Solid-liquid extraction of sorrel calyces with ethanol CIGR Journal
Olawale, Adegboyega Surajudeen.
Ethanol extraction of three particle size distributions of sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa) calyces was investigated.  Extraction rate was found to increase with reduced particle size, increased temperature and solvent mass (solvent-feed ratio).  At 30oC, maximum yield or concentration was achieved with 50:1 solvent-feed ratio but no substantial increment occurred in these parameters beyond 20:1 ratio.  No degradation of the extract’s components occurred between 27oC and 70oC since linear relation between extraction yield and temperature was sustained.  Peleg equation and a variant of it gave the best fit for extraction kinetics.  The smallest calyx particles (

The Water Deficit of Evapotranspiration Covers on Potash Tailing Piles Using CropWat CIGR Journal
Bilibio, Carolina; Hensel, Oliver.
Evapotranspiration covers are key to minimizing water percolation in waste systems. On potash tailings piles, evapotranspiration covers are important because they may decrease the leaching of brines generated from precipitation erosion. Considering this, the water deficit of four different potash tailings piles covering materials were evaluated using the CropWat model. This study was based on a lysimeter experiment carried out in Heringen, Germany. The experiment consisted of 4 different technogenic substrates made of municipal incineration wastes and coal combustion residues covered with a mixture of perennial grasses. By using the FAO CropWat model, the effective precipitation, crop evapotranspiration, actual evapotranspiration and the water deficit were...

A strategy for workplace health promotion on German dairy farms CIGR Journal
Jakob, Martina Carola; Thinius, Maxi.
Studies across the globe have shown that at least 3 out of 5 milkers experience pain in the musculoskeletal system (MSS), mostly in the upper extremities (DOUPHRATE et al., 2014, JAKOB, 2011, KOLSTRUP, 2012, PINZKE, 2003, TUURE & ALASUUTARI, 2009, KAUKE et al., 2010, THINIUS, 2012). The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is well known that dairy farming, and milking in particular is coupled with several risk factors for developing musculoskeletal disorders (KOLSTRUP, 2012). Technical measures seem to be insufficient to avoid physical overload. Therefore a more comprehensive approach seems to be necessary. In this study, four...

Quality evaluation of grapes for mechanical harvest using vis NIR spectroscopy CIGR Journal
Vallone, Mariangela; Alleri, Maria; Bono, Filippa; Catania, Pietro.
Mechanical harvest of grapes is one of the operations that mostly influence the quality of the future wine. The shaking frequency of the harvesting machine is usually adjusted on the basis of the grape berry characteristics in order to limit grape juice production that is a potential cause of uncontrolled fermentations. These evaluations usually require time, personnel and laboratory analyses. The introduction of a vis NIR system to rapidly and reliably evaluate the berry properties in field before mechanical harvest could be a good alternative. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of applying vis NIR spectroscopy as a non-destructive technique on grapes cv.
