Extension of the geographic distribution of Plecturocebus baptista (Pitheciidae, Primates) and a possible hybrid zone with Plecturocebus hoffmannsi: evolutionary and conservation implications Acta Amazonica
ROCHA,Alessandro; BARNETT,Adrian P.A.; SPIRONELLO,Wilson R..
ABSTRACT Titi monkeys (family Pitheciidae) are Neotropical primates highly diversified in morphology, ecology and genetics, with a wide geographic distribution, including the Amazon, Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, Pantanal and Caatinga. This diversity, together with knowledge gaps, generates uncertainties in titi monkey taxonomy and distribution. An example is Plecturocebus baptista, with only 14 occurrence records and an ill-defined distribution based on untested geographical barriers. Here, we report the occurrence of this species at a new locality outside its known range, across the Paraná-Urariá River, which was considered a distributional limit for the species. The new record implies an overlap of P. baptista with the range of P. hoffmannsi. We document...

Morphological and genetic perspectives of hybridization in two contact zones of closely related species of Petunia (Solanaceae) in southern Brazil Acta Botanica
Teixeira,Marcelo C.; Turchetto,Caroline; Hartke,Sara; Schnitzler,Carolina K.; Freitas,Loreta B..
ABSTRACT Interspecific hybridization has several consequences for parental species, from blurring species limits to the emergence of new taxa. Petunia axillaris and P. exserta occur in sympatry in southernmost Brazil and naturally hybridize despite their different pollination syndromes and habitat requirements. We employed genetic and morphological analyses to characterize two contact zones between the species with the aim of determining the effect of interspecific hybridization. Microsatellite loci and a morphometric evaluation of the corolla shape were used to classify individuals based on their origin as pure parental or hybrids. Corolla color was used to classify individuals a priori (white, red or intermediate, for P. axillaris, P. exserta or hybrid,...

Species boundary and extensive hybridization and introgression in Petunia Acta Botanica
Turchetto,Caroline; Schnitzler,Carolina K.; Freitas,Loreta B..
ABSTRACT Studying the role of hybridization in the speciation of plants is one of the most thrilling areas of evolutionary biology. Hybridization in natural populations can act in opposition to divergence, contribute to adaptation through introgression or foster the emergence of new lineages via hybrid speciation. Species of the plant genus Petunia grow in open areas in southern South America. Some natural interspecific hybrid events have been described for the genus, such as between the endemic P. exserta and the widespread P. axillaris. Both species occur in sympatry in Serra do Sudeste (Brazil), where they occur in diverse habitats and exhibit floral divergence, which has been related to the attraction of different primary pollinators. The present study...

Evidence of genetic differentiation and karyotype evolution of the sedges Cyperus ligularis L. and C. odoratus L. (Cyperaceae) Acta Botanica
Cruz,Geyner Alves dos Santos; Vasconcelos,Santelmo; Pinangé,Diego Sotero de Barros; Gonçalves-Oliveira,Rodrigo Cesar; Alves,Marccus Vinícius; Torres,Rodrigo Augusto; Benko-Iseppon,Ana Maria.
ABSTRACT The taxonomy of Cyperaceae is complex, with genera like Cyperus harboring species complexes. We analyzed the genetic similarity between Cyperus ligularis L. and C. odoratus L. based on DNA fingerprinting and cytogenetics. Significative genetic differentiation (G ST = 0.363) and low gene flow (N m = 0.877) indicated a clear genetic distinction between the two species. Moreover, the clustering analysis showed two distinct genetic groups, suggesting a lack of evidence for hybridization. The phenogram revealed two different lineages, and although all individuals of C. odoratus were collected from plots close to each other, they possessed greater genetic diversity than that observed among individuals of C. ligularis, which were sampled over a wider...

Serological and molecular tools for strain discrimination of Citrus tristeza virus isolates from Nuevo Leon, Mexico Agrociencia
Iracheta-Cárdenas,María M.; Almeyda-León,Isidro H.; Cevik,Bayarm; Niblett,Charles L.; Lee,Richard F.; Rocha-Peña,Mario A..
Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) is an important issue to the Mexican citrus industry. CTV infected plants have been reported in 20 citrus producing states of the country as symptomless virus infections, even on plants grafted on the sensitive sour orange rootstock. The detection of severe CTV isolates is mandatory to reinforce the operation of the CTV campaign nationwide. In this study, 13 CTV isolates from Nuevo León and one from Tamaulipas states were characterized for activity against the strain discriminatory MCA13 monoclonal antibody, bi-directional (BD) PCR, and hybridization with specific DNA probes, with RT-PCR amplicons, of the p25 coat protein gene. Ten out of 13 CTV isolates from Nuevo León and the Tamaulipas isolate gave a positive reaction to the...

Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetic Analysis of Chimerism in Marmosets (Callithrix: Primates) Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,MONIQUE O.M.; ARMADA,JORGE LUÍS A. DE; VERONA,CARLOS EDUARDO S.; HELIODORO,GABRIELA; NOGUEIRA,DENISE M..
ABSTRACT The birth of fraternal twins is a characteristic frequently observed in callitrichids. Cytogenetic studies have demonstrated hematopoietic chimerism in marmosets with the occurrence of two cell lines 2n=46,XX/46,XY in females and males co-twins, without phenotypic changes. Amplification by PCR have also been used to verify the presence of the SRY gene in female chimaeras. Our aim was to verify the occurrence of chimerism in Callithrix sp. individuals considered as hybrids according to their intermediate phenotypes between C. jacchus and C. penicillata. Blood samples from 37 Callithrix sp. individuals were collected. Hematopoietic chimerism 2n=46,XX/46,XY was detected by cytogenetic analysis in five individuals, three males and two females. A...

Floral biology of cacauhy (Theobroma speciosum - Malvaceae) BABT
Souza,Márcio Silva de; Venturieri,Giorgini Augusto.
In the present work, cacauhy's (Theobroma speciosum) floral biology was studied. Flower buds split their sepals at 14h reaching its maximum at 22h, but all flowers were fully opened at 6:00 h of the following morning. Stigmatic branches showed exudates, reaching maximum between 6:00 h and 10:00 h at the same day. Ligules and petal hoods were the floral parts with highest intensity of odour. Flowers were receptive along all the morning and noon of the anthesis day. Approximately 65% of the flowers were naturally pollinated, but only 0.85% of them set a fruit. Abscission occurred on its higher frequency at 6:00 h of the second day after anthesis. Controlled pollinations showed that cacauhy was self-incompatible species.

Motta,Eder Alexandre Minski da; Dall'Agnol,Miguel; Nascimento,Felipe Link; Pereira,Emerson André; Machado,Juliana Medianeira; Barbosa,Marlon Risso; Simioni,Carine; Ferreira,Priscila Becker.
ABSTRACT: The goal of this study was to assess the variability of Paspalum plicatulum x P. guenoarum interspecific hybrids in terms of agronomic performance and their tolerance to cold conditions, as well as to estimate the correlation of different phenotypic characters associated with forage production. Twenty hybrids plants were used, besides one access P. guenoarum , one of P. plicatulum and the cultivar 'Pensacola' ( P. notatum ). Assessments were performed on individual plants, in a completely randomized design with five repetitions. Paspalum genotypes presented variability in total dry matter, leaf dry mass, leaf: stem ratio, and tolerance to cold. We suggest selection of the hybrids 08Q01 and 08Q44 for new stages within a forage improvement...

In vivo fertilization of banana Ciência Rural
Soares,Taliane Leila; Souza,Everton Hilo de; Costa,Maria Angélica Pereira de Carvalho; Silva,Sebastião de Oliveira e; Serejo,Janay Almeida dos Santos.
The aim of this research was to study the in vivo fertilization process of banana cultivars. The diploid hybrid (AA) 091087-01 was the male progenitor. Flower samples were checked for fertilization from the first to the twentieth day after pollination. The size of the diploid ovules increased gradually at the beginning of the seed formation process. On the other hand, in the AAA triploids (Cavendish subgroup), the not fertilized ovules were aborted. In the AAB triploids (Prata subgroup) some ovules were fertilized. The flowers of Grand Naine, Nanicão and 'Pacovan' cultivars presented necrosis in the distal part of the ovary on the first day after pollination. Necrosis can hinder pollen tube growth towards the ovule, which might be related to the low seed...
