ABSTRACT: The phytosociological method helps evaluate the vegetation composition. The objective of this study was to identify and quantify the main weed species present in irrigated rice. The phytosociological survey was carried out in three mainly rice monoculture, Clearfield® technology using properties in Itaqui-RS, between 2013 and 2014. For each property and period, a ½ ha representative area was selected and 10 random samples were collected, using a quadrat square of 1 m2. The sample colletion was conducted in two periods of time: during the irrigated rice crop initial growth and during the cereal’s pre-harvesting phase. All collected plants were identified and counted, allowing for their frequency, relative frequency, density, relative density,... |

ABSTRACT Lawn with grass classified as Axonopus compressus is very common in Brazil Southern region, where it normally presents an adequate low temperature tolerance and a high diversity of weed infestation. This work has aimed to conduct a phytosociological survey of weeds in lawn consisting of Axonopus compressus from CEDETEG/UNICENTRO University campus located in the Brazilian municipality of Guarapuava, in the state of Paraná, in different periods of 2013. One hundred eighty 0.50 x 0.50 m samples were collected in four months, from which parameters frequency, density, abundance, relative frequency, relative density, relative abundance and importance value index were calculated. In general, 24, 7, 17 and 14 weed species were identified, distributed in... |

Section 1 of this report shows demographic changes of the U.S. beef cow-calf industry from a historical perspective from data provided by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) and Census of Agriculture. Results of two NAHMS national studies in Section II complete the overview of change in the U.S. beef cow-calf industry during the 5-year period from 1993 to 1997. NAHMS, CHAPA Phase I included data collected from 2,539 cow-calf operations in the 48 continental states via telephone during the fall of 1992. Subsequent data collection was done on operations in 18 states and from producers with five or more beef cows and 50 percent or more of their calf crop born between January 1 and June 30 (spring calving) The 18 states represented 70... |

The aim of the study was to analyze the relations between the issues of satisfaction, commitment, identification and word of mouth. The study was based on a theoretical gap detected in the relations between these concepts and seeks to present some contributions regarding, specifically, organic food consumption. From a review of the literature, six hypotheses were made. To assess the hypotheses, field work was conducted among 134 organic food consumers in Fortaleza, Ceará state. In order to test the hypotheses, statistical regression analysis was used After the statistical analysis, the main conclusions were: (1) the relation between satisfaction and word of mouth, in the organic food sector, is partial when analyzed together with consumer identification;... |

The NAHMS Beef '97 Study was designed to provide both participants and the industry with information on the nation's cow-calf population for education and research. The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) collaborated with NAHMS to select a statistically-valid sample yielding 2,713 producers from 23 states. The 23-state target population represented 85.7 percent of U.S. beef cows on January 1, 1997, and 77.6 percent of U.S. beef operations. NASS enumerators collected data for this report via a questionnaire administered on-farm from December 30, 1996, through February 3, 1997. Contact for this paper: David Dargatz |

The objective of this research was to isolate and to verify the sensitivity to antimicrobial agents of strains of Salmonella sp. isolated from poultry products in the state of Ceara, Brazil. A total number of 114 samples was collected from 63 broiler carcasses derived from two processing plants and two supermarkets, and 51 excreta samples were collected in broiler farms located in the state of Ceara, which used three live production stages. Each excreta sample consisted of a fresh excreta pool from 100 birds. Samples were submitted to microbiological analyses, and the isolated Salmonella strains were tested for antimicrobial sensitivity. No Salmonella was isolated from excreta samples, while broiler carcass samples showed a high contamination rate of11.8%.... |

The laboratory-hatched first zoeal stage of twelve brachyuran species collected in the estuarine area of the Caeté River in the Amazonian region are described and illustrated in the present study: P. americanus Saussure, 1857, Eurytium limosum (Say, 1818), Sesarma curacaoense De Man, 1892, S. rectum Randall, 1840, Armases rubripes (Rathbun, 1897), Aratus pisonii (H. Milne Edwards, 1837), Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius, 1787), Uca rapax (Smith, 1870), U. maracoani (Latreille, 1802), U. thayeri Rathbun, 1900, Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) and Pachygrapsus gracilis (Saussure, 1858). Through intraspecific comparisons of the respective larval stage, an identification key was generated and provided. Most of the studied species presented morphological differences... |

Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) species cannot be discriminated by the usual methods of biochemical identification of mycobacteria. This study showed that amplification by PCR of DT1 and DT6, two single copy sequences identified in the genome of M. avium serotype 2, the insertion sequence IS1245, found to be consistently present in M. avium strains and the heat-shock protein gene hsp65, followed by restriction polymorphism analysis, are rapid and accurate tests for the differentiation of the species M. avium, M. intracellulare, and M. scrofulaceum. |

The blueberry, Vaccinium corymbosum L. (Ericaceae), is a shrub native to the northern Hemisphere introduced in Argentina, where it occupies small cultivated areas mainly in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Entre Ríos and Tucumán. At present, little is known about insects associated with this crop in Argentina. The aim of this study was to identify the species of Chrysomelidae present in blueberry crops in different regions of Argentina, and to present new chrysomelids-blueberry associations. Identification diagnosis, geographical distribution, association with other plants and aspects of their biology is given for each species. Seven species of crop-damaging Chrysomelidae were recorded in blueberry crops of Buenos Aires and Entre Rios. They belong to the... |
