The U. S. biodiesel industry is rapidly expanding due to energy production concerns, environmental concerns, and recent legislation. The most common type of biodiesel in the United States is derived from soybean oil. Soybeans are a major crop in North Dakota and could easily supply a 5 million gallon per year biodiesel facility. Potential market segments of a biodiesel facility in North Dakota include agriculture, construction, and state fleet sectors based on current diesel use. However, with existing technology and no subsidy, biodiesel operation and investment costs for a North Dakota facility are not competitive with petroleum diesel. Using soybean oil prices of 17 cents to 25 cents per pound, the per gallon cost of producing diesel in... |

Traffic flows in the U.S. have been affected by the substantial increase and, as of January 2009, decrease in biofuel production and use. This paper considers a framework to study the effect on grain transportation flows of the 2005 Energy Act and subsequent legislation, which mandated higher production levels of biofuels, e.g. ethanol and biodiesels. Future research will incorporate changes due to the recent economic slowdown. |

The biodiesel industry in the United States has realized significant growth over the past decade through large increases in annual production and production capacity and a transition from smaller batch plants to larger-scale continuous producers. The larger, continuous-flow plants provide operating cost advantages over the smaller batch plants through their ability to capture co-products and reuse certain components in the production process. This paper uses a simple capital budgeting model developed by the authors along with production data supplied by industry sources to estimate production costs, return-on-investment levels, and break-even conditions for two common plant sizes (30 and 60 million gallon annual capacities) over a range of biodiesel and... |

Over the last few years, the production of renewable fuels has increased dramatically. Rising oil prices, limited supplies of fossil fuel, and increased concerns about global warming have created a growing demand for renewable energy sources. Both the ethanol and biodiesel industries have experienced tremendous growth in the past few years. The production of these fuels is highly dependent on the availability of agricultural feedstocks. This research examined the covariability between crude oil prices and corn, sorghum, sugar, soybeans, soybean oil, and palm oil prices during the 2003-2007 time period. Johansen cointegration tests revealed no cointegrating relationships during the 2003-2005 time frame. However, corn prices and soybean prices were... |

This work evaluated the effective and potential importance of biodiesel for soybean production in Brazil and its regions in 2008, as well as if the prices of biodiesel had been adjusted according to the interests of producers and consumers. Four situations were considered: the first one refers to the application of Law 11.097/05, which resulted in a production of 1.164,33 million liters of biodiesel (912,83million liters of soybean biodiesel), which corresponds to 2,6% of the national diesel consumption in 2008. Alternatively, an estimate was made of what would happen if the percentage of the mixture had been 4%, 5% or 8,3%. In 2008, it is estimated that 8,5 % of the soybean produced in Brazil was directed for biodiesel production, and this percentage... |

This study analyses the National Programme for Production and Use of Biodiesel launched by the Brazil Federal Government in 2005 as a public policy to generate sustainable employment and income within the context of development of new alternative sources of energy. It also verifies the impact of PNPB on occupation and income rate of farmers participating in the projects of production of biodiesel through field research carried out on 93 family farms participating in projects already implemented in the State of Goiás. The choice of producers was made at random from a list of all producers who had already gone through a complete cycle of production and stretched across 33 municipalities in the second half of 2007. The survey data was obtained through a... |

This work aimed to analyze the economical impacts generated by the biodiesel production through the input-output model analysis. Hence, it was defined the basic inputs used for the biodiesel production, especially the soybean oil and the castor oil plant both having a high potential to increase the production in Brazil and the ethanol (alcohol from sugar cane). Henceforth, an evaluation of the biodiesel sector in the input-output matrix of the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) to the year 1999 was started, considering the technical coefficients of the basic inputs and the biodiesel production. It is expected, after the results of the organization of the Agroindustrial System (SAG), a high impact in the production and employment levels... |
