Report on the 2nd Deep Argo Implementation Workshop. Hobart, May 13-15th 2019 ArchiMer
Zilberman, Nathalie; King, Brian; Purkey, Sarah; Thierry, Virginie; Roemmich, Dean.
Recent technological advancements have led to the development of 4 new Argo models capable of reaching the deep and abyssal oceans: Deep Arvor and the Deep NINJA, with a pressure limit of 4000 dbar and the Deep SOLO and Deep APEX, with a pressure limit of 6000 dbar. Over the past 3 years, these new deep Argo floats have been tested in a number of regional pilot arrays. The international 2nd Deep Argo Workshop has been held at CSIRO in Hobart, Tasmania on May 13-15, 2019 in order to advance the global implementation of a Deep Argo array by: • Presenting new Deep-Argo-based scientific results • Reviewing the objectives of the Deep Argo Program • Describing the Deep Argo float mission in support of Deep Argo’s scientific objectives • Confirming Deep Argo...

On the mechanisms behind decadal heat content changes in the eastern subpolar gyre ArchiMer
Desbruyeres, Damien; Mercier, Herle; Thierry, Virginie.
Historical and modern hydrographic data show substantial decadal variability in the heat content (HC) of the eastern subpolar North Atlantic. Those changes are here investigated in an eddy-permitting simulation (ORCA025-G70) forced by reanalysis products for the period 1965-2004. The observed and simulated decadal signal is characterized by a strong cooling in the 1960’s and 1970’s, a period of minor changes in the 1980’s, and a strong warming in the 1990’s and 2000’s. A heat budget calculation is performed within a box bounded by the Greenland-Scotland sills and the Cape Farewell (Greenland)-Portugal A25-Ovide section. The decadal variability of HC is mainly governed by the integrated effect of anomalous oceanic heat transport across A25-Ovide...

Oxygen Saturation Surrounding Deep Water Formation Events in the Labrador Sea From Argo-O-2 Data ArchiMer
Wolf, Mitchell K.; Hamme, Roberta C.; Gilbert, Denis; Yashayaev, Igor; Thierry, Virginie.
Deep water formation supplies oxygen-rich water to the deep sea, spreading throughout the ocean by means of the global thermohaline circulation. Models suggest that dissolved gases in newly formed deep water do not come to equilibrium with the atmosphere. However, direct measurements during wintertime convection are scarce, and the controls over the extent of these disequilibria are poorly quantified. Here we show that, when convection reached deeper than 800 m, oxygen in the Labrador Sea was consistently undersaturated at -6.1% to -7.6% at the end of convection. Deeper convection resulted in greater undersaturation, while convection ending later in the year resulted in values closer to equilibrium, from which we produce a predictive relationship. We use...

Processing Argo oxygen data at the DAC level ArchiMer
Thierry, Virginie; Bittig, Henry; Gilbert, Denis; Kobayashi, Taiyo; Kanako, Sato; Schmid, Claudia.
This document does NOT address the issue of oxygen data quality control (either real-time or delayed mode). As a preliminary step towards that goal, this document seeks to ensure that all countries deploying floats equipped with oxygen sensors document the data and metadata related to these floats properly. We produced this document in response to action item 14 from the AST-10 meeting in Hangzhou (March 22-23, 2009). Action item 14: Denis Gilbert to work with Taiyo Kobayashi and Virginie Thierry to ensure DACs are processing oxygen data according to recommendations. If the recommendations contained herein are followed, we will end up with a more uniform set of oxygen data within the Argo data system, allowing users to begin analysing not only their own...

Ocean circulation causes the largest freshening event for 120 years in eastern subpolar North Atlantic ArchiMer

The Atlantic Ocean overturning circulation is important to the climate system because it carries heat and carbon northward, and from the surface to the deep ocean. The high salinity of the subpolar North Atlantic is a prerequisite for overturning circulation, and strong freshening could herald a slowdown. We show that the eastern subpolar North Atlantic underwent extreme freshening during 2012 to 2016, with a magnitude never seen before in 120 years of measurements. The cause was unusual winter wind patterns driving major changes in ocean circulation, including slowing of the North Atlantic Current and diversion of Arctic freshwater from the western boundary into the eastern basins. We find that wind-driven routing of Arctic-origin freshwater intimately...

The Argo Program has been implemented and sustained for almost two decades, as a global array of about 4000 profiling floats. Argo provides continuous observations of ocean temperature and salinity versus pressure, from the sea surface to 2000 dbar. The successful installation of the Argo array and its innovative data management system arose opportunistically from the combination of great scientific need and technological innovation. Through the data system, Argo provides fundamental physical observations with broad societally-valuable applications, built on the cost-efficient and robust technologies of autonomous profiling floats. Following recent advances in platform and sensor technologies, even greater opportunity exists now than 20 years ago to (i)...
