Range extension and microhabitat of Lightiella incisa (Cephalocarida) OMA
De Troch, M.; Fiers, F.; Vincx, M..
During an intensive meiofauna sampling campaign in intertidal seagrass beds along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico), 131 specimens of Lightiella incisa (Cephalocarida, Crustacea) were recovered from the sediment. Two-thirds of the specimens were adults, one-third were pre-adults. This collection is the first record of this minute primitive crustacean in the western part of the Caribbean Sea, and extends the known range 3000 km from the type locality of Hastings Bay, Barbados. A detailed sampling protocol and environmental data made it possible to study the microhabitat preferences of this species, and perhaps for cephalocarids in general for the first time. The vertical distribution of L. incisa in...

Recruitment of meroplanktonic larvae in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Belgrano, A.; Vincx, M.; Dewarumez, J.-M.; Richard, A.; Craeymeersch, J.A.; Heip, C.H.R..
The density distribution of meroplanktonic larvae is compared with the density distribution of adults in the benthos, at five coastal stations in the Southern Bight of the North Sea (Abra alba community). Plankton communities were sampled during one tidal cycle, along a buoy traject or at a fixed point; southern and northern locations, 250 m from each central sampling point, have been investigated too. Benthos samples were taken only at the central points of this traject. Meroplankton consisted of polychaete larvae (9 families) and bivalve and echinoderm larvae. The highest density values of these larvae (6,400 ind.10.25 m2) are found on the southern sites of each traject (closest to the coastline). The highest...

Comparative study of the hyperbenthos of three European estuaries OMA
Mees, J.; Fockedey, N.; Hamerlynck, O..
The hyperbenthic fauna of the subtidal channels of the Eems (N. Netherlands), Westerschelde (S.W. Netherlands), and Gironde (S.W. France) estuaries was sampled within a 15-day period in summer 1991. In each estuary, quantitative samples were taken at regularly spaced stations covering the entire salinity gradient from marine conditions at the mouth to nearly freshwater conditions upstream. The diversity of the samples and the distribution of the species along the main estuarine gradients were assessed. Hyperbenthic communities were identified using different multivariate statistical techniques. The species composition and the density and biomass of the dominant species of each community were compared among communities.

Low nutrient availability is not the single factor limiting Artemia cyst productivity in salinas of NE-Brazil OMA
Camara, M.R.; Tackaert, W..
Artemia production in NE-Brazil began in 1977 after a successful inoculation of Artemia franciscana (San Fransisco Bay, California, USA) in solar salt ponds in Macau (RN state) and was followed by a rapid natural dispersion of this crustacean to all saltwork areas in the region. Artemia is basically produced in extensive conditions as an opportunistic by-product collected from salt evaporation ponds. This type of approach has, however, brought about very unpredictable results, as is reflected in a drastic decline of cyst production occurring from 1982 onwards. Low nutrient concentrations and a drop in primary productivity have been suggested as possible causes for this decline. In order to provide a...

The arrest of ships in maritime zones beyond internal waters in Belgian maritime law OMA
Somers, E..
Opportunities may arise to arrest a ship in maritime zones beyond internal waters, e.g. in the territorial sea and the exclusive economic zone (EEZ). This paper examines the possibilities for arrest in those areas on the basis of jurisdiction ratione loci and ratione materiae. Under Belgian law the territorial sea is not part of the State's territory; accordingly, the Belgian Judicial Code does not provide for an attachment judge nor a bailiff to have jurisdiction in this area and a fortiori in the EEZ. The law of April 22, 1999 solved the problem of territorial jurisdiction in this respect. As far as a ship's arrest in the EEZ is concerned, it is not clear whether the United Nations Law of the Sea...

Contributions to the study of the comparative morphology of teeth and other relevant ichthyodorulites in living supraspecific taxa of Chondrichtyan fishes. Part A. Selachii. 2b: Order: Carcharhiniformes - Family: Scyliorhinidae OMA
Herman, J.; Hovestadt, D.C.; Hovestadt-Euler, M..
The tooth morphology of all the genera and subgenera of the Scyliorhinidae, with the unique exception of Pentanchus (not available for examination), is described and illustrated. Several systematic considerations are given. The odontology of the genera Centroscyllium and Aculeola, which are rather aberrant among the Squaliforms, is compared with that of all the Scyliorhinidae taxa presently described.

Preliminary results on the nutritional evaluation of omega-3-HUFA-enriched Artemia nauplii for larvae of the sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax OMA
Van Ballaer, E.; Amat, F.; Hontoria, F.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Freshly hatched San Pablo Bay and Great Salt Lake Artemia nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-poor) and enriched meta-nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-enriched)were compared to reference Artemia nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-rich) as a food source for the larvae of the sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax. Significant differences in survival and biomass production between the treatments could be attributed to the omega-3-HUFA content of the food. A delayed mortality in fish larvae fed the Great Salt Lake Artemia is suspected to be caused by a high level of alpha-BHC in this Artemia source. Growth was not significantly different between the treatments, most probably due to the large variation in growth...

Remote sensing and zonation of seagrasses and algae along the Kenyan coast OMA
Dahdouh-Guebas, F.; Coppejans, E.; Van Speybroeck, D..
Little information has been published on space-borne remote sensing of seagrasses, and no information is available about the distribution of seagrasses and algae in East Africa. Through satellite remote sensing this study investigates the distribution of these plants along a southern section of the Kenyan coast. The visible bands (red, green and blue) and the near infra-red band of a Landsat Thematic Mapper image acquired in 1992 were combined in order to detect seagrasses and algae in 10 sectors along the section of the coast. Ground trusting was done at three locations along the same section. Results indicate that two distinct zones of vegetation can be recognised, and ground trusting reveals their identity is rocky substrate with mostly algae and...

Optimized feeding strategies in the larviculture of the Asian seabass Lates calcarifer OMA
Dhert, P.; Duray, M.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
This paper reports on the progress made at the Tigbauan hatchery of SEAFDAC in the Philippines, with the larviculture of the Asian seabass Lates calcarifer when using w3-HUFA enriched Brachionus and Artemia .In order to optimize the transitions of the different prey types, larval mouth size was analyzed as a function of larval development: San Francisco Bay (SFB) type Artemia nauplii can be ingested from days 8 to 10 onwards, and Great Salt Lake (GSL) nauplii from days 10 to 15 (with some variations depending on growth differences between culture trials). In view of the high correlation between mouth size and total larval length, the feeding of different size classes of...

Correct taxonomic identification of Artemia species OMA
Sorgeloos, P.; Beardmore, J.A..
In order to prevent any further confusion in the scientific literature, we would like to urge contributors to ensure that the citation of Artemia in scientific articles in Aquaculture Research is taxonomically correct. Too frequently, reference is made to Artemia salina. This binomial refers to a European species which may be extinct. Most scientific studies are, however, based on the New World species Artemia franciscana. We estimate that over 90% of the studies in which Artemia is used as experimental test organism or as food source deal with this particular species, very often using material from the Great Salt Lake in Utah, USA. Today at least six bisexual...

Progress in live food production and use in fish and shellfish hatcheries OMA
Sorgeloos, P..
Different species of microalgae, the rotifer, Brachionus spp., and the brine shrimp, Artemia spp., are essential live food in the farming of several species of molluscs (e.g. oyster, clam, scallop), crustaceans (e.g. marine shrimp, freshwater prawn, crabs) and fish (e.g. bass, bream, grouper, turbot, flounder, halibut, ayu). A brief overview is given of the latest developments in their production and use in industrial hatcheries.

International study on Artemia : 48. The effect of temperature on cyst hatching larval survival and biomass production for different geographical strains of brine shrimp Artemia spp. OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effect of temperature on different geographical strains of Artemia has been studied for the following criteria: the hatchability of the cysts, the resistance of the larvae to high temperature (34°C) and the biomass production of larvae cultured under standard conditions. Experimental temperatures ranged from 25° to 37°C for the hatching criteria and from 20° to 32.5°C for the biomass production. Both the hatching percentage and growth performance are affected by temperature. However, the relative and quantitative impact of temperature varies widely among Artemia strains. This is also the case for the temperature resistance of the larvae. The impact of increasing temperatures on cyst hatching as well as the...
