Speciation in Cyprinidae of the Iberic Peninsula. ArchiMer

Coming from Oriental Asia and Siberia, the Cyprinidae reached the Iberic Peninsula probably at the end of the Oligocene. Their populations bore speciation processes which led to the formation of a fauna rich in endemic species and subspecies. Populations of two of the genera Barbus and Pseudophoxinus reached Northwestern African forming there several endemic species. Concerning the speciation forms, it is probable that the allopatric form, whether by foundation effect or by subdivision, played an important part. Pyrenees and Mediterranean Sea settled probably efficient barriers for the Iberic Cyprinidae isolation. Distribution of Pseudoryzomys Simplex (Rodentia: Cricetidae) in Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.

We report new records for the poorly known sigmodontine rodent Pseudoryzomys simplex in Argentina, totalizing 28 recording localities (Formosa, Chaco, and Santa Fe provinces). The southern limit of the species is about 30ºS and its distribution, in Argentina, is mainly restricted to the Eastern Chaco biome.

Nicaragua's Cosigüina Peninsula, located at the northwestern tip of the country, is one of the most poorly studied biotic regions in Central America. The peninsula has been occupied for millennia because the climate of the region supported human habitation and because of its strategic position along the rich Pacific coast. The combination of long-term occupancy by humans and the cataclysmic eruptions of Volcán Cosigüina have produced a heavily impacted landscape. During the 1960s, the University of Kansas conducted multiyear field surveys of the terrestrial mammals on the peninsula and the adjacent mainland to quantify species diversity, relationships, abundances, habitat use, and reproduction. Fossil evidence and probable extinction of the greater fishing bat Noctilio leporinus (Chiroptera: Noctilionidae) on Isla de Mona, Puerto Rico Mastozool. neotrop.

The greater fishing bat Noctilio leporinus has long been erroneously attributed to Isla de Mona, Puerto Rico, based on specimens from Monos Island, Trinidad. There are no historical specimens from the island but a radius from a late Holocene cave deposit now establishes that the species was once present. Its apparent extinction may be have been caused by human intervention, a factor that should be taken into account in the biogeography of West Indian bats.

Species of small mammals from southwestern Buenos Aires province range within a wide variety of habitats, herbaceous (Pampean District), shrubs (Monte District), steppes, and xerophytic woodlands (Espinal District). Their natural history is still poorly known. In this paper we make a synthesis of the taxonomy and distribution of the marsupials (Marmosinae) and rodents (Sigmodontinae) of southwestern Buenos Aires province. Distributional records and taxonomical information were obtained from field survey, analyses of raptor pellets, revision of specimens housed in collections in Argentina, and literature. New records of Monodelphis kunsi (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) from Brazil Mastozool. neotrop.

We review the known distribution of Monodelphis kunsi from South America and reported nine new localities of occurrence in Mato Grosso do Sul state, southwestern Brazil. These new records fill the gap on geographic distribution of M. kunsi in southwestern Brazil. The species presents wide geographic range including distinct habitats. The lack of studies in southwestern Brazil and the non-utilization of pitfall traps can be the main factors responsible for the lack of knowledge on distribution of small mammal species to this region.

The paper summarizes the current understanding of the evolution and diversification of birds. New insights into this field have mainly come from two fundamentally different, but complementary sources of information: the many newly discovered Mesozoic bird fossils and the wealth of genetic analyses of living birds at various taxonomic levels. Leptoiulus (Lamelloiulus) ivanjicae, a new endemic Millipede from the Balkan Peninsula (Diplopoda, Julidae) Naturalis

A new species of the diplopod genus Leptoiulus Verhoeff, 1894: Leptoiulus (Lamelloiulus) ivanjicae nov. spec. is described from western Serbia, Yugoslavia. The diagnostic characters of this millipede are compared to those of its phylogenetically close congeners. Notes are given on the habitat and geographic distribution of this endemic species.

A new cryptic species of lizard (Sauria: Teiidae: Gymnophthalmus) from Venezuela Naturalis

Gymnophthalmus cryptus spec. nov. is described and illustrated on the basis of males and females collected in the Territorio Federal Amazonas, southern Venezuela. Some details on ecology and distribution are also presented. The females of G. cryptus are very similar to the unisexual Gymnophthalmus underwoodi, which also occurs in the Guianan Region. In fact, G. cryptus is one of the best candidates for future genetic research to determine whether it is the missing ancestor of G. underwoodi, a parthenogenetic species of hybrid origin (G. speciosus x G. spec.?). Two other series of previously unreported species of Gymnophthalmus from Venezuela are also discussed.

The benthic hydroid fauna of the Chafarinas Islands (Alborán Sea, western Mediterranean) Naturalis

The benthic hydroid fauna of the Chafarinas Islands (Western Mediterranean), collected during a survey in the summer of 1991, has been studied. A total of 86 species, 20 athecate hydroids and 66 thecate hydroids, has been recorded. For every species, the synonymy, a survey of the material studied and data concerning ecology and distribution are included. The majority of the species has been figured and the most important have been (re)described.

A Miocene perspective on the evolution of the Amazonian biota Naturalis

Between c. 23 and 8 Ma, western Amazonia was occupied by the vast Pebas long-lived lake/wetland system. The Pebas system had a variety of influences over the evolution of Miocene and modern Amazonian biota; it formed a barrier for the exchange of terrestrial biota, a pathway for the transition of marine biota into freshwater Amazonian environments, and formed the stage of remarkable radiations of endemic molluscs and ostracods. The lithological variation of the Pebas Formation has furthermore enhanced edaphic heterogeneity in western Amazonia, sustaining present-day high terrestrial diversity in the region.

Discovery of a living fossil: a new xylastodorine species from New Caledonia (Heteroptera: Thaumastocoridae) and first record of the subfamily from the eastern Hemisphere Naturalis

A new species belonging to the genus Proxylastodoris Heiss & Popov, 2002, P. kuscheli spec. nov., of the subfamily Xylastodorinae Barber, 1920 (Heteroptera: Thaumastocoridae) is described from New Caledonia. It is the first recent record outside the western Hemisphere of the Xyalstodorinae and is the largest known member of the family Thaumastocoridae. The new species was collected on inflorescences of the native New Caledonian palm species Burretiokentia vieillardii (Brongn. & Gris) Pichi-Serm. Contribution to an inventory of the freshwater planarians of Australia and New Zealand (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Dugesiidae), with distribution maps of the species examined Naturalis

An account is given of 13 species of freshwater planarians from the family Dugesiidae, based on samples from new localities in New Zealand and Australia; these include four newly described and one problematic species. In the case of three species, the material described represents the second series of specimens available since the material used in the original descriptions of these species, as a result of which our understanding of the morphology of the animals can be expanded. Phylogeny and biogeography of midwife toads (Alytes, Discoglossidae): a rebuttal Naturalis

Three competing phylogenetic hypotheses for the genus Alytes (midwife toads) are evaluated. Based on quantitative coding of protein characters the most parsimonious solution shows a sister taxon relationship for Alytes dickhilleni and A. muletensis. The alternatives in which A. obstetricans has its sister group in either A. dickhilleni or A. muletensis lack support. Using calibrations derived from protein evolutionary rates, the vicariant events giving rise to A. obstetricans and the lineage leading to the A. muletensis and A. dickhilleni clade and the subsequent splitting between A. muletensis and A. dickhilleni cannot be placed much earlier than the Miocene-Pliocene boundary. The anatomy and phylogeny of the African land snail Limicena Connolly, 1925 (Pulmonata: Cerastidae) Naturalis

An investigation of the anatomy of Limicena confirms its position as a monotypic genus in the Cerastidae. Phylogenetic analysis places Limicena as the most plesiomorphic member of a clade characterised by a pseudosigmurethrous excretory system, the more advanced members of which are Rhachistia, Amimopina and Edouardia. Its position at the base of such a widely dispersed, advanced clade with apparently xerophilic adaptations lends support to a dispersalist hypothesis for the extra-Afrotropical distribution of the Cerastidae.

The biogeography and extinction of megapodes in Oceania Naturalis

The arrival of prehistoric peoples in Oceania over the past several millennia resulted in the extinction of many species and populations of megapodes. Before these anthropogenic losses, species of megapodes ranged across Melanesia, Western Polynesia, and much of Micronesia. Island groups that lack megapodes today but were inhabited by them in the past include New Caledonia, Fiji, the Ha`apai Group and `Eua (Tonga), Samoa, Niue, and Pohnpei. The extinct megapodes varied in size from a tiny, quail-like species of Megapodius in Tonga to the large, flightless Sylviornis of New Caledonia. The butterflies of Sulawesi: annotated checklist for a critical island fauna Naturalis

All species and subspecies of butterflies recorded from Sulawesi and neighbouring islands (the Sulawesi Region) are listed. Notes are added on their general distribution and hostplants. References are given to key works dealing with particular genera or higher taxa, and to descriptions and illustrations of early stages. As a first step to help with identification, coloured pictures are given of exemplar adults of almost all genera. General information is given on geological and ecological features of the area. Combined with the distributional information in the list and the little phylogenetic information available, endemicity, links with surrounding areas and the evolution of the butterfly fauna are discussed.

A taxonomic survey of seaweeds from Eritrea Naturalis

A survey of seaweeds was made in Eritrea in December 1995 and January 1996 on some islands of the Dahlak Archipelago and the surroundings of the port town of Massawa. During our study 101 specific and infraspecific taxa were identified, including 26 Chlorophyta, 20 Phaeophyta and 55 Rhodophyta. The survey resulted in 36 new records for Eritrea (11 Chlorophyta, 7 Phaeophyta and 18 Rhodophyta). Of these Eritrean records, 26 are new for the Red Sea (5 Chlorophyta, 4 Phaeophyta and 17 Rhodophyta). Phylogenetic biogeography of Euphrasia section Malesianae (Orobanchaceae) in Taiwan and Malesia Naturalis

Species of Euphrasia are distributed in both hemispheres with a series of connecting localities on the mountain peaks of Taiwan and the Malesian region including Luzon, Borneo, Sulawesi, Seram and New Guinea. Two hypotheses are proposed to explain this distribution pattern. The Northern Hemisphere might have been the centre of origin or the Southern Hemisphere. This study aims to reconstruct the core phylogeny of Euphrasia in the connecting areas and tries to identify the migratory direction of Euphrasia in Taiwan and Malesia.
