Lolium Multiflorum seeds in the soil: II. Longevity under natural conditions Rev. bras. sementes
Maia,Fernanda Costa; Maia,Manoel De Souza; Bekker,Renée M.; Berton,Rogério Previatti; Caetano,Leandro Sebastião.
The interest was the seed longevity dynamics of annual ryegrass in natural conditions as an important tool to explain its dynamics in no tillage systems used in the South of Brazil. The species is commonly managed for natural re-sowing and, in this way, allows cattle grazing with reduced costs during the winter time. In February of 2003, twenty bags of nylon screen containing sterilised soil with 100 seeds in each were randomly buried in the field, 5 cm deep. Around every three or four months, four sacks were exhumed. Seeds were counted and tested using germination and tetrazolium tests. The seeds showed high primary dormancy, which was overcome very fast. After 108, 226, 326, 565 and 732 days of burial there were no significant differences as the secondary...

Action of gibberellic acid (GA3) on dormancy and activity of alpha-amylase in rice seeds Rev. bras. sementes
Vieira,Antônio Rodrigues; Vieira,Maria das Graças Guimarães Carvalho; Fraga,Antônio C.; Oliveira,João Almir; Santos,Custódio D. dos.
To evaluate the effectiveness of gibberellic acid (GA3) in breaking rice seed dormancy and the use of alpha-amylase enzyme activity as an indicator of the dormancy level, seed from the intensively dormant irrigated cultivar Urucuia were used. The seeds were submitted to a pre-drying process in a forced air circulation chamber under 40ºC during 7 days and submersed in 30 mL of GA3 solution under 0, 10, 30 and 60 mg/L H2O concentrations, during 2, 24 and 36 hours. After the treatments, the alpha-amylase activity was determined by using the polyacrilamide electrophoresis and spectrophotometry. At the same time, the germination test was made. The results indicated a gain in germination and in alpha-amylase activity in higher concentrations and soaking time of...

Viability of barley seeds by the tetrazolium test Rev. bras. sementes
Grzybowski,Camila Ribeiro de Souza; Ohlson,Osvaldo de Castro; Silva,Rosemeire Carvalho da; Panobianco,Maristela.
The tetrazolium test is used to control seed quality of various plant species since it allows a rapid evaluation of viability. Freshly harvested barley seeds show dormancy that can make the germination test ineffective for an immediate evaluation. Therefore, the development of more efficient methods, such as the tetrazolium test, is necessary. The objective of this research work was to study various procedures for performing the tetrazolium test on barley seeds. Five lots of cv. BRS 195 barley seeds were used and subjected to the following treatments: two different methods of seed preconditioning (direct immersion in H2O and between sheets of moistened paper towels); two types of preparation for staining (longitudinal cross-section of the seed through the...

Miranda,Marcel S.; Fontenelle,José H..
ABSTRACT. The population dynamics of Megalobulimus paranaguensis (Pilsbry & Ihering, 1900), a large and long-lived land gastropod from Brazil's Southeast (Atlantic Forest) was studied between 2006 and 2009, at an urban park in the city of Santos, state of São Paulo. The study included biometry, weighing, and marking and recapture of adult individuals. The variables obtained from specimens were correlated with the environmental variables of the study period. The survival rate of the adult snail population was 96.7%. Recruitment showed several peaks during the year, and was concentrated between April and August, except in 2009, when there was only one peak in August. Specimen abundance progressively increased from 2006 on, with a trend towards relative...

Araújo,Alisson Vinicius de; Araújo,Eduardo Fontes; Amaro,Hugo Tiago Ribeiro; Santos,Ricardo Henrique Silva; Cecon,Paulo Roberto.
ABSTRACT Although used as green manure, one of the challenges the cultivation of Crotalaria juncea is the low availability of quality seeds in the market. The harvest at the right time contributes to the achievement of better quality seeds. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the storability and characterize the physical and physiological changes of the seeds harvested at different times. The statistical design was completely randomized with three replications. Treatments consisted of four harvest seasons and two storage periods (0 to 8 months). The samples were collected when the plants reached 40, 60, 80 and 100% of dried pods. The following characteristics were evaluated: time for drying, moisture content, dry matter accumulation, physical...

Effects of continuous drought and immersion on hatchability of Ochlerotatus albifasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) eggs stored at low temperature Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Campos,Raúl E; Sy,Victoria E.; Castro,Luis.
The role of environmental factors on the hatching response of O. albifasciatus (Macquart) eggs is studied by simulating winter conditions in the laboratory. The hypothesis tested was that hatching response is affected by: (1) time that eggs remain at low temperature, (2) storage conditions, and (3) acclimatization time. Eggs were stored at 5ºC in drought and immersion conditions during 7, 21, 35, 90 and 146 days, immediately after, they were acclimatized at 22ºC during 24, 72, and 168 hours, and then eggs were flooded to induce hatching. Percent of hatched eggs was analyzed with a Generalized Lineal Model with a binomial distribution. Results show that: (1) a long storage period at cold temperature and long acclimatization periods improve the hatching...

Preventing thermoinhibition in a thermosensitive lettuce genotype by seed imbibition at low temperature Scientia Agricola
Nascimento,Warley Marcos.
Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seed germination is strongly temperature dependent and under high temperatures, germination of most of genotypes can be erratic or completely inhibited. Lettuce seeds of 'Dark Green Boston' (DGB) were incubated at temperatures ranging from 15° to 35°C at light and dark conditions. Other seeds were imbibed in dark at 20°; 25°; 30°; and 35°C for 8 and 16 hours and then transferred to 20 or 35°C, in dark. Seeds were also incubated at constant temperature of 20° and 35 °C, in the dark, as control. In another treatment, seeds were primed for 3 days at 15°C with constant light. DGB lettuce seeds required light to germinate adequately at temperatures above 25°C. Seeds incubated at 20°C had 97% germination, whereas seeds incubated at...

Ethylene and lettuce seed germination Scientia Agricola
Nascimento,Warley Marcos.
Ethylene can stimulate seed germination and overcome dormancy in many species. For instance, the inhibitory effect of high temperature on lettuce seed germination can be overcome by exogenous ethylene. Involvement of ethylene in seed germination is a widely accepted fact, but the mechanistic details are poorly understood. A critical factor in ethylene studies is the response of seed germination properties to various ethylene inhibitors. Lettuce seed has been used as a model to study the role of ethylene in seed germination at high temperature. The role of ethylene in germination is not known but either ethylene evolution or addition of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxilic acid (ACC) have been associated with increased activity of endo-beta-mannanase, a...

Seed traits of species from South Brazilian grasslands with contrasting distribution Acta Botanica
Martins,Alexandre Cristante; Marchioretto,Rafaella Migliavacca; Vieira,Ariane Tonetto; Stiehl-Alves,Eudes Maria; Santos,Eliane Kaltchuk dos; Souza-Chies,Tatiana Teixeira de.
ABSTRACT South Brazilian grasslands are among the most species-rich grasslands worldwide yet they have been suffering ongoing degradation due to land-use. Little is known about the reproductive ecology of the native species of these grasslands. Thus, our goal was to characterize seed traits and germination requirements of three native species of the tribe Tigridieae (Iridaceae, Iridoideae) due to its richness in the Pampa biome and the contrasting morphology, cytogenetics, and geographic distributions of its representatives. We tested if closely related species possess similar seed traits and whether species with wider distributions have broader germination requirements. Seed production and mass were estimated, and morphological analyses, germination...

Can “Caricia” and “Princesa” apples be considered low-chilling cultivars? Agronomy
Castro, Damián César; Alvarez, Norma; Gabriel, Paola; Buyatti, Marcela; Favaro, Juan Carlos; Gariglio, Norberto.
The purpose of this work was to study the response of two apple cultivars bred for low chilling environments to artificial chilling accumulation. Two trials were carried out; in experiment one, excised shoots were randomly taken from “Caricia” and “Princesa”, and in experiment two, intact and excised shoots of “Caricia”, “Princesa” and “Gala” (control) were collected. After collection, both shoot types were exposed to artificial chilling accumulation (4.0 ± 0.5°C) from 0 to 1200 chill units (CU). Bud break of mixed buds of “Caricia” and “Princesa” was higher than 50% between 0 CU to 1200 CU, irrespective of shoot type. Bud break of “Gala” mixed buds exceeded 50% only in intact shoots after accumulating 900 CU. The mean time to bud break of “Caricia” and...

Southern highland papaya (Vasconcellea quercifolia A. St.-Hil.): Do fruit ripening and harvesting time affect seed germination? Agronomy
Urtasun, María Manuela; Giamminola, Eugenia Mabel; Viana, Marta Leonor de.
In this work, we report the effects of the harvesting time, the stages in fruit ripening and the influence of potassium nitrate in V. quercifolia seed germination. In addition, information about the storage period and light requirements is provided. Fruits were harvested at the beginning and at the end of the fruiting season, and they were classified into five ripening categories. Seed germination was evaluated with two factorial experiments: 1) harvesting time, fruit ripening, and pre-germination treatment; 2) storage and light requirements. The response variables were germination percentage, mean germination time, and seedling vigor. Seeds harvested at the beginning of the season appeared to be less dormant and they were not influenced by fruit ripening...

Advances in the production of temperate fruits in the tropics Agronomy
Pio, Rafael; Souza, Filipe Bittencourt Machado de; Kalcsits, Lee; Bisi, Rayane Barcelos; Farias, Daniela da Hora.
The present study aimed to review the advances in the production of temperate fruits to determine future research directions that improve production in the tropics. Temperate fruits are no longer only produced in regions characterized by a cold winter period. These fruits are also produced in the sub-tropical and tropical regions characterized by mild winter or even the absence of chilling conditions often required by the tree to break dormancy. Currently, temperate fruit production is possible in certain regions of South America, Africa and Asia that are near to the Equator. However, temperate tree fruit production in tropical regions requires modified techniques to overcome dormancy and allow adequate flowering, growth and productivity. The main...

Physiological quality of castor bean seed genotypes stored at two temperatures Agronomy
Drumond, Anailda Angélica Lana; Sales, Juliana de Fatima; Zuchi, Jacson; Camelo, Gessimar Nunes; Souza, Moara Mariely Vinhais.
Environment and storage time influence stored seed quality, especially for oilseeds such as castor beans because they have a high lipid content and are more prone to deterioration. This study evaluated the physiological quality of seeds from three castor bean genotypes stored at 10 and 20°C for 300 days. The experimental design was completely randomized, with 4 replications, in a 2 x 6 (2 temperatures x 6 storage periods) split-plot design. The seeds were placed in low-density polypropylene bags and stored in climatic chambers at 10 and 20°C, in which the temperature and relative humidity were registered. Physiological quality (germination, germination rate index, emergence, rate of emergence, electrical conductivity and accelerated aging) were evaluated...

Germination and emergence of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) seeds obtained by self- and open-pollination Agronomy
Santos, Carlos Eduardo Magalhães dos; Morgado, Marcos Antônio Dell'Orto; Matias, Rosana Gonçalves Pires; Wagner Júnior, Américo; Bruckner, Claudio Horst.
Seed dormancy is an important adaptive mechanism in many species and is generally lost during plant domestication because of selection that occurs through the collection and planting of seeds. We compared germination and seedling emergence in selfed and open-pollinated progenies obtained from eight passion fruit vines (genotypes). Self-pollination was performed at the button stage to overcome self-incompatibility. The experiment was a randomized block design in a factorial scheme (2 x 8; type of progeny x genotypes) with four replicates and 50 seeds per experimental unit. At 14, 21 and 28 days after sowing, the germination percentage and the emergence speed index were analyzed. The total length of seedlings (cm), shoot length (cm), radicle length (cm) and...
