Single garlic has been used as a traditional medicine for hypercholesterolemia and increasing stamina. The aim of this research was to analyze the effect of single-bulb garlic oil (SGO) extract toward hematology and histopathology liver and kidney in mice. Male mice (strain Balb-C, 12 weeks old, weight of 28±3 g) was treated by SGO for 28 days (once per days) with various doses K- (Normal); K+ (SGO 0.0 mg/kg BW); T1 (SGO 6.25 mg/kg BW); T2 (SGO 12.5 mg/kg BW); T3 (SGO 25.0 mg/kg BW); T4 (SGO 50.0 mg/kg BW). The end of the treated mice was sacrificed. Blood was collected to analyze hematology. Liver and kidney were collected then made microanatomy slide with Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. Parameters of hematology are the levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit,... |

ABSTRACT Linseed hydrogel (LSH) was evaluated by acute toxicity for its potential application in oral drug delivery design. White albino mice and rabbits were divided in four groups (I-IV) and different doses of LSH (1, 2 and 5 g/kg body weight) were given except to the control group (I) that was left untreated. Rabbits were monitored for eye irritation, acute dermal toxicity and primary dermal irritation, whereas, body weight, food and water consumption, hematology and clinical biochemistry, gross necropsy and histopathology of vital organs were scrutinized in mice. LSH was considered safe after eye irritation test as no adverse signs or symptoms were seen in the eye. In dermal toxicity and irritation study, skin of treated rabbits was found normal in... |

Acute erythroid leukemia (AML M6) is a hematopoietic neoplasm frequently described in cats and mice, rarely in other animal species. This report describes a case of AML M6 in a yearling Thoroughbred filly. Clinically the horse presented marked pale mucous membranes and exercise intolerance. In addition, the owner and referring veterinarian reported a 30-day history of progressive weight loss. The CBC revealed severe anemia and leukopenia by neutropenia. Cytology evaluation obtained from bone marrow fine needle aspirates evidenced inversion of the myeloid: erythroid ratio (0.2), with 48% of the nucleated cells corresponding to rubriblasts. In addition to the gross evidence of anemia, necropsy findings consisted of splenomegaly and lymphadenomegaly. The... |

Erythrocyte and leukocyte parameters and total protein (TP) of Brasileiro de Hipismo (BH) and Breton mares were studied during pregnancy. A total of 175 healthy mares, varying from 3 to 13 years old were used. Among the animals, 89 were BH mares (14 non pregnant and 75 pregnant) and 86 Breton mares (11 non pregnant and 75 pregnant). The mares were divided into four groups for each breed: control group (non pregnant mares). group 1 (first period of pregnancy, 25-110 days, n=25), group 2 (second period of pregnancy, 111-210 days, n=25) and group 3 (third period of pregnancy, 211-340 days, n=25). The values for erythrocyte, leukocyte were compared with the obtained total protein. Red blood cells count (RBC), packed cell volume (PCV) and haemoglobin... |

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to evaluate the changes in intestinal tract microbiota, hematological parameters and zootechnical indexes of yellowtail lambaris (Astyanax bimaculatus) fed with different probiotic supply frequencies (Lactobacillus spp.). Lambaris (1,200) were distributed in twelve boxes, divided in three treatments, 100% supply; 25% and 0% (control) of feeds supplemented with probiotic. After 87 days, fish fed with supplemented diet, regardless of frequency (100% and 25%), showed an increase in the total lactic acid bacteria count of 7.99±0.15 log CFU mL-1 and 7.04±1, 29 log UFC mL-¹ respectively, in the intestinal tract and decrease of Pseudomonas spp. in both 100% and 25% (4.09±0.84log UFC mL-1 and 4.00±1.12log UFC mL-1,... |

ABSTRACT: The response of biochemical and hematological parameters were analyzed in dog snapper (Lutjanus jocu) grown in net cages, as well as for the specimens kept in the laboratory during an infestation by Neobenedenia melleni, and after treatment with freshwater bath and injectable application of levamisole. Significant changes were observed in N. melleni parasitized individuals, characterized by increased glucose and lactate levels, as well as a significant fish hematocrit reduction and leukocyte increase. Treatment with freshwater baths, concomitant with injectable levamisole application, showed therapeutic efficacy in several parameters after 14 days of treatment. |

ABSTRACT: Bearded Capuchin or Black-striped Capuchin monkeys (Sapajus lidibinosus) are New World robust capuchin monkeys widely used in medical research. Few data are available concerning hematological reference values for these species, with no studies available from the Northeast region in Brazil. The aim of this study was to determine the hematological reference values for healthy bearded capuchin monkeys and to analyze the influence of sex and age factors. Blood samples were collected from 50 healthy bearded capuchin monkeys housed in captivity. These were analysed for total erythrocyte, hemoglobin, leukocyte and platelet count, packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin... |

Stress is one of the major obstacles in frog culture and can be caused by factors such as inappropriate farming systems; inadequate management among other situations. The objective of the present study was to assess the hemogram, erythrogram and leukogram of bullfrogs (L. catesbeianus) when exposed to stress caused by different types of management: density and handling (manipulation), developed in the laboratory and repeated in the field for the appropriate comparisons in a experimental period of 30 days. The density experiment was conducted with four treatments: 70 animals m-2 (D70); 100 animals m-2 (D100), Control; 150 animals m-2 (D150) and 200 animals m-2 (D200), with 10, 14, 21 and 28 animals/box in the laboratory, respectively. Each treatment was... |
