Contrasts in Areas of Rubber Tree Clones in Regard to Soil and Biomass Carbon Stocks Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Diniz,Anderson Ribeiro; Pereira,Marcos Gervasio; Balieiro,Fabiano de Carvalho; Silva,Eduardo Vinicius da; Santos,Felipe Martini; Lisboa,Francy Junio Gonçalves; Oliveira,Aldo Bezerra de; Cruz,Renato Barbosa da.
ABSTRACT Rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) crop may accumulate significant amounts of carbon either in biomass or in the soil. However, a comprehensive understanding of the potential of the C stock among different rubber tree clones is still distant, since clones are typically developed to exhibit other traits, such as better yield and disease tolerance. Thus, the aim of this study was to address differences among different areas planted to rubber clones. We hypothesized that different rubber tree clones, developed to adapt to different environmental and biological constrains, diverge in terms of soil and plant biomass C stocks. Clones were compared in respect to soil C stocks at four soil depths and the total depth (0.00-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.20,...

Soil carbon and nitrogen stocks in traditional agricultural and agroforestry systems in the semiarid region of Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Sacramento,José Augusto Amorim Silva do; Araújo,Ana Caroline de Moraes; Escobar,Maria Eugenia Ortiz; Xavier,Francisco Alisson da Silva; Cavalcante,Ana Clara Rodrigues; Oliveira,Teógenes Senna de.
In the semiarid region of Brazil, inadequate management of cropping systems and low plant biomass production can contribute to reduce soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stocks; therefore, management systems that preserve C and N must be adopted. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in soil C and N stocks that were promoted by agroforestry (agrosilvopastoral and silvopastoral) and traditional agricultural systems (slash-and-burn clearing and cultivation for two and three years) and to compare these systems with the natural Caatinga vegetation after 13 years of cultivation. The experiment was carried out on a typical Ortic Chromic Luvisol in the municipality of Sobral, Ceará, Brazil. Soil samples were collected (layers 0-6, 6-12, 12-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm)...

BIOCHAR: PYROGENIC CARBON FOR AGRICULTURAL USE - A CRITICAL REVIEW Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Novotny,Etelvino Henrique; Maia,Claudia Maria Branco de Freitas; Carvalho,Márcia Thaís de Melo; Madari,Beáta Emöke.
Biochar (carbonized biomass for agricultural use) has been used worldwide as soil amendment and is a technology of particular interest for Brazil, since its "inspiration" is from the historical Terra Preta de Índios(Amazon Dark Earth), and also because Brazil is the world's largest charcoal producer, generating enormous residue quantities in form of fine charcoal and due to the availability of different residual biomasses, mainly from agroindustry (e.g., sugar-cane bagasse; wood and paper-mill wastes; residues from biofuel industries; sewage sludge etc), that can be used for biochar production, making Brazil a key actor in the international scenario in terms of biochar research and utilization). In the last decade, numerous studies on biochar have been...

Environmental quality improvement of agricultural lands through silvopasture in southeastern United States Scientia Agricola
Nair,Vimala D.; Haile,Solomon G.; Michel,Gérard-Alain; Nair,P.K. Ramachandran.
We hypothesized that, because of the ability of trees to sequester carbon (C) in the deep soil profile and remove excess nutrients from soils, the silvopastoral agroforestry system could enhance the environmental quality of the agricultural lands. To test this hypothesis, two sets of experiments were conducted in two soil orders in Florida, Spodosols and Ultisols, with two major objectives: i) determining the soil C accumulation and tracing the plant sources of C in soil fractions, and ii) quantifying water soluble phosphorus (WSP) and estimating the Soil P Storage Capacity (SPSC). Total C in both soil orders was greater under silvopasture than in treeless pastures, particularly at lower depths. Stable-isotope signature analysis suggested that C3 plants...

Measurements of CO2 exchange over a woodland savanna (Cerrado Sensu stricto) in southeast Brasil Biota Neotropica
Rocha,Humberto R. da; Freitas,Helber C.; Rosolem,Rafael; Juárez,Robinson I.N.; Tannus,Rafael N.; Ligo,Marcos A.; Cabral,Osvaldo M. R.; Dias,Maria A.F. Silva.
The technique of eddy correlation was used to measure the net ecosystem exchange over a woodland savanna (Cerrado Sensu stricto) site (Gleba Pé de Gigante) in southeast Brazil. The data set included measurements of climatological variables and soil respiration using static soil chambers. Data were collected during the period from 10 October 2000 to 30 March 2002. Measured soil respiration showed average values of 4.8 molCO2 m-2s-1 year round. Its seasonal differences varied from 2 to 8 molCO2 m-2s-1 (Q10 = 4.9) during the dry (April to August) and wet season, respectively, and was concurrent with soil temperature and moisture variability. The net ecosystem CO2 flux (NEE) variability is controlled by solar radiation, temperature and air humidity on diel...
