China's Ongoing Agricultural Modernization: Challenges Remain After 30 Years of Reform AgEcon
Lohmar, Bryan; Gale, H. Frederick, Jr.; Tuan, Francis C.; Hansen, James M..
Thirty years ago, China began implementing a series of reforms to improve efficiency in agricultural production. These, and subsequent, reforms reshaped China’s position in the world economy. China’s rapid economic development and transformation from a planned to a market-oriented economy, however, has reached a stage where further efficiency gains in agricultural production will likely hinge on the development of modern market-supporting institutions. The development of market-supporting institutions in China will bring about long-term and sustainable benefits to producers and consumers in China and the global agricultural economy. This report provides an overview of current issues in China’s agricultural development, policy responses to these issues, and...

Public-private partnerships for innovation-led growth in agrichains: A useful tool for development in Latin America? AgEcon
Hartwich, Frank; Gonzalez, Carolina; Vieira, Luis-Fernando.
Public-private partnerships have become increasingly important as an arrangement that serves to encourage innovation in agricultural production chains in Latin America. However, some observers have expressed concern that this institutional arrangement may mostly favor the interests of the private sector without producing sufficient social benefits for the public. This paper presents the results of a study of 124 cases of public-private partnerships in agricultural innovation in nine countries in Latin America. The data from the study suggest that the partnership concept is used to generate agricultural innovations in many different ways, involving public research and private entities to varying degrees and focusing on different types of agricultural...

Biochemical and Biological Properties of Soil from Murundus Wetlands Converted into Agricultural Systems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Martins,Luciene Nunes Barcelos; Santiago,Flávia Louzeiro de Aguiar; Montecchia,Marcela Susana; Correa,Olga Susana; Saggin Junior,Orivaldo José; Souza,Edicarlos Damacena de; Paulino,Helder Barbosa; Carneiro,Marco Aurelio Carbone.
ABSTRACT The implementation of conservationist systems that improve soil properties and reduce the impacts of the conversion of native areas is fundamental for feasible agricultural exploitation. This study aimed to evaluate the impact on soil biological properties caused by the conversion of murundus fields into agricultural systems and verify the ability of the no-tillage conservation system to recover these properties over the years. Treatments consisted of three agricultural areas subjected to the same management (no-tillage), in a chronosequence (7, 11, and 14 years of conversion) and a reference area (murundus field). To evaluate soil quality, we analyzed total soil organic carbon, microbial biomass carbon, soil basal respiration, metabolic and...

Economic efficiency of agricultural production in Brazil Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Vicente,José R..
This study measures levels of technical, allocative and economic efficiency in agricultural crop production for Brazil in 1995. A nonparametric frontier model (DEA) under constant returns to scale was used. On average, the results suggest that the sector suffers from moderate technical inefficiency and from strong allocative inefficiency. If full technical efficiency were achieved, the crop production would increase by more than 30% over that obtained in 1995. Land and labor were overutilized, while fertilizers and pesticides were underutilized. Climate, soil conditions and irrigation use affected technical efficiency levels, and education in rural areas helped explain the extent of allocative efficiency. The state of São Paulo State was the only...

กระบวนการจัดการกลุ่มเพื่อใช้ประโยชน์พื้นที่สาธารณะในทางการเกษตร Thai Agricultural
Sunee Chatsiriyingyong; Suchint Simaraks; Anan Polthanee.
Increase community population and increase demand for public land around community water resources for agricultural use need a systematic management process. But in real situation such the process is not common. However, in Nongsang village, Banphue sub-district, Nong Ruea district, Khon Kaen province the process has been implemented and supported for the pesticide-free vegetable group by an external organization. The question was how in this community the group has been successfully and continuously managed. Therefore the objective of this study was to understand the management process that enables the pesticide-free vegetable group to use the Nongsang public pond continuously. Semi-structured was conducted at individual and group levels to gain...

Rainwater harvesting knowledge and practice for agricultural production in a changing climate: A review from Uganda’s perspective CIGR Journal
Kiggundu, Nicholas; Wanyama, Joshua; Mfitumukiz, David; Twinomuhangi, Revocatus; Barasa, Bernard; Katimbo, Abia; Kyazze, Florence.
With a changing climate in Uganda, rainfall distribution patterns have become more irregular over time and space. Excess water during rainy season is causing runoff, soil erosion, nutrient depletion and crop damage which reduce the productive capacity of land, while on the other hand, prolonged droughts during the crop growing period have become common occurrences. Additionally, pastoralists lose livestock during the dry period each year in the Cattle Corridor of Uganda due to water shortage and lack of forage. It thus remains difficult to achieve the agricultural development targets identified in the National Development Plan for Uganda, without addressing regular incidences of adverse impacts of climate change. Currently there are no well explained...

Economic profitability of crop rotation systems in the Caiuá sandstone area Ciência Rural
Volsi,Bruno; Bordin,Ivan; Higashi,Gabriel Eiji; Telles,Tiago Santos.
ABSTRACT: Even in areas of predominance of Caiuá sandstone, with soils of low natural fertility that are highly susceptible to erosion and degradation processes, farmers have adopted systems with little diversification, because they believe that they provide a greater economic return. However, agricultural practices such as crop rotation can bring agronomic benefits in terms of conservation agriculture, in addition to economic gains, circumventing edaphoclimatic difficulties in the region. In this context, the objective of this study is to verify whether no-till crop rotation systems are economically profitable, in a Caiuá sandstone area in the northwest region of the Brazilian state of Paraná. To this end, an experiment was conducted in the municipality...

Nutritional status and physiological parameters of maize cultivated with sewage sludge Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Moreira,Rodrigo Santos; Lense,Guilherme Henrique Expedito; Fávero,Leonardo Ferreira; Oliveira Junior,Benedito Majela de; Mincato,Ronaldo Luiz.
ABSTRACT The use of sewage sludge as a source of nutrients and organic matter for agricultural soils is a well-established practice. However, few reports highlight the effect of the nutrients and potentially toxic elements provided by organic wastes application on the plant physiological parameters, such as photosynthetic activity and stomatal conductivity. We performed a greenhouse experiment with maize exposed to a dystrophic red Latosol amended with mineral fertilizer and different rates of sewage sludge with the following objectives: i) assess the nutrients and metal uptake translocation and distribution in plants and ii) evaluate the relationship between plant physiological parameters and yield indicators under the study conditions. The application of...
