Patterns of diversity and abundance of fungus-growing ants (Formicidae: Attini) in areas of the Brazilian Cerrado Zoologia
Vasconcelos,Heraldo L.; Araújo,Bruna B.; Mayhé-Nunes,Antonio J..
Fungus-growing ants (tribe Attini) are characteristic elements of the New World fauna. However, there is little information on the patterns of diversity, abundance, and distribution of attine species in their native ecosystems, especially for the so-called "lower" genera of the tribe. A survey of attine ant nests (excluding Atta Fabricus, 1804 and Acromyrmex Mayr, 1865) was conducted in a variety of savanna and forest habitats of the Cerrado biome near Uberlândia, Brazil. In total, 314 nests from 21 species of nine genera were found. Trachymyrmex Forel, 1893 was the most diverse genus with 10 species. Eighteen species were found in the savannas, including Mycetagroicus cerradensis Brandão & Mayhé-Nunes, 2001, a species from a recently-described...

Fifty-five specimens of bluefish, Pomatomus saltator (Linnaeus, 1766), collected at Cabo Frio (23ºS, 42ºW), State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between March 1995 and November 1995, were necropsied to study their infracommunities of metazoan parasites. Sixteen species of metazoan parasites were collected. All fish were parasitized by one or more metazoan. The digeneans were the majority of the parasite specimens collected, with 44.2%, followed by the helminth larval stages (cestodes, acanthocephalans, and nematodes) with 40.6%. The Simpson index for all parasite species was 0.097, indicating lack of dominance by any species in the parasite community. Microcotyle pomatomi Goto, 1899 showed the higher frequency of dominance and mean relative dominance. The...

A comunidade de macroartrópodos edáficos em uma plantação de Coffea robusta Linden (Rubiaceae) e em uma floresta primária em Linhares, Espírito Santo, Brasil Zoologia
Pellens,Roseli; Garay,Irene.
The composition and structure of the edaphic macroarthropod community of these two sites were comparatively studied. The results obtained show that the total densities in the plantation of C. robusta can be higher than in the primary forest. Even though, contrarily to the observed in the forest, this community is characterized by the dominance of some non social groups and by the concentration of most of its individuals in the litter layers. As a consequence, the entire community is more susceptible to seasonal variations in density. Thus, these results emphasize the importance of the leaf litter in providing habitat, food as well as more stable microclimatic conditions for the macroarthropods community. For this reason it is importam to avoid any kind of...

Effects of the introduction of an omnivorous fish on the biodiversity and functioning of an upland Amazonian lake Acta Amazonica
NOBRE,Regina L. G.; CALIMAN,Adriano; GUARIENTO,Rafael D.; BOZELLI,Reinaldo L.; CARNEIRO,Luciana S..
ABSTRACT The introduction of nonnative species is one of the main threats to freshwater ecosystems. Although omnivory and intraguild predation are common in those systems, little is known about the effects of introduced omnivorous fish on pelagic and littoral communities. This study tested predictions of food-web theory regarding the effects of omnivorous fish introduction on previously fishless lakes in the Amazonian uplands of Serra dos Carajás, Pará, Brazil. The trophic structure of two similar lakes, one with and the other without the introduced omnivorous fish Astyanax bimaculatus, was compared using a data series of biotic variables collected from both lakes twice a year from 2010 to 2013. Zooplankton was more abundant in the lake with fish, and the...

Structure and composition of the ground-herb community in a terra-firme Central Amazonian forest Acta Amazonica
Costa,Flávia Regina Capellotto.
The herb community of tropical forests is very little known, with few studies addressing its structure quantitatively. Even with this scarce body of information, it is clear that the ground herbs are a rich group, comprising 14 to 40% of the species found in total species counts in tropical forests. The present study had the objective of increasing the knowledge about the structure and composition of the ground-herb community and to compare the sites for which there are similar studies. The study was conducted in a tropical non-inundated and evergreen forest 90 km north of Manaus, AM. Ground herbs were surveyed in 22 transects of 40 m², distributed in five plots of 4 ha. The inventoried community was composed of 35 species, distributed in 24 genera and 18...

Machado,Letícia S.; Gonzatti,Felipe; Windisch,Paulo G..
ABSTRACT Community structure and spatial distribution of epiphytic ferns in swamp forest remnants along the coastal plain of the state of Rio Grande do Sul were analyzed. A total of 440 trees were sampled in fifty-seven 10 x 10 m plots. Each phorophyte was divided into five ecological zones (strata), where all species of epiphytic ferns were recorded. A total of 34 species representing 18 genera in six families were recorded. Polypodiaceae was the most represented family with 17 species, and Microgramma vacciniifolia had the highest epiphytic importance value. Characteristic holoepiphyte was the predominant ecological category, representing 70 % of the species. Ordination analysis showed a gradual change in floristic composition between ecological zones...

Local environmental controls of Atlantic Forest tree community assembly on a coastal continental island in southeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Nettesheim,Felipe Cito; Garbin,Mário Luís; Pereira,Marcos Gervasio; Araujo,Dorothy Sue Dunn de.
ABSTRACT Tropical forests with high species diversity are commonly found in rugged montane areas. We investigated causes of local tropical forest tree community assembly on a continental island with heterogeneous terrain. We recorded tree community (absolute species abundance), topography, soil, litter and location in 40 sampling units on two opposite sides of the island with similar heterogeneous terrain. We used transformation based Redundancy Analyses and variation partitioning to determine the contribution of environment (topography, soil and litter), spatial structure (geographic location and Moran Eigenvector Maps) and the shared effects of these to explain community assembly. The environment made a significant contribution to explain tree community...

Structure of the periphytic algae associated with a floating macrophyte in an open lake on the upper Paraná river floodplain, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i4.18663 Biological Sciences
Biolo, Stefania; Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP); Rodrigues, Liliana; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
We aimed to access the knowledge of the structure of the periphytic algae community on a floating substrate, the macrophyte Ricciocarpus natans (L.) Corda, during two hydrological periods in a connected environment at the Paraná river floodplain. Attached algal was removed from the substrate with the aid of a soft-bristled brush and distilled water jets and was fixed immediately for qualitative and quantitative analysis. The total richness of the periphytic algae was 188 taxa. February showed the highest species richness (154 taxa), while total species density exhibited an inverse pattern, with the highest values occurring in June (273.4 103ind. cm-2). Bacillariophyceae comprised the largest fraction of density, which was reflected by the abundance of...

Relationship between the structure of zooplankton community and the water level in a floodplain lake from the Pantanal, Mato Grosso State, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i3.6975 Biological Sciences
Fantin-Cruz, Ibraim; UFRGS; Loverde-Oliveira, Simoni Maria; UFMT; Bonecker, Cláudia Costa; UEM; Girad, Pierre; UFMT; Motta-Marques, David da; UFRGS.
The hydrological condition of floodplain systems alters the structure and dynamic of aquatic communities. We suggest that the structure of zooplankton community changes according to the flood phases and connectivity. This study was carried out in a floodplain lake located in the Northern Pantanal (Brazil). Zooplankton density varied considerably over time, although the sampling stations presented similar densities. The densities ranged from 2,000 ind. M-3 in the high water phase to more than 2,300,000 ind. M-3 during the low water phase when the lake remains isolated. The densities of the groups also presented a temporal variation. Rotifers described the community mainly in the low water phase and microcrustaceans during the high water phase. Variations in...

Longitudinal variation of attributes from flagellate protozoan community in tropical streams - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i2.7228 Biological Sciences
Camargo, Janielly Carvalho; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Machado Velho, Luiz Felipe; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
This study verified the existence of longitudinal patterns in species composition, richness, density and biomass of flagellate protozoan in tropical streams and investigated whether the possible zonation patterns are different between two periods of the year. For this, samplings were carried out in three regions from 10 streams, during the summer and winter. The flagellate community may be considered species-rich, because it was represented by 106 taxa, belonging to 8 orders and 1 residual group. The values of density and biomass are greater than those commonly found in other lotic environments, with mean values close to 2.3x104 cels. mL-1 and 150.8 µgC L-1. We did not observe any conspicuous and significant longitudinal pattern of the attributes...

Lizard assemblages on sandy coastal plains in southeastern Brazil: An analysis of occurrence and composition, and the role of habitat structure Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,JANE C.F.; PEREIRA-RIBEIRO,JULIANE; WINCK,GISELE R.; ROCHA,CARLOS F.D..
Abstract Data on the structure of lizard communities in the different biomes and ecosystems of Brazil are still limited. In this study, we related the species richness, abundance and the spatial occurrence of lizards to the structure of the vegetation found on the coast of the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil, to determine whether habitat influences the structure of lizard communities. We conducted fieldwork in 2012, 2013 and 2014, collecting data in standardized samples. We analyze whether variables of vegetation structure influenced species richness and abundance, using Generalized Linear Models (GLMs). We recorded 12 lizard species from eight families. In general, species richness and abundance were similar among sites. Locally, we recorded...

Community structure of microfitobenthos from the central coastal zone of Venezuela Boletín de Investigaciones
Pereira,Carlos; De Roa,Evelyn Zoppi; Montiel,Edie; Hernández,Vanessa; Castillo,Anyoelis.
ABSTRACT Microphytobenthos is a community that groups benthic photosynthetic microorganisms. In Venezuela and the other countries in the Caribbean Sea, this group has been scarcely studied, so its diversity is unknown. This study aims to describe the spatial and temporal variations of its composition and abundance in the central coastal zone of Venezuela. Samplings were conducted monthly from June 2014 to March 2015, in random stations at depths less than 20 m. Richness and abundance data were processed through multivariate hypothesis tests (Anosim - SIMPER - nMDS). A total of 327 species were identified, with a dominance of diatoms and dinoflagellates, without significant spatial and temporal variations. In terms of abundance, the most representative...
