The impact of crop rotation, nutrient levels and use of catch crops on effect of E. repens on a sandy soil at Jyndevad on yield of winter wheat (2006), spring barley (2007-2008) and faba bean (2006-2008) was studied in an existing organic crop rotation experiment (Olesen et al., 2000; Rasmussen et al., 2006). Some of the objectives were to determine the yield loss at different levels of infestation of the weed, and to determine whether this relationship was influenced by the treatments. For all crops, the treatments had a high impact on the yield. The two treatments that had no manure applied for up to 12 years consistently had the lowest yields. In spring barley, the two treatments with manure and with catch crops consistently had the highest yields. In... |

Field studies on perennial weeds, such as Cirsium arvense, are necessary to study the systemic effects of weed control. In this study we analyse the responses in above-ground C. arvense biomass and crop yield from results obtained in two organic field experiments, both combining stubble cultivation with post-harvest catch crops. A range of catch crops was investigated, varying in both species mixture and method of establishment, yet stubble cultivation was the only treatment found to reduce C. arvense density. The effect was even seen only in one year when a harsh winter acted synergistically with soil tillage. C. arvense exhibited density-dependent growth, in terms of above-ground biomass at harvest, with an estimated max. exponential growth rate of... |

Perennial weeds can be a major constraint to organic crop production in several North European 26 countries. Preventive and cultural control measures may not suffice when infestations with perennials 27 become severe. Direct control actions applied between crops can then be necessary to reduce the 28 problems. We conducted two experiments, one on a sandy loam and one on a sandy soil, respectively, in 29 Denmark, with the aim of studying the efficacy of different implement types and strategies. The 30 treatments were employed against mixed stands of perennials after harvest of spring barley in two 31 consecutive years. Time of treatment, cultivation depth and combinations of implements constituted the 32 strategies. Treatment effects were evaluated in the... |

International Society of Organic Agriculture Research (ISOFAR) afholdt sin første videnskabelige konference d. 21.-23. September 2005 i Adelaide, Australien. |

A series of field experiments were carried out in winter wheat grown under organic conditions in Denmark on fields with different weed pressure. The treatments were sowing strategy (normal sowing time, late sowing and false seedbed), row distance (12 cm and 24 cm row distance) and weed control method (untreated, mechanical weed control (weed harrowing at 12 cm supplemented with row hoeing at 24 cm), and herbicide weed control). Weed biomass was largest at the normal sowing time and was reduced by mechanical or chemical weed control. Row distance alone did not generally influence weed biomass, but mechanical weed control reduced weed biomass at a row distance of 24 cm. Normal sowing time gave rise to about 10% higher yield. The effect of weed control on... |

Fertility building measures are important components in improving the productivity of organic cropping systems without livestock. However, some measures seem to be incompatible with the control of perennial weeds that can have adverse effects such as significant weed competition. The influence of fertility building measures (N2-fixing crops in the crop sequence, cover crops and manuring) and the abundance of perennial weeds were studied in a long-term crop rotation experiment at two locations in Denmark. The aim was to gain insight into the factors that influence the growth of perennial weed species occurring in mixed stands. Data were obtained from three cycles of four-year arable crop rotations comprising various cash crops in rotations with and... |

The aim of this review is to provide an overview of weed control methods available for organic farming systems based on research mainly from Europe and North America, but measures mentioned here are not necessarily allowed in organic farming. Biological control of weeds is not considered in this review. |

In long-term organic crop rotation experiments for cereal production, stubble cultivation to control perennial weeds increased nitrogen leaching compared to catch crops grown after harvest. Stubble cultivation contributed to the control of Elymus repens on a sandy soil, but not to the control of Cirsium arvense on a loamy soil. Manure application had a tendency to decrease E. repens density in one rotation at the sandy soil. Grass-clover green manure decreased C. arvense in the succeeding crops. Despite high infestations of perennial weeds, yields were at the same level with as without stubble cultivation. The results point to an important dilemma in organic farming: should the farmer control perennial weeds in the stubble at the expense of losing nitrogen... |
