Hvordan tager landmænd beslutninger om deres sædskifte? Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon.

Farm management, knowledge and multidimensional farming - some reflections from the perspective of farm enterprises as heterogeneous self-organising systems Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon.
The history of modernisation of agriculture is the story of specialisation into a one-dimensional food production, and in recent decades there has been a strong specialisation into one-commodity farms. Changing conditions in terms of technical features and market are commonly seen as the major rationale and driving force of this specialisation. However, the growing amount of knowledge and how this knowledge is produced and circulated may be an even stronger factor of explanation of this development and thereby a key to understand the challenges and barriers of the development of multidimensional farming. Based on empirical investigations and theoretical reflections I will discuss the barriers and potentials for management of multidimensional farming,...

Agriculture and bio based economy a driver of rural transformation and livelihood? Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon.
The structures of rural communities are formed by the past development of agriculture. Industrialized agriculture does not need rural communities anymore, and are some cases even in conflict with the rural communities. The profits made by of agricultural activities have increasingly been mowed from rural to urban areas. Some sees rural development completely decoupled form agriculture; other sees bio economy as a potential revitalization of rural livelihood. This paper addresses the question under which condition agriculture and bio based economy can be a driver for revitalization for rural livelihood. This analysis is drawing on a range of different case studies of agricultural activities that have made a difference to the mainstream development. The main...

The paradox of scientific expertise. A perspectivist approach to knowledge asymmetries Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
Modern societies depend on a growing production of scientific knowledge, which is based on the functional differentiation of science into still more specialised scientific disciplines and subdisciplines. This is the basis for the paradox of scientific expertise: The growth of science leads to a fragmentation of scientific expertise. To resolve this paradox, the present paper investigates three hypotheses: 1) All scientific knowledge is perspectival. 2) The perspectival structure of science leads to specific forms of knowledge asymmetries. 3) Such perspectival knowledge asymmetries must be handled through second order perspectives. We substantiate these hypotheses on the basis of a perspectivist philosophy of science grounded in Peircean semiotics and...

Indicators of biodiversity and conservational wildlife quality on Danish organic farms for use in farm management. A multidisciplinary approach to indicator development and testing Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Halberg, Niels; Reddersen, Jens.
European farmers are encouraged to participate in conserving national biodiversity on farms especially remnant old, undisturbed small biotopes, forests and permanent grassland. It is foreseen that this objective cannot rely on regulation solely, and to succeed, farmers need to understand the goals behind it. A set of indicators have been developed and tested on eight organic farms as part of a ‘green-account’ based dialogue to explore whether the farmers were able and willing to include such indicators in their decision making. ‘Weed cover in cereal fields,’ ’was used as an indicator of floral and faunal biodiversity in the cultivated land, and ‘uncultivated biotope area’ on the farm was used as an unspecific measure of wildlife habitats. In uncultivated...

Values-based food chains – Recoupling man and soil? Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Kjeldsen, Chris; Bjørkhaug, Hilde; Kvam, Gunn-Turid.
Abstract – A market driven sustainable develop-ment of organic agriculture depends on the abilities of the organic food chains to mediate qualities (vales) form place of production to place of consumption. A Pirsig’s based relational analysis reveals the importance of the abilities of all actors of the food chain to relate to and to include these qualities in their strategy. Transparency along the whole chain all way back to place and mode of production seem important.

Combining Luhmann and Actor-Network Theory to see Farm Enterprises as Self-organizing Systems Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
From a rural, sociological point of view no social theories have so far been able to grasp the ontological complexity and special character of a farm enterprise as an entity in a really satisfying way. The contention of this paper is that a combination of Luhmann’s theory of social systems and actor-network theory (ANT) of Latour, Callon, and Law offers a new and radical framework for understanding a farm as a self-organizing, heterogeneous system. Luhmann’s theory offers an approach to understand a farm as a self-organizing system (operating in meaning) that must produce and reproduce itself through demarcation from the surrounding world by selection of meaning. The meaning of the system is expressed through the goals, values, and the logic of the...

Workshop for Organic RDD projekterne m.fl. Organic Eprints

Conventionalization or diversification? Development in the Danish organic production sector following market expansion Organic Eprints
Thorsøe, Martin H.; Noe, Egon.
The organic food market is constantly evolving and organic products are exchanged at multiple markets constituted by particular forms of interaction between producers and consumers. The aim of this paper is to explore how the market influences organic production by looking at the relation between the market and producers engagement towards trust and quality building as well as farm level production strategy. We distinguish between four different market agencements, an arrangement of actors with agency: 1) standardizing market agencement, 2) personalizing market agencement 3) virtualizing market agencement and 4) aesthetifying market agencement. Through qualitative interviews with organic producers, several different strategies are identified. The data...

Samfundsnyttig økologi og borgerne Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon.

How can we know if organics becomes better? A perspectivist view on multicriteria assessment Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
This paper aims to provide insights into the deeper challenges of making and communicating overall assessments of organic food systems. Methods to do overall sustainability assessment are very different, they produce different assessments, and none of them can claim to have the ‘right’ answer. This paper aims to show some of the deeper challenges of making and communicating overall assessments of organic food systems, by investigating the role of scientific and stakeholder perspectives. Some results are that (1) sustainability is a paradoxical perspective, which relies on a multitude of specialised scientific perspectives; (2) assessments are based on built-in, but mostly hidden and sometimes incompatible values; and (3) the key to successful overall...

Observing the observers – uncovering the role of values in research assessments of organic food systems Organic Eprints
Thorsøe, Martin H.; Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
Assessing the overall effects of organic food systems is important, but also a challenge because organic food systems cannot be fully assessed from one single research perspective. The aim of the article is to uncover the role of values in assessments of organic food systems as a basis for discussing the implications of combining multiple perspectives in overall sustainability assessments of the food system. We explore how values are embedded in five research perspectives assessing organic food systems, 1) Food Science, 2) Discourse Analysis, 3) Phenomenology, 4) Neoclassical Welfare Economics and 5) Actor-Network Theory. The article shows that value has various meanings in different scientific perspectives, and that a strategy for including and balancing...

Robuste og højtydende økologiske sædskifter i praksis Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon.

Knowledge Asymmetries Between Research and Practice: A Social Systems Approach to Implementation Barriers in Organic Arable Farming Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Thorsøe, Martin H.; Sørensen, Peter; Melander, Bo; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Fog, Erik.
Research in organic cropping systems has identified basic principles for increasing the robustness and production level of organic arable systems. But even though farmers know these principles, they have not implemented them in practice. This paper aims to improve our understanding of this “knowledge gap” using the theory of knowledge asymmetries, and discusses the implications for research, extension and practice. The paper is based on interviews with 10 organic arable farms focused on how to understand the barriers from the perspective and context of the farming system. The findings show that some barriers are due to lack of knowledge of suggested actions, calling for more ordinary dissemination. But this cannot at all explain all the barriers. The...

Farm enterprises as self-organizing systems: A new framework for studying farm enterprises? Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
The growing attention to sustainable food production and multifunctional agriculture calls for a general perspective of farming that is able to grasp the social, technical, and economical aspects of a farm and the dynamic relationship between the farm enterprises and the surrounding world. The dominating theories within rural sociology reveal their shortcomings when they are applied to grasp the dynamic entity of a farm enterprise and its co-evolution with the structural surroundings, market, technology, knowledge, policy etc. The claim of this paper is that a new concept of a farm enterprise as a self-organizing social system can serve as a fruitful framework for studying the development of multifunctional agriculture in a changing global society. In...
