Food Security, Food Chains and Bioenergy Challenges for a Sustainable Development Environment AgEcon
Carvalho, Pacheco de; Bernardo, M.T..
Food system dynamics worldwide are under a new paradigm. Energy supply based on renewable natural resources is now a necessary solution, where agri-business can play an important role, and food systems will have to interact worldwide with new competitors for land and agriculture activity. The argument in this paper is based on the evidence that innovation and technology changes in food production (agricultural production) can offer a sustainable supply of grain and biomass, when demand behaviour is consistent and very flexible (demand elasticity above 1). The main argument is based on the hypothesis that demand behaviour is the main driver in food systems, which can be observed looking at technical and technological changes in production systems in Europe...

Community Supported Agriculture in the Urban Fringe: Empirical Evidence for Project Feasibility in the Metropolitan Area of Naples (Italy) AgEcon
Cicia, Gianni; Colantuoni, Francesca; Del Giudice, Teresa; Pascucci, Stefano.
Urbanisation of city-side areas effects on farm land use and organisation are analysed in this study with the objective of seeking the most effective way to implement a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) scheme. Specifically, we used a theoretical framework to describe and assess the relationships between urbanization and farm-styles in the city belt. Our analysis is based on a case study in the protected area of the Campi Flegrei Regional Park situated in the north-western part of the Neapolitan metropolitan area, which is a peri-urban rural area with severe environmental management problems. Our results from the empirical analysis allowed us to distinguish the farms of the area into three behavioural-social groups on the basis of specific features, in...

Produção para Autoconsumo entre Agricultores Familiares da Comunidade de Jacarezinho – Encantado/RS AgEcon
Tonezer, Crsitiane; Santos, Francis Dos; Rambo, Anelise Graciele.
This study intends to analyse the production for self-consumption of family agriculturists of the community of...

Dietary Effects of Menu Choices in the National School Lunch Program AgEcon
Ishdorj, Ariun; Crepinsek, Mary Kay; Jensen, Helen H..
Childhood and adolescence are unique periods of growth and development. In addition to maturing physically, children begin to make independent choices about when, where, and what they eat. Good nutrition during childhood and adolescence plays a key role in assuring adequate growth and development, preventing the long-term risk of chronic disease, and enhancing health and well-being. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) school meal programs play an important role in children’s diets and can thus influence their weight status and health. On average, children obtain more than one third of their daily energy intake from meals consumed at school during the school year (Briefel et al 2009). The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is one of the largest...

Consumer WTP for Blueberry Attributes: A Hierarchical Bayesian Approach in the WTP Space AgEcon
Shi, Lijia; House, Lisa; Gao, Zhifeng.
A stated preference experiment is conducted to elicit consumer WTPs for various blueberry attributes. The mixed logit model is employed to account for consumer heterogeneity. The model is set up in the WTP space where the distributions of WTPs are directly specified. Considering the high diversity of consumer perception and the remarkable benefits from differential marketing, we apply the hierarchical Bayesian approach and the discussion is based on the individual level WTP estimates. The results show that “local produced” attribute is preferred over simply “produced in the U.S.” by most respondents. By contrast, less than 50% of the respondents are willing to pay premium for organic blueberries. In addition, hardly any relationship between demographics...

BALANCING FOOD SAFETY AND RISK: DO DRUG RESIDUE LIMITS AFFECT INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN BEEF? AgEcon
Wilson, John S.; Otsuki, Tsunehiro; Majumdar, Baishali.
There have been a number of high profile food safety disputes in trade over the past decade. These include the widely publicized dispute at the World Trade Organization between the U.S. and EU over hormone treated beef. Consumers in some industrialized countries have also expressed concern over the health implications of consuming beef produced with antibiotics and other artificial supplements. Developing countries are affected in a significant way in both how disputes are settled, as well as the balance between risk and safety reflected in how standards are set. This paper examines the impact of drug residue standards on trade in beef and trade affect of setting harmonized international standards. We find that if international standards set by Codex...

Consumers' Perception of Sustainably Produced Food: The case of local and organic production technologies AgEcon
Whorton, Carly S.; Amanor-Boadu, Vincent.
This paper identifies ways to improve on the current literature regarding sustainable production technologies, in this case, organic and local products. A survey method is used to examine organic and local markets in place of a single product to gain a better understanding of consumers‟ response to these products, their reactions to price differences of these products, and how their preferences change based on changing income level and prices. The sample was drawn from a commercial database and was attempted to be made random across the U.S. population. In place of results, hypotheses are presented as data were late coming back.

NUTRITION LABELING: DOES THE MESSAGE REACH THE CONSUMER? AgEcon
Teisl, Mario F.; Levy, Alan S.; Bockstael, Nancy E..
Nutrition labeling does not necessarily lead to healthier diets. Consumers may substitute away from unhealthy products in food categories where differences in other quality characteristics (e.g., taste) are relatively small and towards unhealthy products in categories where differences may be large. The effects are largest among less-educated and younger individuals.

Networks in Rural Economy: Valorising Endogenous and Exogenous Drivers of Innovation AgEcon
Vermeire, Bert; Gellynck, Xavier; De Steur, Hans; Viaene, Jacques.
Historically, perspectives on the economic development of rural regions have been dominated by the modernization model of agriculture (van der Ploeg and Van Dijk, 1995). During the last decades this model has increasingly been abandoned in an effort to reduce the negative outcomes associated with that model, driven by the changing concerns of consumers and society in response to these outcomes (van der Ploeg, 1999, Weatherell et al., 2003). Parallel to this socioeconomic evolution the theoretical perspectives on rural development altered. Discourses about the evolution of rural development describe the succession of an exogenous, modernist model of rural development by an endogenous model and in the end leading to an integrated model of rural development,...

Analysis of Factors Influencing Adoption of Dairy Technologies In Western Kenya AgEcon
Makokha, Stella Nabwile; Karugia, Joseph Thuo; Staal, Steven J.; Oluoch-Kosura, Willis.
Indicators of poverty in western Kenya show high poverty levels. The area has low dairy development yet the potential for dairy development is quite high. Dairy farming has the potential to reduce poverty by increasing incomes and reducing unemployment. This paper reports factor interrelationships in dairy adoption with a view to understanding factors that influence adoption. The binary probit model was used to analyse data from 1575 households. Contrary to findings from similar studies elsewhere, some factors had a negative association with adoption, thus unfolding a unique adoption process. The association between the factor interactive affects and technology adoption highlighted the importance of exploring factor interrelationships. The widely held...

The Direct Economic Effects of Stricter Standards Towards the Protection of Human and Animal Health in Swine Sector AgEcon
Mora, Cristina; Menozzi, Davide.
The objective of this study is to present the results of a research carried out on a group of farms involved in pig fattening (48 farms) to evaluate the economic impact of implementing human and animal health regulation. The five types considered in any case represent 90-95% of the total health costs, there are therefore economies of scale and considering the types of expenditure, veterinary medicines have a strong incidence on fattening farms, together with medicated feed for consumption on the farm and the control of Aujeszky's disease. The overall health costs have on average reached the 2% of total costs and the same value of the net income.

Advertising, Structural Change, and U.S. Non-Alcoholic Drink Demand AgEcon
Xiao, Hui; Kinnucan, Henry W.; Kaiser, Harry M..
The dominant pattern in U.S. non-alcoholic drink: consumption over the past 25 years has been a steady increase in per capita soft-drink: consumption, largely at the expense of coffee (and to a lesser extent) milk consumption. Our findings suggest that the major factor governing this pattern is structural change. Specifically, trend was found to be statistically significant in three of the four equations estimated in the Rotterdam system. Moreover, the estimated trend-related changes in per capita consumption (-1.0 percent per year for milk, 2. 1 percent for soft drinks, and 3.7 percent for coffee and tea) leave at most 28 percent ofthe observed quantity variation for 1990-1994 to be accounted for by changes in relative prices, income, and advertising....

Do School Nutrition Programs Influence Child Weight? A Treatment Effect Analysis AgEcon
Capogrossi, Kristen; You, Wen.
Schools have significant influence on children’s health making health interventions targeting schools more likely to succeed such as the School Breakfast Program (SBP) and National School Lunch Program (NSLP). A key question that this literature currently concentrates on is to what extent do SBP and/or NSLP directly contribute to the observed outcome of child weight? This study assesses the impact by analyzing multiple simultaneous treatments on weight as the child progresses from 1st to 8th grade while acknowledging self-selection into the programs. Specifically, we utilize Average Treatment Effect on the Treated (ATT) and Difference-in-Differences (DID) methodologies to address the issue. We find that participating in only NSLP decreases the probability...
