Population dynamics is commonly described non-spatially using parameters of population demography and vital traits. Population spatial organisation is therefore considered implicit and its importance in the population dynamics ignored. The present study evidences on a variety of stocks correlation between population spatial distribution indices, population abundance, recruitment and mortality. Integrated understanding of initial conditions of early life stages using integrated ecosystem survey data ArchiMer

The population of European anchovy of the Bay of Biscay collapsed at the beginning of the 21st century, causing the closure of its fishery between 2005 and 2010. The spatial pattern in hydro-plankton and fish distributions and their relationship were analysed based on the spring 2000 fisheries acoustic survey. The importance of this survey was that it was a multi-disciplinary platform which collected an extensive set of parameters in the hydro-plankton leading to a potentially finer description of hydro-plankton conditions and fish habitats. Influence of planktonic foodweb structure on a system's capacity to support pelagic production: an inverse analysis approach ArchiMer

Coupled plankton/small pelagic (SP) fish systems were analysed to assess how foodweb structure influences the export of carbon to pelagic fish during the spring bloom in the Bay of Biscay. The investigation of carbon export flows through inverse analysis was supplemented by estimating the carrying capacity for pelagic fish production by applying linear programming. A planktonic foodweb dominated by microbial pathways had the highest trophic efficiency owing to the tight coupling between planktonic trophic levels and predation pressure on mesozooplankton by fish. Interaction between fish and fishing vessels in the Javanese purse seine fishery ArchiMer

In the survey data, a small number of high fish concentration values are often encountered, which denote hotspots of interest. This study presents an application of the geostatistical one-dimensional (1D) transitive method for estimating the precision of acoustic pelagic abundance estimates in Senegal. In applying the method, the major problem encountered was how to take into account the temporal variability in the computation of the estimation variance. In acoustic surveys, echointegration is performed continuously along the ship's sailing track. For a survey design made of parallel transects, each transect can thus be considered as a sampling unit. WGACEGG acoustic and egg-based survey products for monitoring anchovy and sardine populations in the European Atlantic area ecosystem ArchiMer

The Working Group on Acoustic and Egg Surveys (WGACEGG) coordinates the pelagic integrated surveys in ICES Areas 7, 8 and 9. Those surveys provide fisheries-independent, acoustic and/or egg-based estimates of the biomass and demographic structure of sardine and anchovy populations. Survey biomass estimates are the main inputs used to manage those commercially important small pelagic stocks in the European Atlantic area (EAA).
