Agrometeorological models for 'Valencia' and 'Hamlin' sweet oranges to estimate the number of fruits per plant Scientia Agricola
Paulino,Silvia Elisandra Pasqua; Mourão Filho,Francisco de Assis Alves; Maia,Aline de Holanda Nunes; Avilés,Tatiana Eugenia Cantuarias; Dourado Neto,Durval.
The development of models that allow forecasting yield tendencies is important to all sectors of the citrus industry. This work evaluated the influence of meteorological variables in different phases of the crop cycle in order to propose empirical models to estimate the number of fruits per plant (NFP) of 'Valencia' and 'Hamlin' sweet oranges. NFP sampling data from the citrus juice industry of the State of São Paulo, on the total of 15 harvests (1990/91 to 2004/05), classified into three age classes, and meteorological data of maximum and minimum air temperature and rainfall of Limeira, SP, Brazil, were utilized. Correlation coefficients were initially computed between the number of fruits per plant and each meteorological variable used for water balance...

Population structure and fruit availability of the babassu palm ( Attalea speciosa Mart. ex Spreng) in human-dominated landscapes of the Northeast Region of Brazil Acta Botanica
Campos,Juliana Loureiro Almeida; Albuquerque,Ulysses Paulino; Peroni,Nivaldo; Araújo,Elcida de Lima.
ABSTRACT We studied the population structure and fruit availability of the babassu palm, Attalea speciosa, in three human-dominated landscapes located near a rural community in the region of Araripe, in the Northeast Region of Brazil, that were under intense fruit harvest. Fifty 10 x 10 m plots were randomly established in each of the three landscapes, and all individuals of A. speciosa within the plots were classified as seedlings, juveniles or adults, with the height of all adult individuals being measured. An additional 20 individuals were marked in each landscape, and the number of total bunches, fruits per bunch and bunches per palm tree were recorded. The populations of A. speciosa in the three landscapes exhibited an inverted J-shape plot, but...

Determination of the required force to pick cottonseed from four cotton varieties boll in three different harvesting time CIGR Journal
Azadbakht, Mohsen; Jahanian, Mahshid; Asghari, Ali; Nowrouzieh, Shahram.
The cotton plant contains fruits called capsules or bolls, in which the cotton fiber grows, and after the growth stages, the fibers appear through separating the carpels. This research investigated the required force to pick the cottonseed from four cotton variety   (Golestan, Khorshid, Sajedi, and Kashmar) in three levels of moisture (three harvesting times) and three revolutions (1500, 2500 and 3500 rpm). To measure this force, designed and manufactured a device similar to a spindle cotton picker and using the actual needle of John Deere machine 9920. The bolls were tested in different revolution and moisture levels with the device. The results of experiments showed that the cross-effects of variety on speed, harvesting time on variety and harvesting...

Determination of harvest maturity of D'Agen plums using the chlorophyll absorbance index Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Infante,Rodrigo; Rubio,Pía; Contador,Loreto; Noferini,Massimo; Costa,Guglielmo.
The objective determination of the optimal harvest date for plums intended either for industrial processing or for consumption as fresh fruit is a fundamental concern of the fruit industry. A portable visible/near infrared (Vis/NIR) spectroscopic device was used to sort D'Agen plums harvested around the traditional commercial harvest date. The chlorophyll absorbance index was found to be capable of segregating plums into classes of maturity according to various concentrations of soluble solids and fruit compression strenght values. Fruits with a chlorophyll absorbance index value of less than 1.59 showed no differences in flesh firmness. Plums harvested with chlorophyll absorbance index values of 1.20-1.29 had a fruit compression strenght of 1.25 N and a...

Relationship between fruit maturation stage and physiological quality of physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) seeds Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Laércio Junio da; Dias,Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos; Milagres,Carla do Carmo; Dias,Luiz Antônio dos Santos.
The physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) has great potential for use in biodiesel production due to the high oil content of its seeds. Production of high quality seeds depends upon the appropriate time of harvest. A field experiment was carried out to monitor the maturation process of physic nut seeds and to establish the ideal harvest time of the seeds based on external fruit color. Fruits were collected at different maturation stages based on the external color: green, yellow-green, yellow, yellow-brown and brown. Seeds were extracted manually and, after natural drying, were submitted to the following tests and determinations: moisture content and dry matter, germination, first count seedling emergence, seedling growth, accelerated aging, electrical...

Physiological quality, anatomy and histochemistry during the development of carrot seeds ( Daucus carota L.) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Miranda,Rafaela Marques de; Dias,Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos; Picoli,Edgard Augusto de Toledo; Silva,Patrícia Pereira da; Nascimento,Warley Marcos.
ABSTRACT The adequate time for carrot seed harvest influences its physiological quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate physiological, anatomical and histochemical changes in carrot seeds harvested at different stages of development and to establish the most appropriate harvest time. Secondary umbels were harvested at 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56 and 63 days after anthesis (DAA). For seed anatomical and histochemical characterization, sections were stained with Toluidine blue stain, Xylidine Ponceau, Lugol’s iodine, Sudan Black B and submitted to polarized light. Seed moisture content, seed dry matter, germination, first count, emergence percentage and emergence speed index of seedlings were evaluated. Cultivar Brasília carrot seeds at 14 DAA...
