The foraminiferal fauna of the Bony estuary: A baseline study. OceanDocs
Dublin-Green, C.O..
The effect of oil exploration, production and other oil related industrial activities on the estuarine environment of the Niger Delta has resulted in increasing need of baseline information to be used as background levels against which pollution effects could be detected and monitored. A one-year (December, 1986 - December, 1987) baseline survey of the benthic foraminiferal fauna of the Bonny estuary showed that arenaceous forminifera strongly dominated the total and living assemblages. The subordinate calcareous groups were mostly found in the lower reaches of the estuary. The foraminiferal fauna was represented by thirty-three species, twenty-three of which were arenaceous, nine calcareous and one porcellaneous. Twenty nine of the thirty-three species...

The importance of turbellarians in the marine meiobenthos: a review OMA
Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
Recent data and opinions on meiofaunal ecology are briefly reviewed; and from scattered data, the place of turbellarians in the meiobenthic community is discussed. Turbellarian diversity is of the same magnitude higher in sandy habitats than in muddy bottoms. In sand, turbellarian diversity is of the same magnitude as that of other important meiofaunal taxa, while densities range between 7-25% of the total meiofauna. Mean individual turbellarian dry weight seems to be four times that of nematodes and in sandy habitats turbellarian biomass may be equal to or exceed that of nematodes. Most turbellarian species may be considered as predators and in this respect may take the place occupied by macrofaunal species in muddy sediments.

Synopsis of knowledge on Cnidaria Medusozoa from Brazil Biota Neotropica
Marques,Antonio C.; Morandini,André C.; Migotto,Alvaro E..
A synopsis of knowledge concerning Medusozoa (Cnidaria) along the Brazilian coast is presented. We generated a data list with all records of medusozoans from Brazil, including information on the distribution of the species and the phase (polyp or medusa) recorded. Currently the number of species of Medusozoa recorded from Brazil is 377 (205 genera and 82 families), with 348 species of hydrozoans, 22 scyphozoans, 3 cubozoans and 1 staurozoan. Geographical and historical analyses were carried out based on the data list. The geographical analysis reveals that knowledge on biodiversity of the group is most inadequate for the North and part of the Northeastern coast. Although the Southeastern coast is the best known region in number of species and...

Effects of reduced-impact logging on medium and large-bodied forest vertebrates in eastern Amazonia Biota Neotropica
Laufer,Juliana; Michalski,Fernanda; Peres,Carlos A..
Standard line-transect census techniques were deployed to generate a checklist and quantify the abundance of medium and large-bodied vertebrate species in forest areas of eastern Amazonia with and without a history of reduced-impact logging (RIL). Three areas were allocated a total of 1,196.9 km of line-transect census effort. Sampling was conducted from April to June 2012 and from April to August 2013, and detected 29 forest vertebrate species considered in this study belonging to 15 orders, 20 families and 28 genera. Additionally, eight species were recorded outside census walks through direct and indirect observations. Of this total, six species are considered vulnerable according to IUCN (Ateles paniscus, Myrmecophaga tridactyla, Priodontes maximus,...

Invertebrates associated with Paspalum repens (Poaceae) at the mouth of Caracu Stream (1991-1992), affluent of the Paraná River, Porto Rico - PR - Brazil BABT
Souza-Franco,Gilza Maria de; Takeda,Alice Michiyo.
Temporal distributions of Paspalum repens at the mouth of the Caracu Stream on the left margin of the Paraná River were characterized and analyzed. Samples of Paspalum repens were taken monthly from March 1991 to February 1992. Fauna consisted of many taxa: Gastropoda, Oligochaeta, Copepoda, Ephemeroptera, Hemiptera, Trichoptera, Lepidoptera, Chironomidae, Coleoptera and Hydracarina. With the exception of May 1991, low density of organisms was registered during the sampling period. During May 1991, a sharp decline in the Paraná River water level was noted. This fact suggested that organisms dispersed in the submersed vegetation during the flooding of the Paraná River must have concentrated in the stream margin and increased the density of organisms at this...
