Amorim,Lincoln da Silva; Torres,Ciro Alexandre Alves; Siqueira,Luiz Gustavo Bruno; Fonseca,Jeferson Ferreira da; Guimarães,José Domingos; Carvalho,Giovanni Ribeiro de; Alves,Nadja Gomes; Oliveira,Margarida Maria Nascimento Figueiredo de.
The effects of feeding urea on embryo production, quality and developmental stages and follicular status at the beginning of a superovulatory treatment of Toggenburg does fed urea diet were investigated in this study. Eighteen females were randomly allocated to receive diets with: no urea (control, n=8), and 2.4% urea dietary dry matter (n=10) UDM. The embryo recovery was performed at day 7 or 8 of estrus cycle by transcervical technique and classified according to quality and developmental stage. The follicular status was determined by transrectal ultrasonography at the first day of FSH injection. The number and quality of embryos were not affected by dietary urea concentration. Embryos from does treated with 2.4% UDM were recovered at advanced stage....

In vitro embryo production in small ruminants R. Bras. Zootec.
Freitas,Vicente José de Figueirêdo; Melo,Luciana Magalhães.
This paper reviews the technical bases of in vitro embryo production in small ruminants with special attention to the results obtained by our group in Northeastern Brazil. The laparoscopic oocyte recovery in hormonally treated live animals indicates a promising future for the application of this technique to genetic improvement program. New molecular biology tools should provide information to improve the efficiency of in vitro maturation. Furthers efforts have to be made to improve the oocyte maturation and to standardize the semen-capacitating process.

Water and small ruminant production R. Bras. Zootec.
Araújo,Gherman Garcia Leal de; Voltolini,Tadeu Vinhas; Chizzotti,Mario Luiz; Turco,Silvia Helena Nogueira; Carvalho,Francisco Fernando Ramos de.
Water is a nutrient of extreme importance for animals and must be considered vital in any rearing phase. The increasing scarcity of this precious natural resource has concerned different segments of society in order to find solutions for rational and sustainable use of this nutrient. Small ruminants, especially sheep and goats, have social and economic importance due to their great ability in adapting to adverse environmental conditions and using water efficiently. Thus, they might be a good alternative to mitigate the climate change effects and to generate foreign exchange and improving life condition in many places of the world. The concept of water productivity for livestock production is relatively new and there are few studies in the world, especially...

Freitas,Vicente J.F.; Serova,Irina A.; Andreeva,Lyudmila E.; Dvoryanchikov,Guennadi A.; Lopes-Jr.,Edilson S.; Teixeira,Dárcio I.A.; Dias,Luciene P.B.; Avelar,Suely R.G.; Moura,Raylene R.; Melo,Luciana M.; Pereira,Alexsandra F.; Cajazeiras,João B.; Andrade,Maria L.L.; Almeida,Karlliely C.; Sousa,Francisco C.; Carvalho,Antonio C.C.; Serov,Oleg L..
In order to produce transgenic goats with hG-CSF, a total of 24 adult Saanen and 48 adult undefined breed goats were used as donors and recipients, respectively. Donors were estrus-synchronized with vaginal sponges and superovulated by a treatment with 200 mg FSH given twice daily in decreasing doses over 3 days starting 48 h before sponge removal. Ovulation was induced by injecting 100µg GnRH 36 h after sponge removal. The recipients also received an estrus synchronization treatment. Donors were mated with fertile Saanen bucks and, approximately 72 h after sponge removal, zygotes were recovered surgically by flushing oviducts. The recovered zygotes were briefly centrifuged to a reliable visualization of the pronuclei. The DNA construct containing hG-CSF...
