In many European fisheries and particularly ORs, small-scale vessels are often multipurpose targeting different species using different gears. Given the narrow island shelves, vessels may develop their activity in coastal areas, on the edge of the continental shelf or offshore in deep-water or large pelagic fisheries but it is currently difficult to quantify the distribution of fishing effort between the different fishing gears and between the different areas. it is an important issue to better quantify the fishing effort, its spatial and temporal distribution with the principal objective of alleviating fishing pressure on the coastal fishing resources. The EU legislation requires that all coastal EU countries over 12 meters should set up a Vessel... |

The development on the ecosystem-based approach to fisheries implies to improve integrated analysis of fisheries by considering the biological as well as the socio-economic dimensions of the exploitation and thus, an improvement in the knowledge of fleets structure, evolution and activity. Since 2000, Ifremer has been implemented a Fisheries Information System (FIS), a multidisciplinary monitoring network allowing an integrated and comprehensive view of fishery systems including biological, technical, environmental and economical components. The FIS covers all the French fisheries, including the so-often neglected small-scale fisheries. One of the originalities of the FIS lies in the fleet monitoring procedure: a comprehensive collection of annual... |

Leisure fishing, open to everyone and without a license, is a leisure activity in which many people are interested. Conversely to other harvesting activities such as fresh water fishing and hunting, it has practically not been studied until now (Appéré et Bonnieux, 2002). This study, dedicated to practice of leisure fishing at sea in the Gulf of Morbihan, set itself several objectives: - collect and assemble the available knowledge on regulations and practice of maritime leisure fishing - assess the amount of harvesting of certain recreational types of fishing and the economic impact generated by this activity, - highlight the problems of existing or potential cohabitations among the various users of the space and resources in the Gulf. - develop an... |

This document is the progress report, for the year 2004, of the research programme "Scenarios for Development of Fishing Activity in the Breton Coastal Strip". This programme, co-financed by the Brittany Region within the framework of the XII State/Regional Planning Contract, teams up scientific partners from IFREMER, ENSAR, and UBO (CEDEM). This report consists of four parts: 1. Introduction of the Breton fishing fleet, its characteristics, its activity and its recent history 2. Spatial management of fishing economic activity in the Breton coastal strip 3. Measuring of economic results of Breton professional fishing: Comparison of methods based on accounting data and local surveys 4. Assessment of the economic weight of professional fishing: analysis of... |

In most fisheries worldwide, crew are paid through different shared remuneration systems rather than a fixed wage. In shared remuneration systems, wages can significantly increase when the economic performance of vessels improve, and consequently provide incentives to workers. However, in recent years, mainly due to high overexploitation levels that lead to reduced productivity and consequently lower salaries shared remuneration systems have lost their attractiveness. Different remuneration systems applied in fisheries world-wide are described and analyzed comparatively. Results explain how crew wages and rent distribution outcomes vary between the different remuneration systems depending on the state of exploitation of the resource. |

Shared knowledge on fleets, gears-species and areas of operation, is essential to engage in a platform of exchange on low-impact offshore fishing techniques between fishers and stakeholders from different outermost regions. Information on small scale fisheries in Europe and especially in OR is often heterogeneous and dispersed. That is why it is fundamental to develop a systematic description – status and evolution - of small-scale fisheries in ORs to identify similarities and contrasts between the different ORs, especially in the perspective of fisheries management and more generally best practices. The general objective of the task 2.1.1 was to share knowledge about the status and evolution of small-scale fisheries in ORs according to a common... |

The study of fishery dynamics considers national-level fleet evolution. It has, however, failed to consider the flows behind fleet evolution as well as the impact of the dynamics of owners of invested capital on fleet evolution. This paper establishes a general conceptual framework which identifies different vessel and owner flows behind fleet evolution and some relationships between these flows. This descriptive conceptual framework aims to change the current focus on drivers of fleet evolution to drivers of the flows behind fleet evolution. We identify a direct impact of vessel flows on the fleet size and nature, and an indirect impact of the movements of capital owners on the fleet evolution (size and nature). This conceptual framework is illustrated... |

The aim of this article is to explore, through a hedonic approach, the factors that might explain the price variability for the French-managed fishery of scallop at primary fish markets. In addition to factors classically identified in the current literature like intrinsic product characteristics or markets situation, the characteristics of operators are tested. The relationships of loyalty between sellers and buyers, and market assiduity are notably considered. |

In the context of the Common Fisheries Policy Reform, the implementation of multiannual management plans for fisheries and the annual quota negotiations between EU member states has generated a growing demand from stakeholders and managers for integrated advice that goes beyond the usual biological advice. This has led to the emergence of bio-economic tools and methods for the comparison of the biological, economic and social tradeoffs associated with alternative options for fisheries management. A Decision Support Framework (DSF) has been developed in this context, with the objective to tackle technical and methodological challenges to be able to provide bio-economic advices to support decision at national and European level. It is based on a partnership... |

Several fleets with various fishing strategies operate as a mixed fishery in the Bay of Biscay. Among the main fleets, bottom trawlers target Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) and, together with gillnetters, they also catch hake (Merluccius merluccius). Trawling leads to average-size catches that are below the minimum landing size (MLS); such catches are discarded since they cannot be sold. These discards result in negative impacts on stock renewal, as most of them do not survive. This also results in an economic loss for both bottom trawlers and gillnetters since these discards represent a future loss of rent. This study, based on the 2009 and 2010 selectivity experiments at sea, assesses the short- and long-term bio-economic impacts of four... |
