Upland rice yield as affected by Brachiaria coverage management AGRIAMBI
Nascente,Adriano S.; Stone,Luís F.; Guimarães,Cleber M..
An important point in no-tillage system is the time between cover crop glyphosate desiccation and rice sowing. This study aimed to verify the effect of Brachiaria ruziziensis management time before rice sowing on rice yield and its components. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions and consisted of four types of B. ruziziensis management: with Brachiaria and with herbicide (WBWH), without Brachiaria shoots and with herbicide (NBWH), without Brachiaria shoots and without herbicide (NBNH), and with Brachiaria and without herbicide (WBNH), at four times: 30, 20, 10, and 0 days, preceding the rice sowing. The amount of B. ruziziensis dry matter increased as the management was done closer to the rice sowing date. The WBWH and WBNH managements...

Detection of adventitious presence of genetically modified seeds in lots of non transgenic soybean Rev. bras. sementes
Pádua,Gilda Pizzolante de; Jesus,Adriana Madeira Santos; Fronza,Vanoli; Arantes,Neylson Eustáquio; Zito,Roberto Kazuhiko.
The difficulty on identifying, lack of segregation systems and absence of suitable standards for coexistence of non trangenic and transgenic soybean are contributing for contaminations that occur during productive system. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of two methods for detecting mixtures of seeds genetically modified (GM) into samples of non-GM soybean, in a way that seed lots can be assessed within the standards established by seed legislation. Two sizes of soybean samples (200 and 400 seeds), cv. BRSMG 810C (non-GM) and BRSMG 850GRR (GM), were assessed with four contamination levels (addition of GM seeds, for obtaining 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% contamination), and two detection methods: immunoassay of lateral flux (ILF) and...

Toothpick test: a methodology for the detection of RR soybean plants1 Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Fabiana Mota da; Unêda-Trevisoli,Sandra Helena; Villela,Otávia Tiago; Perecin,Dilermando; Mauro,Antonio Orlando Di.
Due to the large increase in the area cultivated with genetically modified soybean in Brazil, it has become necessary to determine methods that are fast and efficient for detecting these cultivars. The aim of this work was to test the efficiency of the toothpick method in the detection of RR soybean plants, as well as to distinguish between cultivars, for sensitivity caused by herbicide. Ten transgenic soybean cultivars, resistant to the active ingredient glyphosate, and ten conventional soybean cultivars were used. Toothpicks soaked in glyphosate were applied to all the plants at stage V6 and evaluations were made at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 days after application (DAA). The effects of the glyphosate on the cultivars, and the symptoms of phytotoxicity caused in...

Comportamento ambiental do glifosato Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
Moraes, P. V.D.; Rossi, P..
The development of agriculture has increased the need for herbicides.  However, some changes have favored the use of glyphosate, such as the advent of transgenic crops and aspects related to toxicology, ecotoxicology, ease of handling, effectiveness of control and, especially, the cost-benefit. This review aims to briefly describe the behavior of glyphosate when present in the environment. The activity of both glyphosate and its metabolites may directly or indirectly affect soil organisms and water.  Although the use of glyphosate has increased in recent years, more detailed studies  of this herbicide under different environmental conditions are important for correct use, minimizing possible environmental damage in case of indiscriminate use of this product.

Droplet deposition during spray and leaf pH in aquatic weed control Scientia Agricola
Costa,Neumárcio Vilanova da; Martins,Dagoberto; Rodella,Roberto Antonio; Costa,Lívia Duarte Neves de Camargo da.
The morphological diversity of leaf surface and structures such as trichomes, stomata, cuticle, and waxes that exists among plant species can have great influence on the adherence and deposition of spray droplets, as well as on herbicide absorption. The aim of this research was to study leaf pH and to evaluate wetting areas after applications of solution surfactants on the following aquatic weeds: Enhydra anagallis, Eichhornia crassipes, Heteranthera reniformis, and Typha subulata. The aquatic weeds were grown in reservoirs containing water under open air conditions and their leaf tissues were collected when the plants reached full development (before flowering). The mean leaf pH varied between 5.50 and 7.50; E. anagallis should be pointed out for...

Identification of geneticaly modified soybean seeds resistant to glyphosate Scientia Agricola
Tillmann,Maria Ângela André; West,Shirlie.
Advances in genetic engineering permit the modification of plants to be tolerant to certain herbicides that are usually not selective. For practical and commercial purposes, it is important to be able to detect the presence or absence of these traits in genotypes. The objective of this research was to develop a procedure for identifying genetically modified soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) with resistance to the herbicide glyphosate. Two studies were conducted based on germination test. In the first study, soybean seeds were pre-imbibed in paper towel with the herbicide solutions, then transferred to moist paper towel for the germination test. In the second study, seeds were placed directly in herbicide solutions in plastic cups and tested for germination...

Management techniques for the control of Melinis minutiflora P. Beauv. (molasses grass): ten years of research on an invasive grass species in the Brazilian Cerrado Acta Botanica
Martins,Carlos Romero; Hay,John Du Vall; Scaléa,Marcio; Malaquias,Juaci Vitória.
ABSTRACT The invasion of exotic species is considered to be a major threat to the preservation of biodiversity. In the Parque Nacional de Brasília (National Park of Brasília), the invasive Melinis minutiflora (molasses grass) occupies more than 10 % of the area of the park. The present, long-term, study compared two treatments of exposure to molasses grass: 1) fire and 2) integrated management (fire + herbicide sprays + manual removal). The aerial biomass of molasses grass in the experimental area initially represented ca. 55 % of the total aerial biomass, a percentage that apparently did not influence native plant species richness at this site. Fire alone was not sufficient to control molasses grass, which attained its pre-treatment biomass values after...

Multiple resistance of Conyza sumatrensis to three mechanisms of action of herbicides Agronomy
Albrecht, Alfredo Junior Paiola; Pereira, Vinicius Gabriel Caneppele; Souza, Cristian Natalino Zanfrilli de; Zobiole, Luiz Henrique Saes; Albrecht, Leandro Paiola; Adegas, Fernando Storniolo.
Fleabane (Conyza spp.) is an important weed in grain production systems and is currently one of the most problematic weeds in Brazil. An important factor related to weeds such as fleabane is the characteristic of herbicide-resistant biotypes developed under selection pressure, with multiple resistance previously detected for Conyza spp. Thus, the aim of this study was to demonstrate the multiple resistance of Conyza sumatrensis to the herbicides paraquat, glyphosate, and chlorimuron. From the F2 seeds of biotypes with suspected resistance to paraquat, glyphosate, and chlorimuron, dose-response greenhouse experiments were conducted for the three herbicides. Herbicides were applied when the plants had 6-8 leaves that were at a height of 8 cm. At the end of...

High temperatures on root growth and lignification of transgenic glyphosate-resistant soybean Agrociencia
Zonetti,P. da Costa; Suzuki,L. Sayuri; Bonini,E. Aparecida; Ferrarese,M. L. Lucio; Ferrarese-Filho,Osvaldo.
Glyphosate resistant transgenic soybean [Glycine max (L.) Mettill] expresses a glyphosate insensitive EPSPS (5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase). This enzyme is involved in important secondary metabolism pathways, including lignin biosynthesis. Thus, differences in lignin content and growth between susceptible (OC14) and glyphosate-resistant soybean may be observed. The objective of this study was to evaluate differences between growth and lignin content of roots in transgenic and OC14 soybean cultivated at high temperatures. Seeds from the OC14 soybean and its transgenic cultivar, CD213RR, were germinated at 25, 27.5, 30 and 32.5 °C. After 3 d, seedlings were cultivated in Hoagland half-strength nutrient solution during 12 h photoperiods and at...

Adsorption of glyphosate on clays and soils from Paraná State: effect of pH and competitive adsorption of phosphate BABT
Cruz,Lútecia Hiera da; Santana,Henrique de; Zaia,Cássia Thaïs Bussamra Vieira; Zaia,Dimas Augusto Morozin.
This work showed that the adsorption of glyphosate (GPS) depends on surface area for clays and amount of clays and CEC for soils. Organic matter (OM) had a secondary role in the adsorption of GPS on soils. The adsorption of GPS on soils from Londrina and Floraí counties and clays (montmorillonite, kaolinite) decreased when pH increased, however, for bentonite clay and soil from Tibagi county was kept constant. For the soils, the competitive adsorption between GPS and phosphate showed that displace of GPS by phosphate was related to the amount of clays, CEC and pH. GPS was not easily displaced by phosphate on the clays. The FT-IR spectra of the soils and clays showed that soil from Londrina resembled kaolinite. Thus, this could explain the results of...

Influence of glyphosate in planktonic and biofilm growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa BJM
Lima,Ilana Schneider; Baumeier,Nicole Carmo; Rosa,Rosimeire Takaki; Campelo,Patrícia Maria Stuelp; Rosa,Edvaldo Antonio Ribeiro.
This study evaluated the impact of different concentrations of glyphosate (Rondup®) on planktonic and biofilm growth of P. aeruginosa. Aerobic and anaerobic cultures of P. aeruginosa ATCC®15442 inoculated in MHB + glyphosate (0.845 ppm, 1.690 ppm, 8.45 ppm, 16.90 ppm, 84.50 ppm, 169 ppm, 845 ppm, and 1690 ppm) and cultured in normoxia and anoxia, following their OD560nm every hour for 24 h. Biofilms of adapted cells were formed in the presence of glyphosate (0.845 to 1690 ppm) in normoxia and anoxia for 36 h. Glyphosate at concentrations higher than 84.5 ppm reduces the cell density of planktonic aerobic cultures (p < 0.05). However, these same concentrations favor the planktonic anaerobic growth (p < 0.05). On the other hand, the herbicide favors a...

Biomarker responses (serum biochemistry) in pregnant female wistar rats and histopathology of their neonates exposed prenatally to pesticides BJPS
Upadhyay,Jyoti; Rana,Mahendra; Bisht,Satpal Singh; Rana,Amita; Durgapal,Sumit; Juyal,Vijay.
Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects on health of pregnant female rats exposed to pesticides glyphosate and carbendazim. Glyphosate is used as herbicide and carbendazim as a fungicide; all are commercially available readily for various agricultural and domestic purposes. The hypothesis tested in this investigation is that pesticide exposure during pregnancy causes changes in biomarker responses like serum glucose level, total protein, total cholesterol, triglycerides, SGOT, SGPT, and billirubin level. Significant changes were observed in all above biomarker responses, when compared with the reference. Histopathology of skin and kidney of rat neonates showed marked damage. Degenerative changes and vacuolization with eroded capsule were...

Glyphosate Mineralization: Effect of Temperature and Soybean and Corn Crop Residues Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Rampoldi,Ariel; Hang,Susana; Barriuso,Enrique.
Mineralization is the main mechanism of dissipation of glyphosate herbicide (N-[phosphonomethyl] glycine) in soil. However, there is scarce information about the mineralization process in strata formed by stubbles in no-tillage systems. The kinetics and rate of mineralization of herbicide in stubbles of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) and corn (Zea mays L.) were investigated. To evaluate the effect of age of crop residues, samples of soybean stubbles were collected immediately after harvest (Soja 1) and four months after harvest (Soja 2). Corn crop residues were collected three months after harvest. Glyphosate evolution and total microbial activity (TMA) were monitored by release of 14C-CO2 and C-CO2 under laboratory conditions with two temperatures, 15 and...

An update on genetically modified crops Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Schwember,Andrés R.
A. R. Schwember. 2008. An update on genetically modified crops. Cien. Inv. Agr. 35(3):231-250. Genetically modified (GM) crops were introduced in the mid 1990s and two principal transgenic technologies currently domínate the market, herbicide-tolerant (HT) crops and insect-resistant crops (Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) crops). HT crops have simplified weed management practices, reduced crop production costs, and have had positive effects on the environment. However, there are concerns about the potential development of weeds resistant to glyphosate, the main herbicide employed with HT crops. A second major worry associated with the use of HT crops is the potential introgression of genes from GM crops into wild relatives (i.e. gene flow) and its potential...
