Latrouite, Daniel; Morizur, Yvon.
French potters from « Manche ouest » harbours ish edible crab Cancer pagurus in English Channel, Iroise Sea and along north Biscay Bay shelf. Monthly landings of the offshore fleet analysed from logbooks for the period 1985-1987 indicate changes in fishing areas. The mean length of males, the mean length of females and the sex-ratio have been analysed by Principal Component Analysis in 1981-1987 samples. The heterogeneity between catches from different statistical rectangle (30 x 40 nautical miles) was great enough to deduce a way of raising composition from samples to total landings. It also offers the possibility to verifiy and correct declaration on geographical origin of landings.

Kacher, Mohamed.
In the Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea waters, hake is considered as genetically homogeneous and form a unique stock with identical meristic characteristics. The vertebral mean vary from 50,68 (vertebrae) during the first year of life to 51,11 (vertebrae) for adults. 0-group Merluccius display a rapid growth with significant interannual variability (0.71 mm.day-1 in 2001 versus 0.74 mm.day-1 in 2002). The spawning period occurs in April and the average length on the firth January following the hatching is of 17.3 cm (first seasonal check / increment on the sagittal otolith is located about 0.143 cm from the nucleus). At the end of the first year of life the average length is about 24 cm. The longevity of the species is important and growth parameters (L =...

The ecosystems exploited by fishing are complex. The species which are sought after and their distribution rely on numerous processes, in time and space. The understanding of marine ecosystems requires important means and diverse information including those of professional fishing and scientific cruises. At first, scientific fishing cruises aimed to explore marine fauna and discover new halieutic resources. They were in line with the exploration cruises carried out by Prince Albert 1st of Monaco at the end of the XIXth century. However, since the beginning of the 1970s, they have been focusing on the quantification of the resources exploited by fishing. [...] After a series of "Understanding keys" aimed at helping the reader understand the methodology and...

Programme REDRESSE ArchiMer
Mehault, Sonia; Larnaud, Pascal; Rimaud, Thomas; Cuillandre, Jean-pierre; Morandeau, Fabien; Simon, Julien; Vacherot, Jean-philippe.
The landing obligation implemented under the Common Fisheries Policy promoted the development of fishing gear selective devices. The REDRESSE project conducted in the Bay of Biscay was the opportunity for trawl fleets targeting cephalopods, Nephrops and demersal fish to continue to test various selective configurations to reduce their discards levels. The sea trials were carried out onboard of commercial fishing vessels and the experimental tows were sampled by an observer. Most of the selective devices were tested under the twin trawl method, with on one side the gear to be tested and on the other, the standard commercial gear. Other devices were tested with the parallel or alternate haul method. The data obtained were used to describe the catch species...

Answering a need of the Office of Regional Marine Affairs of Brittany, the "fisheries" laboratory of the Ifremer in Lorient provides synthesis elements about the status of the stocks of the main species exploited in the Bay of Biscay, Celtic Sea and Western Ireland in 1983. It provides information about the fishing capacity according to the different jobs done and compares two fleets from South-Brittany: Lorient and Concarneau. This report will have to be completed by the laboratories of Roscoff for activities in North-Brittany and of la Rochelle for activities in the Bay of Biscay.

Duguy, R; Moriniere, P; Le Milinaire, C.
Factors of mortality in marine turtles near the French coast of the Bay of Biscay have been recorded for four species: leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), loggerhead (Caretta caretta), Ridley's turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Most accidental captures of D. coriacea by fishing gears lead to drowning, but the main threat for the species is the ingestion of floating waste. Plastic bags induce occlusion or lesions in the stomach and subsequent death. For C. caretta, L. kempii and C. mydas, the pathology points out mainly two features: external or internal mycosis.

Robert, Alexandre.
Bottom trawling is a widespread fishing activity that covers most of the North-European continental shelves. This activity is likely to alter the benthic habitats, the structure and biodiversity of benthic communities as well as the ecosystem functioning. However, bottom trawling effects vary according to the habitats and, specifically according to the magnitude of the natural sources of disruptions. Consequently, it is difficult to predict the effects of the fishing activity. So, a specific investigation has to be conducted in each fishery in order to characterize the effect of bottom trawling. The Bay of Biscay (BoB) is fished for Norway lobsters and hake. Bottom trawling is one of the most important fishing activities, both economically and regarding to...

This paper deals with the lobsters caught by French fishermen off the "Conquet" (Iroise sea) and off "Ile d'Yeu" (Biscay Bay) on the French atlantic coast. The size at first maturity, defined as the size at which 50 % of female are able to reproduce, is deduced from the analysis of size frequency in landings. It is also shown that more than 50 % of the mature female are spawing each year ; the periods of hatching in the natural environment are also established.

(24 mars 2000 - 23 avril 2002) ArchiMer
Leaute, Jean-pierre.
The European contract PECOSUDE (Small inshore fisheries of the south of Europe) accepted in 2000 (n° 99/024) for 2 years involves French partners (IFREMER, GEOLITTOMER and CEMAGREF), Spanish (AZTI, UPV and IEO) and Portuguese (IPIMAR). The aim is to assess the inshore and estuarian fisheries from Loire estuary to Portugal in view of the negotiations of the PCP in 2002. Three main aspects are considered in the study: fisheries monitoring (data 1999), socio-economy and marketing (data 1999 or 2000). Three main criteria have been established to define the limits of the fishing fleet considered in the study : fishing grounds within the 12 miles zone for the French fleet and the continental shelf and slope (down to 1000 m depth) for northern Spanish and...

The boundary circulation along the European continental slope as transport vehicle for two calanid copepods in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
John, Hc; Mittelstaedt, E; Schulz, K.
The copepod fauna south-west of the British Isles includes a number of species which have their centre of distribution in the subtropical or tropical Atlantic. Among these, some species appear to be faunistically linked with the Iberian continental slope or slope waters even farther south along the NE Atlantic margin. It seems that these species reach their north-eastern range by means of poleward-flowing currents. For example, Calanoides carinatus has deep-living resting stages and ascends to surface waters only during its reproductive period, which is short at northern latitudes. Its main dwelling layers along the west Iberian continental slope cover the poleward-flowing undercurrent and the Mediterranean outflow water underneath. Part of the poleward...
