented by the Sea Surface temperature is assumed to affect species recruitment. Three management strategies are then compared in terms of bio-economic outcomes: Status-Quo (SQ), Multi-species Maximum Sustainable Yield (MMSY), Multispecies Maximum Economic Yield (MMEY). Strategies are ranked with respect to two... |
