| The problem of the origin of domestic animals and plants, and the means by which they were produced along human history, were of deep interest to Charles Darwin who considered domestic breeding one grand experiment in evolution. In frst place, he elaborated an analogy between artifcial selection, by which breeders obtained desired characters in domestic species, and natural selection, the powerful force driving evolution in nature. | Chilean jack mackerel (Trachurus murphyi) is a highly migratory pelagic species that inhabits the Southern Pacific Ocean, constituting the most important fishery for Chile. This species exhibits an onshore migration during the summer related to coastal food availability, and an offshore migration towards reproductive oceanic areas (beyond Chilean EEZ) in early spring. During the spawning peaks (November) of 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001, jack mackerel eggs were collected from four systematic surveys using 8-10 fishing vessels, deployed in the spawning area (76-92 W) off central Chile. | A new tribe of sigmodontine rodents is formally defined and diagnosed. The tribe contains the extant genera Abrothrix (including Chroeomys), Chelemys, Geoxus, Pearsonomys, and Notiomys, a group of taxa distributed in the central and southern Andes and lowlands both east and west of the cordillera. The new tribe presents a unique combination of characters including nasals and premaxilla usually projected anterior to the incisors, moderately trumpeted; zygomatic plate with upper free border reduced or obsolete; and third upper molar reduced and sub-cylindrical in out-line with an internal ring-like enamel fossette. Molecular phylogenetic analyses indicate that Abrothrix is sister to a clade containing the remaining genera of the new tribe. |

| La colección de moluscos chilenos del Museo Salesiano Maggiorino Borgatello (Punta Arenas, Chile) fue creada alrededor del año 1905 con el objetivo de rescatar el conocimiento local de la malacofauna. Desde esa fecha hasta mediados del siglo XX se habían ingresado numerosos especimenes, los cuales fueron identificados por curadores locales, pero que nunca fueron sometidos a un inventario exhaustivo ni identificación taxonómica. Este trabajo entrega información sobre las especies de moluscos que actualmente están presentes en el museo. | Numerous cold fronts associated with mature extratropical storms sweep the coast of Chile every year. The large expanses of the Southern Pacific Ocean offer an ideal setting for up to 4000-km long cold fronts to develop as their parent cyclones travel from Australia to South America. These fronts sometimes break and spawn secondary cyclones that deepen significantly in one or two days. Examples of such frontal waves will be shown and discussed. | A decade-long study of the Cariaco Basin has demonstrated that the suboxic interface in this system is temporally and spatially variable and that it is the home for a diverse and active microbial community. The thickness and structure of the suboxic zone appears to be primarily controlled by the physics of the basin, with oxygen containing intrusions occurring from both eastern and western sills.
