Crop genetic resources are the building block of sustainable agricultural development as these can be used to develop crop varieties adaptable to heterogeneous environmental conditions. Nepal is considered the center of origin and diversity for Asian rice, which still has many landraces. However, there has been continuous loss of genetic diversity and concern over it has grown in recent years. The main objective of this paper is to identify the determinants of variety diversity on-farm in the rainfed ecosystem of Nepal by using two-limit Tobit procedure. The diversity on farm appeared to be quite high evaluated based on the number of named varieties grown by the farmers. Majority of the farmers cultivated both modern varieties and landraces simultaneously... |

Mushrooms are one of the organisms the nature that have a great capacity to adapt and develop in different weather conditions and in different agricultural environments. Mushrooms also make an important contribution to the satisfaction of some human necessities by the input of nutritional and medicinal products due to a wide diversity of properties that they posses. In addition, its production generates incomes and employment, for these reasons, the farming of mushrooms is a very important activity socially, economical and ecologically. In Yucatán, the farming of the mushroom “Pleurotus ostreatus “represents an option for the sustainable development of poor rural communities. Lack of access to nutritious food is an underlying and major cause of child mortality in Africa. Improving the nutritional quality of food crops, through biofortification, would be a useful complementary strategy to other agricultural and public health interventions. Quality Protein Maize (QPM) varieties have been developed through biofortification. Consumption of these varieties leads to greater protein utilisation in adults and children. In Kenya three QPM varieties have been released. In Central Kenya, particularly Kirinyaga district, farmers have come together through Innovation Platform for Technology Adoption ( IPTA) with the aim of production, value addition and marketing of QPM based products. These groups require information on the potential... |

This address is directed toward applied economists as they provide information to private and public decision makers. Central to this discussion is the role of markets as institutions in achieving society's desired ends. Current "economic correctness" -the view that unfettered markets are superior in achieving efficiency, growth, and welfare- has attempted to return a larger role to the private sector, but the relative roles of market-oriented versus government-oriented solutions to problems are often not well appraised. Views presented herein calls for agricultural economists to move simultaneously toward an understanding of the strategic behavior of firms in imperfectly competitive markets and toward an adoption of policy analysis consistent with a... |

Nowadays, pets represent an important economical support element as, in spite of the financial crisis and high unemployment rates Brazil has to face, the pet shop industry is expanding. Thus, there is direct and indirect encouragement to obtain a pet and strengthen the man-animal relationship. An epidemiological survey was conducted in the municipality of Bauru, state of São Paulo, to study the impact of companion animals on the household and the municipal economy. The study used questionnaires, personal interviews and was also held in veterinary practices, with a total sample of 115 animal owners (91 dogs, 24 cats). Considering the costs involved in the maintenance of pets under ideal conditions (food, drugs, vaccines, veterinary services), the estimated... |

In the early 2000s, sheep industry began to occupy a prominent position in Brazilian agribusiness, attracting investors and being recognized as a new alternative for farming diversification. Many breeders and new industries emerged, motivated by the deficit between production and demand for lamb in the country, which leads to the import of hundreds of thousands of tons of sheep meat every year. Nearly a decade has passed since the initial euphoria, which saw intense inflow of breeders to the activity, and this essay aims to make a brief summary of important facts occurred in 2013 regarding this supply chain, and to present some perspectives for next year. The evolution of the following topics is addressed: i) legal and illegal slaughter, ii) imports of... |

This work evaluated the changes in quality in early-harvested ‘Gold’ pineapple after coating with wax and exposure to 1-Methylcycloprepene before or after coating. The storage conditions and the experimental period simulated those of shipping and marketing, assuming that Ceará,Brazil, is the production site andEuropeis the marketplace. Evaluation was performed after harvest, upon removal of the fruit from cold storage, and every three days during room storage. Evaluations included visual quality of the fruit, shell yellowing, mass loss, flesh color, soluble solids, titratable acidity, pH, soluble solids to acid ratio, ascorbic acid, total soluble sugars, reducing sugar, phenolic content, and yellow flavonoids. Low temperature was the key variable for... |

This review highlights the current advances in knowledge about the safety, efficacy, quality control, marketing and regulatory aspects of botanical medicines. Phytotherapeutic agents are standardized herbal preparations consisting of complex mixtures of one or more plants which contain as active ingredients plant parts or plant material in the crude or processed state. A marked growth in the worldwide phytotherapeutic market has occurred over the last 15 years. For the European and USA markets alone, this will reach about $7 billion and $5 billion per annum, respectively, in 1999, and has thus attracted the interest of most large pharmaceutical companies. Insufficient data exist for most plants to guarantee their quality, efficacy and safety. The idea that... |
