Index selection of tropical maize genotypes for nitrogen use efficiency Bragantia
Granato,Ítalo Stefanine Correia; Bermudez,Felipe Pereira; Reis,Gabriel Gonçalves dos; Dovale,Julio César; Miranda,Glauco Vieira; Fritsche-Neto,Roberto.
Nitrogen (N) limitation in maize crops is related to the fact that the efficiency of nitrogen fertilization in maize does not exceed 50%, primarily due to volatilization, denitrification and soil leaching. Therefore, the development of new nitrogen use efficient (NUE) cultivars is necessary. The aim of the present study was to develop indices for the accurate selection of NUE maize genotypes for use in conditions of both high and low N availability. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse (20º45'14"S; 42º52'53"W) at the Federal University of Viçosa during October 2010. A total of 39 experimental hybrid combinations and 14 maize lines differing in NUE were evaluated under two N availability conditions. We determined the relative importance of the...

The role of phytochromes in cadmium stress responses in tomato Bragantia
Gaion,Lucas Aparecido; Lorevice,Paulo Guilherme; Monteiro,Carolina Cristina; Gavassi,Marina Alves; D’Amico-Damião,Victor; Gratão,Priscila Lupino; Gasparino,Eduardo Custódio; Carvalho,Rogério Falleiros.
ABSTRACT It is well known that phytochromes mediate a wide range of photomorphogenic processes in plants. In addition, many studies have demonstrated the involvement of phytochromes as part of abiotic stress signaling responses. However, little is known about cadmium (Cd) stress regulation by phytochromes. Thus, in this study, we used the phyA (far red-insensitive; fri), phyB1 (temporary redinsensitive; tri) and phyB2 (phyB2) tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) mutants to investigate the roles of these three phytochromes on Cd stress responses. The plants were grown over a 21-d period in the presence of Cd. We evaluated plant growth, Cd and chlorophyll content and anatomical changes in the leaves. The results indicated that all genotypes were affected by Cd...

Deeba,Farah; Sultana,Tasawar; Javaid,Bushra; Mahmood,Tariq; Naqvi,S. M. S..
ABSTRACT The MYB family represents one of the most abundant classes of transcriptional regulators that perform pivotal role under different developmental processes and abiotic stresses. In present study, a MYB gene from Oryza sativa was selected for functional characterization. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that OsMYB1 cDNA encodes R2-R3 type DNA binding domain consisting of 413 amino acids having size of 44 kDa and pI of 6.24. DNA binding domain containing region was cloned and over-expressed in E. coli. Then, the survival of pGEX-OsMYB1 transformed E. coli cells was compared with control plasmid under different concentrations of NaCl, mannitol, high and low temperature. pGEX-OsMYB1 enhanced the survival of cells at high temperature and salinity....

Phytoene Synthase Gene ( PSY ) from Sweet Potato ( Ipomoea batatas Lam . ) Enhances Tolerance to Abiotic Stress BABT
Shao,Huanhuan; Yong,Bin; Xu,Pan; Zheng,Haiyan; Liao,Ruoxing; Wang,Xiaoyan; Li,Xinyu; Zhang,Li; Shen,Jiabin.
ABSTRACT Phytoene synthase (PSY) is the rate-limiting enzyme for carotenoid biosynthesis. To date, several studies focused on PSY genes in the context of abiotic stress responses. In this study, two phytoene synthase encoding genes, IbPSY1 and IbPSY2, were identified from a published transcriptome and bioinformatic analysis showed that they shared conserved domains with phytoene synthases from other plants. The IbPSY1 gene was cloned and carefully characterized. Digital gene expression profiling (DGE) showed that the highest transcription level of IbPSY1 was in young leaves, and the lowest level was in stems. In vivo expression levels of IbPSY1 under abiotic stress were observed to be highest in stems at day 11. Over-expression of IbPSY1 in Escherichia...

Methodology adjustments for organic acid tolerance studies in oat under hydroponic systems BABT
Kopp,Mauricio Marini; Luz,Viviane Kopp da; Souza,Velci Queiróz de; Coimbra,Jefferson Luis Meirelles; Sousa,Rogério Oliveira de; Carvalho,Fernando Irajá Félix de; Oliveira,Antonio Costa de.
The occurrence of anaerobic conditions in hydromorphic soils favors the development of anaerobic microorganisms that produce phytotoxic substances representing primarily by organic acids. The selection of promising oat (Avena sativa L.) genotypes for use in those situations requires field evaluations that can be cumbersome, making hydroponics a viable alternative. The objective of this work was to adjust a methodology to use in studies of tolerance to organic acids in oat under hydroponic systems. For such goal, the best germination system was determined in order to reduce the seedling initial establishment effects under hydroponics, the ideal concentration for screening genotypes and the best variable for stress evaluation. It was found that the most...

Liu,Li-Ping; Qu,Jin-Wang; Yi,Xiao-Qu; Huang,Huan-Huan.
ABSTRACT Mildew resistance Locus O (MLO), a gene family specific to plants, plays significant roles in the resistance to powdery mildew (PM) and response to a variety of abiotic stresses, plant growth and development. Despite their importance as barley, rice, wheat, few studies are reported in dicots except Arabidopsis; no global analysis has been performed in the burgeoning model fruit plant sweet orange (Citrus sinensis). The recent release of the genome sequences of C. sinensis provides an opportunity to conduct a comprehensive overview the evolution and features of the MLO gene family in sweet orange. In this study, amount to 14 members of the Citrus sinensis MLO gene (CisMLO) family according to their gene structures, conserved motifs, and similitude...

Physiological responses of Eichhornia crassipes [Mart.] Solms to the combined exposure to excess nutrients and Hg Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Caldelas,Cristina; Iglesia-Turiño,Santiago; Araus,Jose L.; Bort,Jordi; Febrero,Anna.
In the present study the physiological response of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes [Mart.] Solms) to the combined exposure of excess nutrients and Hg was examined. Young water hyacinth plants were exposed to a range of HgCl2 and KNO3 concentrations. After eight weeks, submerged plant tissues reached an Hg concentration of 4 mg g-1. The accumulation of P and S was reduced by the addition of HgCl2, and also the P and K concentrations in emerged and submerged parts decreased. In contrast, the addition of HgCl2 increased Ca and Mg concentrations in submerged parts. Furthermore, the concentration ratios of submerged/emerged parts for Ca, Mg and P were also reduced by the addition of HgCl2. The interaction of HgCl2 and KNO3 was synergistic and decreased...

Photosynthetic activity in the rootstock of hybrid peach trees submitted to water restriction and flooding Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Martinazzo,Emanuela G.; Perboni,Anelise T.; Farias,Márcio E.; Bianchi,Valmor J.; Bacarin,Marcos A..
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of flooding and water restriction (drought) on the photosynthetic activity in plants of the hybrid rootstock 'GxN-9' (Prunus dulcis Mill. × Prunus persica L. Bastsch), grown in a greenhouse. Chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange were analyzed in plants of approximately 12 months. The reduction of photosynthetic activity in both the stresses were associated with decreased carboxylation efficiency, but without affecting the internal concentration of carbon dioxide. The JIP-test parameters revealed changes in the energy flux processes demonstrating that in terms of flooding the rootstock GxN-9 the rate of photosynthetic performance significantly decreases, resulting in a considerable decrease in net assimilation...

Identification of aluminum resistant Andean common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Blair,Matthew W.; López-Marín,Hernán D.; Rao,Idupulapati M..
Aluminum (Al) toxicity is the principal abiotic constraint in acid soils of the tropics. Common bean, meanwhile, is for the most part very sensitive to this stress although certain genotypes within the species show some level of resistance, justifying screening of germplasm from both the Andean and Mesoamerican genepools to identify better performing sources. The objective of this study was to evaluate 36 genotypes of common bean under hydroponic conditions to identify root morphological traits that could be associated with Al resistance. A total of five root traits (elongation rate of the primary root, total root length, root biomass, average root diameter and specific root length) were measured using a simple nutrient solution with or without Al (20 µM)...

Expression of Early Light Induced Protein in Grapevine and Pea, under Different Conditions and its Relation with Photoinhibition Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Berti,Maritza; Pinto,Manuel.
Early light induced proteins (ELIP) are a type of proteins which are expressed before than other chloroplast proteins in the presence of light. These proteins have been studied in a large number of annual species such as pea (Pisum sativum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and Arabidopsis sp. In perennials plants the studies about ELIPs are very scarce. The possible photoprotective function of the ELIPs has motivated the interest in investigating the presence of this type of proteins in a perennial plant such as grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) and if their characteristics differ from those found in annual plants. In this paper a comparative study was conducted on the ELIPs expression in grapevine and pea to investigate whether there are differences regarding...

Rezende,Renata Alves Lara Silva; Rodrigues,Filipe Almendagna; Soares,Joyce Dória Rodrigues; Silveira,Helbert Rezende de Oliveira; Pasqual,Moacir; Dias,Gabrielen de Maria Gomes.
ABSTRACT: Salt stress is one of several major abiotic stresses that affect plant growth and development, and there are many evidences that silicon can ameliorate the injuries caused by high salinity. This study presents the results of an assay concerning: (1) the effect of in vitro NaCl-induced salt stress in cape gooseberry plants and (2) the possible mitigating effect of silicon in saline conditions. For that, nodal segments were inoculated in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium under salinity (0.5 and 1.0% NaCl) with different silicic acid concentrations (0, 0.5 and 1.0g L-1). Phytotechnical characteristics, photosynthetic pigments content, and leaf anatomy were evaluated after 30 days. Shoot length, root length, number of leaves and buds, fresh and dry...

GGE Biplot projection in discriminating the efficiency of popcorn lines to use nitrogen Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Santos,Adriano dos; Amaral Júnior,Antônio Teixeira do; Kurosawa,Railan do Nascimento Ferreira; Gerhardt,Ismael Fernando Schegoscheski; Fritsche Neto,Roberto.
ABSTRACT Nitrogen is essential for sustaining life on the planet, and it is the most important nutrient for obtaining high agricultural production. However, their use leads to the release of nitrous oxide with a global warming potential 296 times higher than the CO2 molecule, making it a challenge to reduce their use in agriculture. The objective of this research was to identify efficient popcorn inbred lines and responsive nitrogen use and exhibit a good expansion volume. For this, 29 inbred lines from the Germplasm Collection of Darcy Ribeiro North Fluminense State University (UENF) were evaluated at two contrasting levels of nitrogen availability (low and ideal) at two representative locations in the north and northwest of the state of Rio de Janeiro,...
