Two different scenarios of biogas production based on energy crops and manure and one scenario where the biogas production is combined with bioethanol production were evaluated with socio-economic analysis. The products from the biogas plants are heat and electricity as well as organic fertilizer. The socio-economic analysis compares the scenarios with a Danish organic farming reference scenario. There are several levels of analysis, where different external aspects are added in each level, e.g. externalities such as savings in CO2-emissions by replacing fossil fuels. The competition between use of land for bioenergy or for food is evaluated. |

One of the aims of organic farming is to “reduce the use of non-renewable resources (e.g. fossil fuels) to a minimum”. So far, however, only very little progress has been made to introduce renewable energy in organic farming. This paper presents energy balances of Danish organic farming compared with energy balances of conventional farming. In general, the conversion to organic farming leads to a lower energy use (approximately 10% per unit of product). But the production of energy in organic farming is very low compared with the extensive utilisation of straw from conventional farming in Denmark (energy content of straw used for energy production was equivalent to 18% of total energy input in Danish agriculture in 1996). Biomass is a key energy carrier... |

Agrifood Research Finland completed a feasibility study concerning on-farm dry fermentation. The study included the documentation of a prototype plant of a dairy farm at Järna about 50 km south of Stockholm. Interesting features of the plant are amongst others the recycling of a second-hand smokestack as reactor material, the inclined first reactor for mixing the solid manure by gravity force, the bottomless drawer technique for discharging, the fixed film technique for rapid methane generation, and a manure compost produced with low nitrogen losses. The recently developed technology is in the process of testing and refinement. The local association of farms, horticulture enterprises, food processing units, food stores, and consumers in Järna aims to... |

A method to calculate efficiency of energy crop production including sun energy, direct and indirect energy for cultivation, processing, and conversion into fuel is demonstrated using rape and derived fuels as an example. Every production and conversion step is a process and calculated separately. The overall efficiency includes energy input and output of all processes. The process efficiency of rape cultivation reaches in Finland up to 1100 %. However, the overall energy efficiency of rape methyl ester (RME) is 1 to 2 ‰ only. The production of biogas from manure of dairy fed by rape meal results in a process energy efficiency of 33 to 41 %, but the overall energy efficiency of RME and biogas together is only 1.2 to 2.5 ‰. In contrast, thermal or... |

The loss of phosphorus in exported products is a concern for all organic producers. The team of CORE Organic Project "Improve-P" assess attitudes to alternative phosphorus fertilisers among organic stakeholders. This paper reports on results collected via a questionnaire at the National Soil Symposium in Solihull, UK November 2014. 58 respondents showed a large interest in recycled P fertilisers, e.g. derived from human urine. One respondent who summed up the workshop in this way: Ultimately for sustainability we have to replace P, lost off farm but balance between purity and recycling is a difficult one. We need to focus on making best use of P reserves in soil, for example deep-rooting green manures, efficient composting, P scavenging plants, that is,... |

Thermophilic composting of faecal matter from urine diverting toilets can effectively reduce the numbers of faecal bacterial indicators and pathogen. Already at 50C, the numbers of pathogens, including the Salmonella phage, and indicator organisms analysed were effectively reduced within a few days of exposure. Although the numbers of enterococci were reduced, they were continuous isolated as purple colonies on Slanetz and Bartleys agar after prolonged exposure at all temperature levels studied. This indicates that certain micro-organisms present in the composted faecal material, Enterococcus spp. or micro-organisms resembling enterococci on the agar medium, can survive and multiply even at 60C. These findings question the use of enterococci as faecal... |
