Efficacy of extracts from eight economically important forestry species against grapevine downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) and identification of active constituents Organic Eprints
Mulholland, Dulcie A.; Thürig, Barbara; Langat, Moses K.; Tamm, Lucius; Nawrot, Dorota A.; James, Emily E.; Qayyum, Meywish; Shen, Danni; Ennis, Kallie; Jones, Amy; Hokkanen, Heikki; Demidova, Natalie; Izotov, Denis; Schärer, Hans-Jakob.
Downy mildew caused by the oomycete Plasmopara viticola is the most devastating pathogen of grapevine. In this study, extracts of the bark of eight important northern forestry species were screened to find extracts showing activity against this pathogen and to identify the active compounds. Extracts from all eight species showed activity against P. viticola, the most promising, dichloromethane extracts of three Larix species, almost completely protecting grapevine from downy mildew under semi-controlled conditions. Five promising lead compounds were isolated: larixol, larixyl acetate, lariciresinol and lariciresinol acetate from Larix species and 7a,15-dihydroxydehydroabietic acid from Pinus sylvestris. These compounds showed 90%e100% efficacy. Larixol and...

Réduction des produits phytosanitaires en Suisse: la contribution de l'agriculture biologique Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Niggli, Urs; Speiser, Bernhard.

Schärer, Hansjakob; Mahlberg, Nicole; Tamm, Lucius; Koller, Martin.
To grow carrots in organic quality for storage is often difficult due to seed- and soilborne diseases. In a series of experiments, seed treatments were evaluated to improve seed health, field stand establishment and yield of carrots under field conditions on farmer’s fields within their production system. In standard germination tests in the laboratory, positive effects of the treatments were observable. However, in subsequent field experiments, none of the tested seed treatments improved crop establishment or yield. These results indicate that the quality of organic carrot seeds is generally sufficient and improvements with farm-made seed treatments are difficult to obtain. Further improvement in organic production of carrots may be achieved by...

Effects of weed management practices on enteric pathogen transfer into lettuce (lactuca sativa var. capitata) Organic Eprints
Fischer-Arndt, Meike; Neuhoff, Daniel; Tamm, Lucius; Köpke, Ulrich.
We evaluated the effect of using farmyard manure (FYM) in combination with four weed control techniques on the hygienic quality of lettuce. Treatments with six replications included the application of fresh FYM on the soil combined with hand-hoeing (assumed high-risk) and fresh FYM incorporation combined with plastic mulch (assumed low risk). The experiment was repeated twice per season over two years at Bonn University, Germany. The amounts of enteric bacteria in all treatments were within the acceptable limits. Enterococcus was detected in the majority of the samples in concentrations up to 3.7 log10 CFU/g. The Escherichia coli contents of lettuce ranged between n.d. and 103 CFU/g. There was no consistent effect suggesting a specific risk linked to one...

QLIF Workshop 3: Productivity of Organic and Low Input Systems (Crops) Organic Eprints
Köpke, Ulrich; Cooper, Julia; Petersen, Hanne Lindhard; van der Burgt, Geert J. H. M.; Tamm, Lucius.
A large amount of results on optimising organic and low-input production of crops for commodities such as wheat, apples, tomatoes and lettuce have been generated. However, the gap between the productivity of organic and conventional production systems persists as one of the main issues. In this workshop we want to analyse this gap, assess the impact of the QLIF results on yields and costs, and to spark a discussion on further approaches how to increase productivity and yield stability.

Efficacy of Armicarb (potassium bicarbonate) against scab and sooty blotch on apples. Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Amsler, Thomas; Schärer, Hansjakob; Refardt, Matthias.
A novel formulation of potassium bicarbon-ate (Armicarb) was evaluated in 2004 and 2005 as agent against apple scab and sooty blotch in several field trials. Armicarb controlled scab equally well as the reference treatments sulphur and copper. Armi-carb showed also excellent activity against sooty blotch. However, potential side-effects such as lenti-cell spot development need further investigation. At present, potassium bicarbonate is considered by the Swiss registration authorities as non-toxic to humans and in consequence, no residue levels have been specified. Armicarb has very interesting properties as a plant protection agent and its composition and risk profile are expected to fulfil the IFOAM standards for acceptance of novel plant protection...

Culturable fungi of stored "Golden Delicious" apple fruits: A one-season comparison study of organic and integrated production systems in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Granado, José; Thürig, Barbara; Kieffer, Edith; Petrini, Liliane; Fließbach, Andreas; Tamm, Lucius; Weibel, Franco; Wyss, Gabriela S..
The effects of organic and integrated production systems on the culturable fungal microflora of stored apple fruits from five matched pairs of certified organic and integrated ‘Golden Delicious’ farms were studied at five representative production sites in Switzerland. Isolated fungi were identified morphologically. Colonization frequency (percentage of apples colonized), abundance (colony numbers), and diversity (taxon richness) were assessed for each orchard. The standard quality of the stored fruits was comparable for both organic and integrated apples and complied with national food hygiene standards. Yeasts (six taxa) and the yeast-like fungus Aureobasidium pullulans were the dominant epiphytes, filamentous fungi (21 taxa) the dominant endophytes. The...

Sustainability assessment of GM crops in a Swiss agricultural context Organic Eprints
Speiser, Bernhard; Stolze, Matthias; Oehen, Bernadette; Gessler, Cesare; Weibel, Franco P.; Bravin, Esther; Kilchenmann, Adeline; Widmer, Albert; Charles, Raffael; Lang, Andreas; Stamm, Christian; Triloff, Peter; Tamm, Lucius.
The aim of this study was to provide an ex ante assessment of the sustainability of genetically modified (GM) crops under the agricultural conditions prevailing in Switzerland. The study addressed the gaps in our knowledge relating to (1) the agronomic risks/benefits in production systems under Swiss conditions (at field and rotation/orchard level), (2) the economic and socio-economic impacts associated with altered farming systems, and (3) the agro-ecological risks/benefits of GM crops (at field and rotation/orchard level). The study was based on an inventory of GM crops and traits which may be available in the next decade, and on realistic scenarios of novel agricultural practices associated with the use of GM crops in conventional, integrated, and...

Current downy mildew control strategies in Swiss organic vineyards Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Amsler, Thomas; Schaerer, Hansjakob; Lévite, Dominique; Häseli, Andreas.
The currently used downy mildew control strategies in vitis vinifera in Switzerland are based on the use of acidified clay products combined with copper and sulphur. Data from 1997-2003 show that acidified clay products are a valuable alternative to control downy mil-dew of grapevine in conditions of medium rain fall, good spray timing and with a good application tech-nique. The limits of these products show under heavy rain conditions and when there is high disease pressure.

Organic Viticulture in Europe Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Häseli, Andreas; Levite, Dominique; Tamm, Lucius.
Introduction Organic agriculture is a thriving sector in Europe, and in some countries 10 % of the agricultural area is organic. Not so, however, for organic viticulture: the percentage of organic viticulture land compared to all vineyards is lower than for organic agriculture. This is due to several constraints in the sector of production techniques, in marketing, legislation and state support. Material and Methods So far no official data on the current status of organic viticulture in Europe exist. Even though most countries in the Europe collate data on their land under organic management, information on land use patterns is not always available. For this paper several information sources were used including various conference proceedings on the...

Gesunder Boden - gesunde Pflanzen Organic Eprints
Berner, Alfred; Gloor, S.; Fuchs, Jacques G.; Tamm, Lucius; Mäder, Paul.

Impact of soil management practices on soil fertility and disease suppressiveness Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Bruns, Christian; Leifert, Carlo; Fuchs, Jacques G.; Thürig, Barbara; Specht, Nicole; Fliessbach, Andreas.
Soil management practices are targeted to provide adequate crop nutrition and to ensure durable soil fertility and to avoid negative environmental impacts. Soil management also aims to reduce pest and disease pressure on crops. Organic farming is believed to increase soil suppressiveness towards soil-borne diseases as well aerial diseases. In this paper we will discuss the potential of soil manage-ment as a tool to improve disease suppressiveness in practice.
