A Comparative Study of Fixatives for Axolotl Blastema Tissue International Journal of Morphology
Keskin,Ilknur; Yildirim,Berna; Kolbasi,Bircan; Öztürk,Gürkan; Demircan,Turan.
Regeneration is defined as tissue renewal and functional restoration process of the damaged parts of the body after an injury. Ambystoma mexicanum, commonly named the Axolotl, is one of the unique vertebrates, which has a remarkable ability to regenerate their extremities following the amputation. Although the process of regeneration includes several periods, it can be divided into two main phases; blastema formation and dedifferentiation. In the couple of hours following the amputation, wound closure occurs by migration of epithelial cells around the amputation site followed by macrophage infiltration and dedifferentiation of cells to turn into stem cells. Accumulated stem cells form a very authentic tissue type called blastema, which is crucial for...

Characteristics of the Gustatory Organs on the Tongue of the Chinese Fire-bellied Newt (Cynops orientalis): Light and Scanning Electron Microscopy Study International Journal of Morphology
Xie,Zhaohui; Li,Jingting; Cheng,Pu.
The dorsal surface of the tongue gustatory organs of Chinese fire-bellied newt (Cynops orientalis) was observed by employing the light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results revealed that the rostral and median part of the tongue presents a round apex and covered by taste disks (TDs). They are usually roundish or ellipsoidal in shape and are 20-35 mm in diameter. The many openings of the lingual glands are 4-8 mm in diameter exist in the lateral border or median part of lingual body. The gustatory organs on the tongue did not differed form those presented in other species in Caudates. These may indicate the functions of gustatory organs on the tongue related to their life habit.

Microscopic Anatomy of the Lower Respiratory System of the African Giant Pouched Rat (Cricetomys gambianus, Waterhouse 1840) International Journal of Morphology
Ibe,C. S; Onyeanusi,B. I; Salami,S. O; Nzalak,J. O.
A qualitative and quantitative study, by light microscopy, was undertaken on the lower respiratory system of the African Giant pouched rat. Specifically, the trachea, bronchi and lungs were stained with Haematoxylin and eosin, Alcian blue at a pH of 2.5 and Periodic Acid-Schiff stains. Three cell types were identified in saggital sections of the trachea: the ciliated cells, basal cells and mucous cells. Fibers of the trachealis muscles in the laminar propria separated the underlying cartilages from the basal cells. Mucous cells were visible only in the membranous portion of the trachea and they were predominant in the rostral and caudal portion of the trachea. Lobar bronchi consisted of cuboidal epithelium and a layer of one or two smooth muscle cells and...

HISTOLOGY OF THE JAW DEFORMATION IN SALMON OF SOUTHERN CHILE International Journal of Morphology
Venegas,Felipe; Montiel,Enrique; Forno,Pablo; Rojas,Mariana.
In adult salmon of the sea centres in southern Chile, a jaw deformation (JD) has been identified. It affects the dental and hyomandibular bones, which bend ventrally up to 90° of their normal position. The deformation affects also the dental articular bone. This pathology is related to weight loss and increased mortality of the salmons. It was empirically postulated that a probable cause for this anomaly was food from vegetal origin in the diet of the fishes (which are carnivores) Therefore, the present work aims at comparing the biostructure of jaw bone of salmons fed either with vegetal (soja and gluten) formulation or animal formulation, mostly fish powder. Fifty specimens were analyzed from Puerto Montt, 35 having JD and 15 normal control....

Entrapment of the Sural Nerve on Gastrocnemius Muscle: Histological Analysis International Journal of Morphology
De-Paula,Rafael C; Felix,Bruno; Bezerra,Ewerton C; Rodrigues,Mauro R; Fernandes,Rodrigo M. P; Babinski,Marcio A.
Anatomical variations in the formation of the sural nerve are common, although the topographical localization of this nerve is constant. In this report, we describe the histological analysis of anomalous course of the medial sural cutaneous nerve which descended through the gastrocnemius via a tunnel formed within the muscle and fascia. This anatomical curiosity are clinically important when evaluating sensory axonal loss in distal axonal neuropathies since sural nerve mononeuropathy is less likely to occur.

Postnatal Development of Testis in Gaddi Goat (Capra hircus) International Journal of Morphology
Archana,P; Katiyar,R. S; Sharma,D. N; Farooqui,M. M; Prakash,Ajay.
A study was conducted on the testicles of 30 male Gaddi goats, divided into 3 groups viz; prepubertal (0 day to 18 months), pubertal (<18 months to >5 yrs) and post- pubertal (>5 yrs) ages. The study revealed that the testis was covered by fibroserous tunica albuginia having outer fibrous layer and inner vascular layer with smooth muscle fibers at birth. The tunica albuginia continuously grew in thickness from prepubertal to postpubertal animals. The septula testis arising from the tunica albuginia, divided the parenchyma in lobules and converged at mediastinum testis. Few differentiated and undifferentiated Leydig cells were present in the intertubular spaces of neonates, which enormously increased in pubertal animals and replaced by...

Carotid Arteries in the Dog: Structure and Histophysiology International Journal of Morphology
Orsi,Antonio M.; Domeniconi,Raquel F.; Artoni,Silvana Martinez B.; Filho,Joffre G..
Light microscopy analysis of the mural structure of the common carotid artery, internal carotid artery and external carotid artery in mongrel dog revealed variability in the middle values of vascular diameter and thickness of the intimal plus medial coats and adventitial coat. The vascular diameter did not differ between the internal carotid artery and external carotid artery, but was significantly increased in the common carotid artery from which the other two arteries had origin. The increased thickness of the intimal plus medial coats of the common carotid artery revealed the constant mechanical adjustment of the arterial wall and local shearing stress that occurred among the arterial coats. The adventitial coat of the internal carotid artery was...

HISTOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE SALIVARY GLANDS IN Dasypus hybridus (MAMMALIA, DASYPODIDAE) International Journal of Morphology
Codón,Stella Maris; Estecondo,Silvia; Casanave,Emma Beatriz.
The histology of the salivary glands of the armadillo Dasypus hybridus (Desmarest, 1804), was studied. Two pairs of salivary glands, parotid and submaxillary, and a salivary bladder are distinguished. Parotids are located anteriorly to the submaxillary glands. They are purely serous glands and excretory intralobular ducts, intercalated and particularly striated ones, are very numerous. Submaxillary glands are of greater size. They possess two lobes, which differs in their histology and histochemistry. The anterior lobe is mixed and the presence of numerous intralobular excretory ducts is remarkable. The bigger posterior lobe is mucous. Intralobular excretory ducts are observed, but they are not as abundant as in the anterior portion
