Residual Activity of [imazapic+imazapyr] Applied to Imidazolinones Resistant Soybean on Cotton in Succession Planta Daninha
MATTE,W.D.; CAVALIERI,S.D.; PEREIRA,C.S.; IKEDA,F.S.; POLTRONIERI,F..
ABSTRACT: In the current scenario of resistance of weeds to glyphosate in grain and fiber production systems, imidazolinone-resistant soybean is shown as an option in the rotation of biotechnology events and herbicide action mechanisms through the application of [imazapic+imazapyr]. However, due to its persistence in the soil, the herbicide may harm the subsequent crop. The objective of this work was to evaluate the residual activity of the herbicide [imazapic+imazapyr] applied in pre-emergence in soybean cultivation on cotton in succession. The experimental design was a randomized block design with five replicates, using seven concentrations (0; 6.25; 12.5; 25; 50; 100 and 200%) of the recommended dosage of the herbicide [imazapic+imazapyr] ([78,75+26,25]...

Rice seedling and plant development as affected by increasing rates of penoxsulam under controlled environments Planta Daninha
Concenço,G.; Lopes,N.F.; Moraes,D.M.; Andres,A.; Melo,P.T.B.S..
Rice is a major staple in many countries. Weed control is one of the factors limiting higher rice yield. ALS (acetolactate synthase)-inhibiting herbicides are desirable weed control herbicides because of their high efficacy, low toxicity to mammalians, and low rates used. An important herbicide characteristic is high selectivity to the crop, since it facilitates fast crop establishment and greater crop advantage over the weeds. The objectives of this work were to study the effects of increasing rates of the ALS-inhibiting herbicide penoxsulam on seed integrity and germination, and seedling and plant development of rice cv. BRS Pelota under controlled laboratory and greenhouse conditions. The results showed that penoxsulam affected rice germination and...

How glyphosate may affect transgenic soybean in different soil and phosphorus levels Planta Daninha
Casonatto,M.S.; Arantes,S.A.C.M.; Rieger E.A.,; Andrade,E.A..
The technology that employs genetic modifications brought a significant increase in the utilization of glyphosate. Transgenic soybean has been suffering injury, even though it possesses a resistance mechanism to glyphosate. Currently, there are only a few studies on the dynamics of glyphosate in transgenic soybean planted in soils with different textures interacting with phosphorus concentrations. This study focused on assessing the effects of glyphosate in transgenic soybean plants on different types of soil and at different phosphorus levels. The experimental design was completely randomized, in factorial design: 2 x 6 x 3, that being 2 soil types, 6 doses of glyphosate and 3 levels of phosphorus, and four replications. Plants were cultivated for thirty...

Allelopathic effects of Eucalyptus citriodora on amaryllis and associated grassy weed Planta Daninha
El-Rokiek,K.G; Eid,R.A.
A Petri dish assay was carried out for screening different concentrations of aqueous extracts of fresh and dry leaves of Eucalyptus citriodora on germination and seedling growth of wild oat weed (Avena fatua). Seed germination, root and shoot length of wild oat exhibited different degrees of inhibition according to the concentration of the aqueous extract. Maximum inhibitions of germination percentage, root and shoot length were recorded when using 25% fresh leaf extract. Based on this preliminary work (Petri dish assay), studies were conducted under greenhouse conditions at the National Research Center, Egypt, in the two winter seasons of 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 to evaluate the effects of foliar and soil treatments of aqueous extracts of Eucalyptus...

Molecular Basis for Resistance to Fluazifop-P-Butyl in Itchgrass (Rottboellia cochinchinensis) from Costa Rica Planta Daninha
CASTILLO-MATAMOROS,R.; BRENES-ANGULO,A.; HERRERA-MURILLO,F.; GÓMEZ ALPÍZAR.,L..
Rottboellia cochinchinensis is an annual grass weed species known as itchgrass, or "caminadora" in America´s Spanish speaking countries, and has become a major and troublesome weed in several crops. The application of fluazifop-P-butyl at recommended rates (125 g a.i. ha-1) was observed to be failing to control itchgrass in a field in San José, Upala county, Alajuela province, Costa Rica. Plants from the putative resistant R. cochinchinensis population survived fluazifop-P-butyl when treated with 250 g a.i. ha-1 (2X label rate) at the three- to four-leaf stage under greenhouse conditions. PCR amplification and sequencing of partial carboxyl transferase domain (CT) of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) gene were used to determine the molecular mechanism of...

Nitrogen availability and glyphosate hormesis on white oat Planta Daninha
R.O. Silva,Diecson; A. Silva,Álvaro A.; D. Novello,Bruna; Rieder,Eduardo; M. Aguiar,Adalin C.; J. Basso,Claudir.
Abstract Background: The effect of low rates of glyphosate has been widely studied in several crops. Low nitrogen stress reduces carbohydrate synthesis and we hypothesize that hormesis from glyphosate occurs at low nitrogen availability. Objective: To evaluate the effects of glyphosate hormesis at different levels of nitrogen on the growth and yield of white oat. Methods: A two-factor factorial (2x7) was conducted in field testing at nitrogen levels (50 and 90 kg ha-1) and low rates of glyphosate rates (0 - 180 g a.e. ha-1). The glyphosate was applied at the second node already formed. The growth and yield were evaluated. Results: Plant height was not affected by the nitrogen levels. A low rate of glyphosate induced a plant height increase up of...

Use of Sunflower and Soybean as Bioindicators to Detect Atrazine Residues in Soils Planta Daninha
NOVAIS,J.; MENDES,K.F.; INOUE,M.H.; MACIEL,C.D.G.; HELVIG,E.O.; STANIESKI,C.M..
ABSTRACT: Atrazine is selective for maize, sugarcane and sorghum and may interfere with successor crops such as sunflower and soybean. Despite this problem, there are few studies about the residual effect of this herbicide in these crops. Thus, the objective of the research was to evaluate the residual effect of atrazine through bioavailability of the herbicide in sandy and clayey soils, using soybean and sunflower as bioindicators. The design was completely randomized with four replications and a 2 × 7 + 1 factorial scheme, that is, two doses (2,000 and 2,500 g ha-1), seven application times (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 days between application (DBA) of herbicide and bioindicator sowing) and one control without application. A Modified phosphate-carrier protein theory is proposed as a non-target site mechanism For glyphosate resistance in weeds Planta Daninha
Roso,A.C.; Vidal,R.A..
Glyphosate is an herbicide that inhibits the enzyme 5-enolpyruvyl-shikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPs) (EC 2.5.1.19). EPSPs is the sixth enzyme of the shikimate pathway, by which plants synthesize the aromatic amino acids phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan and many compounds used in secondary metabolism pathways. About fifteen years ago it was hypothesized that it was unlikely weeds would evolve resistance to this herbicide because of the limited degree of glyphosate metabolism observed in plants, the low resistance level attained to EPSPs gene overexpression, and because of the lower fitness in plants with an altered EPSPs enzyme. However, today 20 weed species have been described with glyphosate resistant biotypes that are found in all five...

INHERITANCE OF RESISTANCE TO PROTOPORPHYRINOGEN OXIDASE INHIBITOR HERBICIDES IN WILD POINSETTIA Planta Daninha
BRUSAMARELLO,A.P.; OLIVEIRA,P.H.; TREZZI,M.M.; XAVIER,E.; DALOSTO,E.D..
ABSTRACT Weed resistance to herbicides is a major global problem for agriculture. In recent years, the increased use of herbicides, without proper planning, has led to a large increase in the number of cases of weed biotypes that are resistant to one or more herbicide mechanism of action. Wild poinsettia biotypes (Euphorbia heterophylla), discovered in the State of Paraná, with resistance to herbicides that inhibit protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PROTOX) and acetolactate synthase (ALS), are the first case to exhibit multiple resistance in Brazil. This study analyzed the genetic inheritance of PROTOX inhibiting herbicide resistance in E. heterophylla. Crosses were conducted between biotypes that were susceptible (female parent) and those carrying multiple...

Growth inhibitors in turfgrass Planta Daninha
March,S.R.; Martins,D.; McElroy,J.S..
Well-maintained lawns are comfortable and safe places for leisure activities and sports practice, and they also bring environmental benefits; for example, they reduce soil exposure to erosion and releases atmospheric CO2, thus reducing the greenhouse effect. However, regardless of the purpose of use or the choice of the plant species to form the lawn, the highest costs involve cutting that is needed to keep the turfgrass at its appropriate height. Successive lawn cutting operations are necessary basically because of the vegetative and reproductive growth of turfgrass which, in Brazil, occurs mainly from October to March. Expenditures with successive mechanical cuttings have fostered the search of alternative procedures to keep lawn plants at appropriate...
