Soft bottom megabenthic communities have been poorly studied in the Caribbean Sea. In this study we describe the structure and species composition of a Crustacea-Mollusca megafaunal community based on beam trawl samples taken between 13 and 60 m depth at the southwestern region of Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean. Classification and ordination analyses using abundance data of crustaceans and molluscs produced two main groups (A and C), which seem to be controlled by depth and sediment characteristics. Group A consisted of species collected at the deeper stations and high content of silts (between 30 and 60 m depth) and exhibited the highest density and biomass mean values. The decapod Chasmocarcinus cilindricus was found as the characteristic species for... |

The bivalve Corbicula fluminea Müller is recorded for the first time in Colombia, in the National Park Isla de Salamanca. This protected area includes freshwater channels and mixohaline lagoons influenced by waters of both the Magdalena River and the Caribbean Sea. This exotic bivalve occurs locally in freshwater channels close to the Magdalena River as well as in the latter, whereas another corbiculid native species, Polymesoda solida, is commonly found in the mixohaline lagoons. Densities of C. fluminea ranged from 10 to 100 ind/m2 along with low numbers of P. solida. Lengths ranged form 10 to 43 mm in a predominant muddy substrate. Local fishermen have stated that C. fluminea was established approximately in 1992; this clam is being artisanally... |

Octocorals are being included in a great variety of worldwide studies with the aim of analyzing taxonomy, ecology, biogeography, genetics and geochemistry, among other aspects. The study described here includes samples collected during the 'Macrofauna' explorations carried out by the Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras-INVEMAR between 1998 and 2002 from shallow (20 m) to deep (500 m) waters. A total of 280 museum containers were examined. Samples were collected at 32 stations distributed along the continental shelf and upper slope of Colombian Caribbean. A total of 44 species have been recognized, 21 of them identified to species level and 23 to genus level; the species are included in 22 genera and nine families (Plexauridae, Gorgoniidae,... |

ABSTRACT Sponges (Porifera) are important constituents of littoral habitats in the Caribbean Sea. The knowledge of their biodiversity is fundamental to carry out ecological, managerial and utilitarian research. Their taxonomy is complex, but in the Caribbean in general, and in Colombia in particular, there are important advances. With this work, some sponge species of the genera Petrosia and Xestospongia are recorded and described for the first time from the Colombian Caribbean. Petrosia (Strongylophora) davilai, Xestospongia arenosa, Xestospongia deweerdtae and Xestospongia purpurea are described and illustrated. The number of records of Petrosia and Xestospongia for the Colombian Caribbean are now three and four species, respectively. In all species, the... |
