The REPAMO network (network ofmollusc pathology), created in 1986, ensures the survey of shellfish health status along French coasts according? to European Directives 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EEC. The aims of the network are 1 - to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic pathogens, 2-to study the means to decrease the impact of pathogens already present and to survey their evolution. In 2003, the REPAMO network focused on the survey oflisted diseases (bonamiosis and marteiliosis) in two areas under agreement process (Banc de Granville and zone X) and on the study of abnormal morlalities. Number of reported abnormal morlalities has increased in 2003. This rise can be partly explained by the recent network restructuring, but also by the summer heatwave and...

Viral gametocytic hypertrophy of Crassostrea gigas in France: from occasional records to disease emergence? ArchiMer
Garcia, Celine; Robert, Maeva; Arzul, Isabelle; Chollet, Bruno; Joly, Jean-pierre; Miossec, Laurence; Comtet, Thierry; Berthe, Franck.
Viral gametocytic hypertrophy was reported for the first time in 2001 in Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in France. Since this date, the number of reported cases and the distribution area have increased every year; however, the cases are not associated with macroscopic signs or increased mortality rates. Both male and female gametes were hypertrophied and basophilic inclusions were observed in gamete nuclei, Transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of viral particles in these intranuclear basophilic inclusions. These particles had characteristics similar to those of the Papillomaviridae and Polyomaviridae families: they were small, non-enveloped, icosahedral, and 44 to 56 nm in diameter, The viral particles were found in male, female and...

First results of an epidemiological study on oyster (Crassostrea gigas) mortality events in France during summer 2008 ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Allain, Gwenhael; Arzul, Isabelle; Francois, Cyrille; Garcia, Celine; Cameron, Angus.
Abnormal mortalities occurred in most oyster producing areas in France during the summer of 2008. The mortalities were sudden and severe (up to 100%) and mainly affected 6 to 18 month old juveniles. Only Crassostrea gigas species was affected. The cause of the mortality was unclear but OsHV-1 virus and bacteria belonging to Vibrionaceae family were frequently detected in affected populations. An epidemiological study was commenced in autumn 2008 in order to identify factors associated with, and the cause (or causes) of these mortalities. This paper presents the results of the first (descriptive) part of this investigation. The objectives were to identify the affected population and to describe the pattern of mortalities in time and space. Mortality...

A Large-Scale Epidemiological Study to Identify Bacteria Pathogenic to Pacific Oyster Crassostrea gigas and Correlation Between Virulence and Metalloprotease-like Activity ArchiMer
Saulnier, Denis; De Decker, Sophie; Haffner, Philippe; Cobret, Laetitia; Robert, Maeva; Garcia, Celine.
A 4-year bacteriological survey (2003-2007) of four molluscs cultivated in France and faced with mortality episodes was performed by the French shellfish pathology network. The more abundant bacteria isolated during 92 mortality episodes, occurring mainly in Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, were identified by genotyping methods. It allowed us both to confirm the representativeness of Vibrio splendidus and Vibrio aestuarianus bacterial strains and to identify both a large number of Vibrio harveyi-related strains mainly detected during 2007 oyster mortality outbreaks and to a lesser extent bacterial strains identified as Shewanella colwelliana. Because metalloprotease has been reported to constitute a virulence factor in a few Vibrio strains pathogenic for...

Genetic improvement for disease resistance in oysters: a review ArchiMer
Degremont, Lionel; Garcia, Celine; Allen, Standish K., Jr..
Oyster species suffer from numerous disease outbreaks, often causing high mortality. Because the environment cannot be controlled, genetic improvement for disease resistance to pathogens is an attractive option to reduce their impact on oyster production. We review the literature on selective breeding programs for disease resistance in oyster species, and the impact of triploidy on such resistance. Significant response to selection to improve disease resistance was observed in all studies after two to four generations of selection for Haplosporidium nelsoni and Roseovarius crassostrea in Crassostrea virginica, OsHV-1 in Crassostrea gigas, and Martelia sydneyi in Saccostrea glomerata. Clearly, resistance in these cases was heritable, but most of the studies...

Infection of clams by Perkinsus olseni as an example of the new French Surveillance Programme ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Garcia, Celine; Arzul, Isabelle; Francois, Cyrille; Joly, Jean-pierre; Chollet, Bruno; Robert, Maeva; De Blas, Isabelle.
The French network for the surveillance and monitoring of mollusc health (REPAMO) was officially set up in 1992 to control the shellfish status along the French coasts according to the European directives 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EC. The objectives are 1) the surveillance of notifiable diseases present in France (Bonamiosis and Marteiliosis of flat oysters Ostrea edulis), 2) the surveillance of health status of cultured and wild populations of molluscs, 3) the study of abnormal mortality and 4) the control of exchanges from European and third countries. In this context, a new surveillance programme, called Active Targeted Survey, part of the REPAMO, was applied in 2004 in order to improve the monitoring of the health status of the French mollusc populations...

Can the protozoan parasite Bonamia ostreae infect larvae of flat oysters Ostrea edulis? ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Langlade, Aime; Chollet, Bruno; Robert, Maeva; Ferrand, Sylvie; Omnes, Emmanuelle; Lerond, Sophie; Couraleau, Yann; Joly, Jean-pierre; Francois, Cyrille; Garcia, Celine.
Bonamia ostreae is an intracellular protistan parasite affecting flat oysters Ostrea edulis. It can be detected in juveniles but mortalities mainly affect oysters which are more than 2 years old. The parasite is usually observed inside haemocytes and sometimes free, notably in gill epithelia suggesting a parasite release through this organ. However, the infective form and ways of entry and release remain undetermined. Flat oysters incubate their larvae in their pallial cavity for 8–10 days before releasing them into the water column. Flat oysters in Bay of Quiberon in South Brittany (France) are known to be infected with B. ostreae since 1979 and is the most important area in France for O. edulis spat collection. Flat oysters incubating larvae were sampled...

Etude épidémiologique descriptive des mortalités exceptionnelles d'huîtres creuses enregistrées sur le littoral français en 2008 ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Allain, Gwenhael; Arzul, Isabelle; Francois, Cyrille; Garcia, Celine; Cameron, Angus.

Lupo, Coralie; Fleury, Elodie; Normand, Julien; Osta Amigo, Axel; Robert, Stephane; Canier, Lydie; Francois, Cyrille; Garcia, Celine.

A long term study of bonamiosis in Quiberon bay, France ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Miossec, Laurence; Blanchet, Estelle; Garcia, Celine; Joly, Jean-pierre; Francois, Cyrille; Berthe, Franck.
Bonamiosis was first reported in association with mass mortality of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, in June 1979 in L'Ile Tudy, Brittany. The disease rapidly spread to all of the oyster farming areas in France but also in other European countries. The French flat oyster production, which already suffered from another protozoan disease, marteiliosis, decreased from 5500 mt in 1979 to less than 2000 mt after 1980. In 2001, about 350 French farms sell 1650 mt of flat oysters. This production mainly relies on natural spat collection which specially occurs in Quiberon bay. One third of this spat is transferred from South to North Brittany for further growth. Quiberon bay constitutes an interesting site regarding the surveillance of bonamiosis because of the...
