In 1999, BioFach/Oekowelt GmbH commissioned Foundation Ecology & Agriculture SOEL to compile statistical data and general information on organic agriculture world-wide. Since then this study has been revised annually, and the newest figures are regularly presented at Biofach, which takes place in Nuremberg, Germany, every year. Since the 2003 edition the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL and the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) have collaborated in this project. For the sixth edition, February 2004, the reports were newly written or revised and the statistical material was up-dated. An extensive chapter on standards and regulations was added. The main findings can be summarised as follows: • Organic... |

Organic agriculture can contribute to meaningful socio-economic and ecologically sustainable development, especially in poorer countries. On one hand, this is due to the application of organic principles, which means efficient management of local resources (e.g. local seed varieties, manure, etc.) and therefore cost-effectiveness. On the other hand, the market for organic products – at local and international level – has tremendous growth prospects and offers creative producers and exporters in the South excellent opportunities to improve their income and living conditions. Establishing whether organic agriculture is a viable alternative for a particular holding needs to be carried out on a case-by-case basis. |

The Czech organic farming is continuously growing and has reached almost 12 % of the farmland acreage in the Czech Republic. The main driving force in the development of the organic farming in the Czech Republic are subsidies; which led to the fact that there is mainly grassland in the organic system (82,5 %). Concerning the organic plant production there is a significant increase in the organic viticulture (965 ha), the most important crops are cereals followed by fodder crops. The organic land burden in livestock units is very low (with beef cattle being the most numerous). The share of organic products on the Czech food market is still small (less than 1 %) compared to the developed EU countries and about a half of the sold goods was produced abroad.... |

Organic sheep breeding in Croatia is based on indigenous breeds, which are well adapted to their environment. This practice eliminates most of the problems usually encountered when imported foreign breeds have to be adjusted to the new conditions. Karst areas, encompassing about 50% of Croatian territory, are the natural habitat to eight of nine indigenous sheep breeds. These areas are nearly free from pollution, which makes them ideal for organic production. These facts were the foundations for the onset of the projects “Organic lamb production in Croatia” and “Standardisation of some health parameters of Croatian indigenous sheep breeds”. Their goal is to promote and support the development of organic sheep production in Croatian karst areas. In the... |

Farmer associations developed the first standards for organic production in the middle of the last century. The first international standards were published by IFOAM in 1980. The first legislative initiatives were developed by some European countries (e.g. Austria, France) in the 1980s. In 1991, the EU passed the organic regulation 2092/91 and set standards with major implications for international trade, and included not only production standards, but also standards for labeling and inspection. Various countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia introduced legislation in the 1990s. In 1999, Codex Alimentarius approved the first guidelines for organic plant production. Livestock production was included in 2001. In the new millennium, most major economies... |

Australia’s involvement in the organic movement is dated from 1928 in this account. There have been four ‘waves’ of organic advocacy in Australia. The First Wave (1920s & 1930s) follows Rudolf Steiner’s 1924 call at Koberwitz (now Kobierzyce, Poland) for a differentiated agriculture. Australian anthroposophists, beginning with Ernesto Genoni, responded to this call by joining Steiner’s Agricultural Experimental Circle (AEC) of Anthroposophical Farmers and Gardeners which was coordinated from Dornach, Switzerland by Dr Ehrenfried Pfeiffer. Bob Williams presented the first public lecture on biodynamics at the home of Walter Burley and Marion Mahoney Griffin at Castlecrag (Sydney) in 1938. The Second Wave of organic agriculture in Australia (1940s &... |

To develop strategies for the increase of organic production in Luxemburg, NGOs have initiated this empirical study. In total about 120 farmers will be interviewed to investigate motives and barriers for conversion and attitudes towards organic farming. Results are recommendations for political activities, information and advice. First results show surprising similarities with a study in Lower Saxony in 2003: Motives and barriers for conversion seem to be relatively independent of structural conditions and the development of the organic market. The differences are more obvious according to farmers interest, attitudes and knowledge about organic farming. |

Colombia had during 2010 around 40190 Ha. Organic, with 7400 Ha. in conversion process. This mean that only 0,1% of the land was cultivated organically, very few in comparission with Argentina and Mexico that keep an area around 2-3% during the las 5 years. Colombia has 70% of their organic area dedicated to produce fruits, coffee and heart of palm, and other 25% to produce oils and cane. The country produced in 2010 around 7 millions tons of organic products. Colombia had sucessfull experiences in production and marketing of some tropical products as banana, mango, pineapple, dried fruits, coffee, and palm oil. But it is very poor their experience in animal production. Led by the Agricultural Ministry, there are an Interinstitutional Organic... |
