Estrutura populacional de Pomadasys corvinaeformis (Steindachner) (Teleostei, Haemulidae) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso da Cunha.
Reproductive and biometrical analyses were pertormed on 1629 individuals of P. corvinaeformis collected monthly from October 1993 to September 1996, at Guaratuba Bay, Southern Brazilian coast. The results indicate that the species is more abundant in the mangrove area during winter, when the largest individuais were collected, and spring, when the water temperature is lower and the salinity higher than summer or autumn. The relationship of body weight to body length, for grouped sexes, is "lnTW= -12,0456 + 3,1831 lnTL". The monthly Condition Factor is highest during summer and lowest during winter. It is suggested that P. corvinaeformis is present in the mangrove area during a specific etape of its life cycle and does not use this area to maturation and...

The use of biomarkers for assessing effects of pollutant stress on fish species from a tropical river in Southeastern Brazil Biological Sciences
Morado, Claudio Nona; Araújo, Francisco Gerson; Gomes, Iracema David.
Biomarkers are measurements within an organism that respond to environmental effects and are used as tools in bioassessment programs since they reflect physiological changes induced by exposure to pollutants. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) and the condition factor (CF) in three fish species Geophagus brasiliensis, Hypostomus affinis and Hypostomus auroguttatus were used to assess effects of pollutant stress in a tropical river during two seasons (dry and wet). Fish from the least disturbed sites had the lowest condition factor (CF) and the lowest HSI, whereas those from sites near pollutant discharges had the highest CF and HSI. Higher HSI and lower CF occurred during the dry season. It is suggested that species adapted to stressful conditions take...

Effect of alcohol and formaldehyde on the δ13C and δ15N isotopic composition of Plagioscion squamosissimus and Hypophthalmus edentates (Pisces, Osteichthyes) - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i4.70 Biological Sciences
Manetta, Gislaine Iachstel; UEM; Benedito, Evanilde; UEM, Maringá; Ducatti, Carlos; UNESP.
The present study investigates the δ13C and δ15N isotopic composition in frozen samples (control), samples in alcohol and in formaldehyde of Plagioscion squamosissimus and Hypophthalmus edentates. From each individual we extracted a strip of muscle from the region above the lateral line, in the dorsal fin base, that was divided into three equal parts, each one was submitted to one type of treatment: freeze – control group (-15oC), conservation in alcohol 70% and fixation in formaldehyde 4%. Samples were kept under those treatments for 30 days, washed and submerged in distilled water for 4 hours. Afterwards, they were dried up in air oven at 60oC for 48 hours and macerated until the obtaining of a fine powder. A significant difference...

Life History Parameters of Genypterus brasiliensis (Teleostei: Ophidiidae), an Endemic Fisheries Resource of the Southwestern Atlantic Anais da ABC (AABC)
TOMÁS,ACÁCIO R.G.; ELEUTERIO,CELSO L.T.; VELASCO,GONZALO.
Abstract: Genypterus brasiliensis, a demersal fish of large size (1.3 m of total length), occurs in the southwest Atlantic (23 to 38oS) and well appreciated due to the quality of its flesh. It was analyzed through longline and trawl fisheries, and the average length and weight of 724 specimens were significantly different between them, with the biggest and heaviest specimens caught by the former. The weight-length relationships were significantly different based upon sex: females Wt=4x10-7Lt3.3799; r2=0.97; n=262; p<0.001, and males: Wt=4x10-7Lt3.3886; r2=0.95; n=190; p<0.001. Using the otoliths readings for 153 specimens (APE of 2% and CV of 4.2%), the growth parameters estimates reveal statistical differences between sexes (p=0.05; r2=0.889). The...

Ichthyofauna of streams of the Rio Sapucaí basin, upper Rio Paraná system, Minas Gerais, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Azevedo-Santos,Valter M.; Britski,Heraldo A.; Oliveira,Claudio; Benine,Ricardo C..
Abstract: The Rio Sapucaí basin, in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, is one of the many watersheds of the upper Rio Paraná system. Ichthyofauna surveys in this basin, in general, are scarce. In addition, small rivers and streams of the region have been targets of anthropogenic actions (e.g., pollution) - which suggest that more ichthyological studies must be performed within the watershed. In this study we provide a survey of species that occur within three streams of the lower Rio Sapucaí basin. Samples were collected in April, July, and November 2017 and in May 2018. Collections resulted in 349 individuals belonging to 28 species, five orders, and 12 families. Among our findings are three putatively undescribed species and the first record of Oligosarcus...

PECES Y MACROINVERTEBRADOS MÓVILES DE HÁBITATS ARTIFICIALES EN LA BAHÍA DE TAGANGA, CARIBE COLOMBIANO Boletín de Investigaciones
Delgadillo-Garzón,Óscar.
Fishes and macroinvertebrates associated to two types of artificial habitats deployed in Taganga Bay were assessed by stationary visual census to compare these assemblages. Forty-one species of fishes and nine macroinvertebrates were observed in eleven visual censuses. The distribution patterns depicted in abundance and richness between the two types of habitats used (concrete blocks vs. artificial shelters), were a possible response to dissimilarities in their location and number of visual census. A relative high fish richness and diversity were found in these artificial habitats, in comparison to other artificial structures in Colombia, probably owing to their proximity with heterogeneous natural habitats. The use of complex artificial habitats could...

DESCRIPCIÓN DE LA MORFOLOGÍA DENTAL Y DEL HÁBITO ALIMENTARIO DEL BESOTE JOTURUS PICHARDI (MUGILIFORMES: MUGILIDAE) Boletín de Investigaciones
Correa Polo,Francisco; Eslava Eljaiek,Pedro; Martínez P.,Carlos; Narváez Barandica,Juan Carlos.
The dental morphology of J. pichardi and its relation to dietary habits is described for the first time. This mugilid inhabits the torrential rivers of short course in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, that quickly lead into the Caribbean Sea. Joturus pichardi has heterodont dentition, with different forms that vary according to the tooth containing structure. The observed tooth structure is typical of omnivorous fishes, and consistent with the structure and composition of the diet analyzed. The latter was found dominated by mosses and aquatic macro invertebrates, mainly Chironomidae, a family of Diptera.

Physicochemical and microbiological changes in gutted and ungutted red tilapia (Oreochromis ssp) stored in ice Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Ruíz-Osorio,Yaneth L; Amorocho-Cruz,Claudia M; Gutiérrez-Guzmán,Nelson.
We assessed the degree of freshness of gutted and ungutted red tilapia (Oreochromis ssp) using physicochemical and microbiological analyses of samples of gutted red tilapia on days 0, 3, 5, 8, 11, 14 and 17 and of ungutted red tilapia on days 0, 3, 6, 9, 11, 14 and 16. The total sample size was five fish stored in ice at temperatures between 0 and 4 °C. Different methods were used to study the degree of freshness: pH, water holding capacity (WHC) and microbiological analysis (aerobic mesophilic count). Once we obtained the results, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine possible correlations between the values of deterioration and the data obtained by other analysis methods. The one-way ANOVA showed that statistically significant...
