Tolerance to flooding in five Brachiaria brizantha accessions PAB
Dias-Filho,Moacyr Bernardino.
Some physiological and morphological responses of five Brachiaria brizantha accessions (BRA000591 cultivar Marandu, BRA003441, BRA002844, BRA004308 and BRA004391) were compared for plants grown in pots under flooding and well-drained conditions for 14 days. Flooding caused a significant reduction in leaf dry mass production in all accessions, but, for root biomass, no differences between treatments could be detected in BRA003441 and BRA004391. No adventitious root production was observed in flooded BRA003441; all other accessions produced adventitious roots when flooded. Relative growth rate was reduced by flooding only in BRA000591 and BRA004308. Leaf elongation rate was reduced by flooding in all accessions, however, more severely in BRA003441. Net...

Developing decision-making tools for improving pasture quality on deer farms in New Zealand AgEcon
Stevens, David R.; Woodward, Simon J.R.; Westbrooke, Victoria F.C..
This paper describes the development of a learning package to support improved pasture quality on New Zealand deer farms. The first step has been to determine the specific requirements of deer farmers that will enable them to improve pasture quality decisions on-farm. Decision support software that interprets and demonstrates the impacts of pasture quality and animal physiology on the performance of young growing deer has also been developed. Key themes identified to aid pasture management decision-making included identifying the right pasture quality, management systems to maintain pasture quality and maximising the potential of livestock. This paper reports on the type of knowledge that deer farmers require in the learning package.

Determination of larval instars in Chironomus sancticaroli (Diptera: Chironomidae) using novel head capsule structures Rev. Bras. Zool.
Richardi,Vinicius S.; Rebechi,Débora; Aranha,José M. R.; Navarro-Silva,Mário A..
Determining the age composition of a population is important when conducting ecological, taxonomic and environmental assessments. Morphometric measurements of the head capsule, especially the length and width, are widely used in the identification of insect instars, but alternative ways for determining the age of insects can expand the options for the analysis of field and laboratory populations. This study evaluated the morphometry of the antennae, mandibles, mentum and ventromental plates to discriminate among the four larval instars of Chironomus sancticaroli Strixino & Strixino, 1981. The larvae were reared in the laboratory under constant temperature (25°C) and photoperiod of 12/12 hours for 19 days, with a supply of food. Fifteen larvae were...

Sphagnum magellanicum growth and productivity in Chilean anthropogenic peatlands RChHN
DÍAZ,MARÍA F; TAPIA,CAROLINA; JIMÉNEZ,PATRICIA; BACIGALUPE,LEONARDO.
Sphagnum peatlands are threatened at a global scale, not only by peat extraction, but also by Sphagnum harvesting. In Chile, dry Sphagnum moss is mainly exported for use as substrate for horticulture and orchids. Although the use of Sphagnum within Chile is limited, there are no data about its productivity and growth. These peatlands have a special microtopography with hummocks, hollows and lawns, which vary the distance of moss to the water table level. In these ecosystems, the water table is almost all year near the surface. We measured cumulative and relative growth rates and productivity during approximately one annual cycle in private Sphagnum peatlands that are being yearly harvested for commercial purposes. We evaluated the relationship between...

Nestling development of the tropical screech-owl ( Megascops choliba ): a successful case report from the southwestern Amazon Acta Amazonica
GUILHERME,Edson; SOUZA,Izabele Rodrigues de.
ABSTRACT This study reports a successful reproductive event in Megascops choliba in eastern Acre, northern Brazil. An active M. choliba nest was monitored from the hatching of the eggs to the departure of the nestlings. Once hatched, the nestlings were weighed every two days to verify their weight gain over time. The nestlings remained in the nest for 30 days. The pattern of weight gain was similar to that found in other birds, presenting a rapid increase over the first 15 days, followed by a drastic reduction in the mean growth rate during the second half of the development period. Our observations indicate that the breeding season of M. choliba in southwestern Amazonia is similar as that reported for the species in the northern hemisphere. These are the...

Growth of the tropical zoanthid Palythoa caribaeorum (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) on reefs in northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,JANINE F.; GOMES,PAULA B.; SANTANA,ERIKA C.; SILVA,JOÃO M.; LIMA,ÉRICA P.; SANTOS,ANDRE M.M.; PÉREZ,CARLOS D..
In Brazilian reefs, zoanthids, especially Palythoa caribaeorum are fundamental for structuring the local benthic community. The objective of this study was to determine the growth rate of P. caribaeorum, and to assess the influence of the site (different beaches), season (dry and wet), location (intertidal or infralittoral zones), and human pressure associated with tourism. For one year we monitored the cover of P. caribaeorum in transects and focused on 20 colonies. We cut off a square (100 cm2) from the central part of the colony and monitored the bare area for four months in each season. The average growth rates varied from 0.015 and 0.021 cm.day-1. The rate was homogeneous in all localities, and there was no influence from colony site, location, or...
