Performance of the AquaCrop model for the wheat crop in the subtropical zone in Southern Brazil PAB
Rosa,Stefanie Lais Kreutz; Souza,Jorge Luiz Moretti de; Tsukahara,Rodrigo Yoiti.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to calibrate and validate the AquaCrop model for the wheat (Triticum aestivum) crop in the Campos Gerais region, in Southern Brazil. Five cultivars were evaluated in the harvests from 2007 to 2017. The input data for AquaCrop - related to climate, crop, soil, and soil management -, collected in the field, were obtained from the database of Fundação ABC and from the literature. From 35 to 43% of total harvests were selected for calibration, and the remaining, for validation. Calibration was performed for the parameters most sensitive to crop potential yield penalty. The simulated yields were compared with those observed in the field through simple linear regression analysis, root mean square error (RMSE), Pearson’s...

Nitrogen fertilization impact on agronomic traits of maize hybrids released at different decades PAB
Sangoi,Luís; Ender,Márcio; Guidolin,Altamir Frederico; Almeida,Milton Luiz de; Konflanz,Valmor Antônio.
Genetic selection of maize hybrids is often conducted using high N rates during the breeding cycle. This procedure may either lead to the release of genotypes that present nitrogen luxury consumption or require a stronger N input to accomplish their yield potential. This work was carried out to evaluate the effects of N rates on grain yield and N use efficiency of hybrids cultivated in different decades in Southern Brazil. The trial was performed in Lages, Santa Catarina State. A split plot design was used. Hybrids Ag 12, Ag 28, Ag 303 and Ag 9012, released during the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, respectively, were evaluated in the main plots. Nitrogen rates equivalent to 0, 50, 100 and 200 kg ha-1 were side-dressed in the split-plots when each hybrid had...

Effect of weed interference on soybean cultivars at two sowing times Planta Daninha
Marangoni,R.E.; Jakelaitis,A.; Tavares,C.J.; Rezende,B.P.M.; Mello Filho,O.L.; Cunha,P.C.R..
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of weed interference on soybean cultivars at two sowing times in Urutaí, GO. The treatments were arranged in split-plots, and the sowing times (November 16 and December 16, 2009) were allocated in the plots; the soybean cultivars [BRSGO Amaralina, P98C81 (semi-late cycle) BRSGO Raissa, BRSGO Indiara, P98Y11 (median cycle) and BRSGO 7560, BRSGO Caiapônia, Emgopa 302RR (early cycle)] were allocated in the split-plots; and the coexistence or non coexistence of soybean cultivars with weeds, throughout their cycle, was allocated in the split-plots. Non coexistence was established by manual weeding. The experiment was arranged in randomized blocks with four replications. It was verified that the optimal time for sowing...

Estimating productivity of water at different spatial scales using simulation modeling AgEcon
Droogers, Peter; Kite, Geoff.
A clear understanding of the current water balance is required to explore options for water saving measures. However, measurement of all the terms in the water balance is infeasible in terms of spatial and temporal scale, but hydrological simulation models can fill the gap between measured and required data. For a basin in Western Turkey, simulation modeling at three different scales, field, irrigation scheme and basin scale, was performed to obtain all terms of the water balance. These water balance numbers were used to calculate the Productivity of Water at the three spatial levels distinguished to assess the performance of the systems.

Policies drain the North China Plain: Agricultural policy and groundwater depletion in Luancheng County, 1949-2000 AgEcon
Kendy, Eloise; Molden, David J.; Steenhuis, Tammo S.; Liu, Changming; Wang, Jinxia.
The report examines the relationships between agricultural policies in the North China Plain, the approaches to water management that evolved from them, the quantity of water that was actually used, and the consequent groundwater depletion beneath Luancheng County, Hebei Province, from 1949 to 2000. To systematically address these relationships, we use a comprehensive water-balance approach. Our results indicate that a single, longstanding policy-that of using groundwater to meet the crop-water requirements not supplied by precipitation-is responsible for the steady rate of groundwater decline.

Economic Returns to Public Agricultural Research AgEcon
Fuglie, Keith O.; Heisey, Paul W..
Over the last several decades, the U.S. agricultural sector has sustained impressive productivity growth. The Nation's agricultural research system, including Federal-State public research as well as private-sector research, has been a key driver of this growth. Economic analysis finds strong and consistent evidence that investment in agricultural research has yielded high returns per dollar spent. These returns include benefits not only to the farm sector but also to the food industry and consumers in the form of more abundant commodities at lower prices.

ON ECONOMIC-MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR TECHNOLOGY OF DIFFERENTIATED APPLICATION OF FERTILIZERS AgEcon
Litchman, Gennadiy; Nukeshev, Sayahat.
The paper studies agricultural crops’ yield depending on quality of entering of mineral fertilizers. It is established that determining average productivity, under square-law dependence of yield on a dose, there is not necessity to set the law of fertilizers distribution across the field and will be sufficient to know expected value D and standard deviation sD. The paper considers approaches to economic-mathematical model of optimization of fertilizers’ doses at the differentiated entering. The produced result provides a new approach to the quality control in technological process of fertilizers application. Also, it allows formulating requirements to perspective technical means used for entering of mineral fertilizers.

“Bright spots” in Uzbekistan, reversing land and water degradation while improving livelihoods: Key developments and sustaining ingredients for transition economies of the former Soviet Union AgEcon
Noble, Andrew D.; Ul Hassan, Mehmood; Kazbekov, Jusipbek.
Following the dissolution of the former Soviet Union and the collapse of existing trade arrangements, the newly independent states of Central Asia were left with the task of developing their own independent market economies. The region has undergone tremendous economic and social changes including significant agricultural reform mainly targeted at privatizing large collective farms that were established during the Soviet era. These reforms include the establishment of smaller private and cooperative farms in order to improve the efficiency and equity of existing production systems. Within Uzbekistan, this move to privatize farms has, in the majority of cases, led to declining productivity and net incomes. However, there have been instances where privatized...

An Agricultural Statistical Profile of Bangladesh, 1947-1999 AgEcon
Chowdhury, Mohammad A.T.; Zulfikar, Harry.
This is the seventh in the series of the Centre's publications providing specific and wide-ranging data on coarse grains, pulses, roots and tuber (CGPRT) crops in the humid tropics of Asia and the Pacific. The crop sub-sector dominates the agricultural scenario in Bangladesh. The greater uniformity of the landmass, the fertile alluvial soil and the tropical monsoon climate provide excellent conditions for crop production. If other things remain unchanged, agriculture will continue to play the main role in the growth and stability of the economy of Bangladesh for many years to come. This volume covers time-series statistics of Bangladesh on seventeen CGPRT crops plus two major cereals (rice and wheat) reporting area, production and yield at both national...
