Trophic ecology of suspension-feeding bivalves inhabiting a north-eastern Pacific coastal lagoon: Comparison of different biomarkers ArchiMer
Mathieu-resuge, Margaux; Kraffe, Edouard; Le Grand, Fabienne; Boens, Andy; Bideau, Antoine; Lluch-cota, Salvador E.; Racotta, Ilie S.; Schaal, Gauthier.
Understanding the nature and origins of food sources supporting coastal lagoon-inhabiting organisms is necessary to evaluate the ecological status of such ecosystems. The trophic ecology of a bivalve specie Spondylus crassisquama was studied in the Ojo de Liebre lagoon (Baja California, Mexico), combining stable isotope (SI), fatty acid (FA) and sterols analyses along a transect under oceanic influences. The second objective of the study was to investigate if sterols compositions give complementary information to those obtained from FA and SI. Temporal and spatial patterns of the three biomarkers in bivalve tissues suggest oceanic inputs at the mouth of the lagoon, while the inner station was characterized by a contribution of local sources including an...

Oil gland and oil pores in billfishes: in search of a function ArchiMer
Dhellemmes, F.; Hansen, M. J.; Bouet, S. D.; Videler, J. J.; Domenici, P.; Steffensen, J. F.; Hildebrandt, T.; Fritsch, G.; Bach, Pascal; Sabarros, Philippe; Krüger, A.; Kurvers, R. H. J. M.; Krause, J..
Billfishes are well known for their distinctive elongated rostra, i.e. bills. The functional significance of billfish rostra has been frequently discussed and the recent discovery of an oil gland (glandula oleofera) at the base of the rostrum in swordfish, Xiphias gladius, has added an interesting facet to this discussion regarding the potential co-evolution of gland and rostra. Here, we investigated the oil gland and oil pores (through which the oil is brought to the skin surface) of four billfish species – swordfish, Atlantic blue marlin (Makaira nigricans), Indo-Pacific sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and striped marlin (Kajikia audax) – and provide detailed evidence for the presence of an oil gland in the last three. All four species had a high...

Lipid content and fatty acid composition of a marine-derived Trichoderma longibrachiatum strain cultured by agar surface and submerged fermentations ArchiMer
Ruiz, Nicolas; Dubois, Nolwenn; Wielgosz Collin, Gaetane; Du Pont, Thibaut; Berge, Jean-pascal; Pouchus, Yves-francois; Barnathan, Gilles.
A marine-related Trichoderma longibrachiatum strain isolated from mussels in a farming shellfish area was investigated for total lipid (TL) production, total lipid fatty acids (TLFA), and phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA). Fungal biomass was produced from two different marine-like culture ways, on agar surface and submerged fermentations (ASF and SmF, respectively), allowing useful comparisons. ASF produced a rather higher biomass amount than SmF with similar TL content. All fatty acids (FA), identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), were ranged from 14 to 30 carbon atoms. Similar FA compositions were found in TL and phospholipids (PL) from biomasses obtained by both fermentation systems, including oleic (up to 15.3% of total FA mixture for...

L'absorption intestinale des lipides chez la truite arc-en-ciel (Salmo gairdneri ) ArchiMer
Vernier, J; Sire, M.
Though the absorption of dietary lipids is much slower in S. gairdneri than in mammals, the mechanism does not differ fundamentally. The long chain fatty acids resulting from intraluminal hydrolysis are esterified by the epithelial cells and transferred as VLDL-like particles and chylomicrons to lymph. The size of granules depends on the nature of the ingested fatty acids. The intracellular stages of this lipoprotein synthesis are defined.

Does broodstock nutritional history affect the response of progeny to different first-feeding diets? A whole-body transcriptomic study of rainbow trout alevins ArchiMer
Lazzarotto, Viviana; Corraze, Genevieve; Larroquet, Laurence; Mazurais, David; Medale, Francoise.
The whole-body transcriptome of trout alevins was characterised to investigate the effects of long-term feeding of rainbow trout broodstock females a diet free of fishmeal and fish oil on the metabolic capacities of progeny. Effects were studied before first feeding and after 3 weeks of feeding diets containing different proportions of marine and plant ingredients. Feeding alevins plant-based diets resulted in lower fish body weight, irrespective of maternal nutritional history. No differences in whole-body lipids were found between treatments, and the tissue fatty acid profile strongly reflected that of the respective broodstock or first-feeding diets. We showed that the maternal diet history did not significantly affect expressions of any genes before...

The combined effects of blue light and dilution rate on lipid class and fatty acid composition of Tisochrysis lutea ArchiMer
Marchetti, Julie; Da Costa, Fiz; Bougaran, Gael; Quere, Claudie; Soudant, Philippe; Robert, Rene.
The lipid class and the fatty acid compositions of microalgae highly influence bivalve larval and post-larval development. Light is an essential environmental factor for microalgal culture, and quantity and quality of light may induce changes in the biochemical composition of the algae. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of light spectrum (blue vs. white light) on lipid class and fatty acid compositions of Tisochrysis lutea cultured in a chemostat. Two different dilution rates (D) were assayed for each light spectrum: 0.2 and 0.7 day−1. Triacylglycerol (TAG), sterol, and hydrocarbon (HC) content increased sharply at low D. The proportion of alkenones was significantly reduced under blue light. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and...

Effects of nutritional requirement of live food organisms on growth and survival of barramundi/seabass Lates calcarifer (Bloch) larvae. ArchiMer
Rimmer, M; Reed, A.
Larvae of barramundi (Lates calcarifer ) reared intensively in some Australian hatcheries have suffered periodic high mortalities which have been ascribed to nutritional deficiencies in the live food organisms used, particularly deficiencies of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Barramundi larvae reared in an experimental system and fed on four diets, representing combinations of supplemented and unsupplemented rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis ) and supplemented and unsupplemented brine shrimp (Artemia salina ). Supplementation of rotifers and brine shrimp with a commercially available microencapsulated diet increased the levels of several polyunsaturated fatty acids in the food organisms.

Physiological and biochemical changes associated with massive mortality events occurring in larvae of American oyster (Crassostrea virginica) ArchiMer
Genard, Bertrand; Pernet, Fabrice; Lemarchand, Karine; Boudry, Pierre; Moraga, Dario; Tremblay, Rejean.
In this paper, biochemical and physiological analyses were used to characterize changes associated with mortality event occurred during veliger development of American oyster, Crassostrea virginica. Biochemical analyses included the evaluation of lipid classes, fatty acid composition and total protein content. Larval physiology was evaluated by studying feeding activity, enzymes related to energy metabolism, oxidative stress levels and enzymatic antioxidant defenses. These analyses were complemented by bacterial community analyses as well as by measuring larval oyster performance. We observed that mortality events coincided with (1) strong changes in the surrounding bacterial community; (2) a progressive decrease in feeding activity; (3) higher levels of...

Coastal waters freshening and extreme seasonality affect organic matter sources, quality, and transfers in a High Arctic fjord (Young Sound, Greenland) ArchiMer
Bridier, Guillaume; Meziane, Tarik; Grall, Jacques; Chauvaud, Laurent; Sejr, Mikael Kristian; Menneteau, Sylvain; Olivier, Frederic.
Arctic benthic ecosystems are expected to experience strong modifications in the dynamics of primary producers and/or benthic-pelagic coupling under climate change. However, lack of knowledge about the influence of physical constraints (e.g. ice-melting associated gradients) on organic matter sources, quality, and transfers in systems such as fjords can impede predictions of the evolution of benthic-pelagic coupling in response to global warming. Here, sources and quality of particulate organic matter (POM) and sedimentary organic matter (SOM) were characterized along an inner-outer gradient in a High Artic fjord (Young Sound, NE Greenland) exposed to extreme seasonal and physical constraints (ice-melting associated gradients). The influence of the...

Consumption vs. deposition of essential fatty acids in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) larvae fed semi-purified diets ArchiMer
Robin, Jean; Peron, Alexandre.
Semi-purified diets were used to feed gilthead sea bream larvae as first food from mouth opening until day 17. Four diets were formulated on the basis of a previous one used as control (D1). Three experimental diets differed only by the lipids added. One diet contained n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) plus arachidonic acid (D2), one diet n-3 HUFA without arachidonic acid (D3) and one diet without n-3 and n-6 HUFA (D4). The three experimental diets contained 18:3n-6 in order to follow the influence of dietary HUFAs on elongation-desaturation capacities. Larval growth and survival were similar with diet D1 and D2. Lowest growth and survival were observed for larvae fed the HUFA free diet D4. Larval survival but not growth was significantly...

Polar lipid fatty acids as indicators of trophic associations in a deep-sea vent system community ArchiMer
Colaco, Ana; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Guezennec, Jean.
The polar lipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles of invertebrates living in chemosynthetic communities can indicate the degree to which these animals depend on specific types of bacteria. To identify the nutritional sources of various species from deep-sea hydrothermal vents of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a Principal Component Analysis was performed using individual PLFA profiles as descriptors. Two associations representing different feeding groups were identified: (i) mussels, commensal polychaetes and gastropods, (ii) shrimps and crabs. The first association relies more on sulphide-oxidizing bacteria, while the second one has more anaerobic sulphate-reducing bacteria biomarkers. Other small invertebrates reveal different diets. The polychaete Amathys lutzi shows...

Fatty acids from lipids of marine organisms: Molecular biodiversity, roles as biomarkers, biologically active compounds, and economical aspects ArchiMer
Berge, Jean-pascal; Barnathan, Gilles.
Because of their characteristic living environments, marine organisms produce a variety of lipids. Fatty acids constitute the essential part of triglycerides and wax esters, which are the major components of fats and oils. Nevertheless, phospholipids and glycolipids have considerable importance and will be taken into account, especially the latter compounds that excite increasing interest regarding their promising biological activities. Thus, in addition to the major polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) such as eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids, a great number of various fatty acids occur in marine organisms, e.g. saturated, mono- and diunsaturated, branched, halogenated, hydroxylated, methoxylated, non-methylene-interrupted. Various...

Effets de la salinité et de la température du milieu sur le degré de saturation des acides gras et sur les différentes catégories lipidiques des alevins de Mugil cephalus. OceanDocs
El Cafsi., M.; Kheriji., S.; Masmoudi., W.; Romdhane., M.S..
