The effect of <i>Artemia</i> -supplementation of dry foods on growth and survival of <i>Clarias gariepinus</i> (Burchell 1822) larvae OMA
Van Damme, P.; Pacolet, W.; Sulem Yong, S.; Fremaut, D.; Ollevier, F.P..
Two experiments were performed in order to determine the effect of supplementation of dry foods with live <i>Artemia</i> nauplii on the growth, survival, rate of cannibalism, and length-weight relationships of <i>Clarias gariepinus</i> larvae. It was found that <i>Artemia</i> -supplementation resulted in a significantly higher growth rate. The "condition", expressed as a length-weight relationship, was likewise altered after supplementation. The survival and rate of cannibalism were not influenced by supplementation. <i>Artemia</i> -supplementation of dry foods was compared with other approaches which are based on the concept of the 'adaptation weight'.

The life cycle of <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> OMA
De Charleroy, D.; Grisez, L.; Thomas, K.; Belpaire, C.; Ollevier, F.P..
For some years now the parasitic swim bladder nematode <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> of the European eel <i>Anguilla anguilla</i> L., has been reported from several European countries. The entire life history of this parasite has recently been elucidated in our laboratory. Young larvae leave the swim bladder of the host via the pneumatic duct and reach the water through the digestive tract. They are ingested by small copepods (Cyclopoida), which act as intermediate hosts. Larvae remain in the hemocoel until the copepods are eaten by the final host, the European eel. Larvae penetrate through the intestinal wall and reach the swim bladder where they develop into adults. When infected copepods are eaten by other small fish, such as carp...

Paratenic hosts of the swimbladder nematode <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> OMA
Thomas, B.; Ollevier, F.P..
The host specificity and population dynamics of <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> in a number of paratenic hosts were investigated. Various freshwater fish species were sampled monthly (March 1990 to March 1991) from the Kolenhaven (Albertcanal, Genk, Belgium) and examined for L3-larvae of <i>Anguillicola crassus</i>. Sixteen species were found to be infected: all the physoclist species examined (<i>Gymnocephalus cernua, Lepomis gibbosus, Ictalurus nebulosus, Stizostedion lucioperca, Gasterosteus aculeatus, Oreochromis niloticus</i> and <i>Perca fluviatilis</i>) and those physostome species of which a sufficient number could be examined to detect the infection (<i>Gobio gobio, Leuciscus...

Gonadal development and reproductive period of the characin Astyanax aff. bimaculatus (Characiformes: Characidae) in a tropical reservoir in southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Araújo,Francisco G.; Nascimento,Aparecida A.; Gomes,Iracema D.; Sales,Armando; Oliveira,Beatriz A. Chagas de.
ABSTRACT The gonadal development of the characin Astyanax aff. bimaculatus from Funil Reservoir, an impoundment in the middle reaches of the Paraiba do Sul River in southeastern Brazil was analysed through histological, histochemical and histometric techniques, and the spawning season was determined. Unbalanced sex ratio was found, with females outnumbering and reaching larger sizes than males. The following stages of oogenic cell development were identified for females: primary growth, pre-vitellogenic (cortical alveolar) and vitellogenic. In males, the following stages were determined: spermatogonia primary and secondary, spermatocyte primary and secondary, spermatid and spermatozoa. The spawning occurs most of the year, peaking in January-February, as...

Ecomorphology of Astyanax species in streams with different substrates Rev. Bras. Zool.
Souza,Marcela A.; Fagundes,Daniela C.; Leal,Cecília G.; Pompeu,Paulo S..
In the present study, we assessed the ecomorphology of two species of Astyanax in streams with different substrates found in the Rio São Francisco Basin. The dominant substrate of each stream was defined as either "fine" (0 to 2 mm), "gravel" (2 to 250 mm), "rock" (> 250 mm), or "leaf bank". We analyzed a total of 22 ecomorphological attributes of Astyanax intermedius Eigenmann, 1908 (127 individuals) and Astyanax rivularis (Lütken, 1875) (238 individuals) adults. We detected significant ecomorphological differences between the populations of A. rivularis and A. intermedius from habitats with different types of substrates. However, the two species did not show the same morphological differences depending on the type of substrate. These results confirmed...

Eiras,Jorge C.; Monteiro,Cassandra M.; Brasil-Sato,Marilia C..
Myxobolus franciscoi sp. nov. (Myxozoa: Myxosporea: Myxobolidae) is described from the "curimatá-pacú" fish, Prochilodus argenteus Spix &amp; Agassiz, 1829 (Actinopterygii: Prochilodontidae) from the Upper São Francisco River, Brazil. This parasite forms whitish plasmodia (about 1 x 1 mm) that develop in the connective tissue of fins. The spores are more or less round in frontal view and ellipsoidal in lateral view, measuring 6.4 (6.0-6.9) µm in length, by 6.0 (5.8-6.4) µm in width and 3.2 µm in thickness. The polar capsules are very small, measuring about 2 µm in length by 1.5 µm in width and ending in a tapered anterior neck. The polar filament makes three turns in a plane at right angles with the longitudinal axis of the spore. Thorough comparisons...

Ultrastructure (SEM) of the gills of Prochilodus Scrofa Steindachner (Pisces, Teleostei) Zoologia
Eiras-Stofella,Daura Regina; Charvet-Almeida,Patricia.
Gills arches of the freshwater fish Prochilodus scrofa Steindachner, 1881 (Lt= 8.0-12.4cm) were removed to be analyzed in a scanning electron microscope. The morphology of the superficial structures of the gill filaments and pharyngeal region of the gills arches was discussed and related to their functional aspects. A great quantity of mucous secretory cells and of microridges, along with the pavement cell surface of the primary lamellae and branchial pharyngeal region, indicate the existence of a protection strategy of the respiratory lamellae. The chloride cells are abundant, specially on the distal portion of the primary lamellae, and bring out the osmo regulatory capacity of this species. This fish seems not to be a filtering one according to: its...

Diet and ecomorphology of Leporinus reticulatus (Characiformes: Anostomidae) from the upper Rio Juruena, MT, Brazil: ontogenetic shifts related to the feeding ecology Acta Amazonica
MACHADO-EVANGELISTA,Mariana; ESGUÍCERO,André Luiz Henríques; ARCIFA,Marlene Sofia; PEREIRA,Thiago Nilton Alves.
The conservation of diverse and well-distributed fish taxa, as the genus Leporinus, relies intrinsically on the knowledge of the ecological attributes of its representatives. Aiming to increase this knowledge, studies on diet and ecomorphology are ideal to provide important information about species ecology. Thus, this study aimed to analyze aspects of feeding ecology of L. reticulatus, from the upper Rio Juruena, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The diet of specimens in different ontogenetic stages was compared, as well as their teeth morphology and ecomorphological attributes. Leporinus reticulatus presented omnivorous diet, with higher consumption of invertebrates by smaller specimens (younger ones), and gradual introduction of plant items in larger specimens...

OLIVEIRA,Marcos Sidney Brito; SILVA,Luís Maurício Abdon; PRESTES,Luiza; TAVARES-DIAS,Marcos.
ABSTRACT Length and weight data are useful in fisheries management and standard results of fish monitoring programs. Length-weight relationship (LWR) is used for estimating the weight corresponding to a given length, and the condition factor is used to compare the body condition, fatness or health of fish populations. This study aimed to estimate the LWR and the condition factor for 12 freshwater fish species from the Igarapé Fortaleza basin, a tributary of the Amazonas River system in the State of Amapá, eastern Amazon (Brazil). The coefficient of determination, the allometric condition factor and the allometric coefficient varied among species, and were compared with populations elsewhere. In 83.3% of the species, the allometric coefficient remained...
