Investigation of spatiotemporal patterns in mean temperature and mean trophic level of MEDITS survey catches in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Peristeraki, Panagiota; Bitetto, Isabella; Carbonara, Pierluigi; Carlucci, Roberto; Certain, Gregoire; De Carlo, Francesco; Gristina, Michele; Kamidis, Nikos; Pesci, Paola; Stagioni, Marco; Valls, María; Tserpes, George.
Mean temperature (MTC) and mean trophic level (MTL) spatiotemporal patterns of MEDITS survey catches were examined in 13 geographic statistical areas (GSAs) of the Mediterranean between 1994 and 2016. The study aimed to detect changes in the demersal community structure related to anthropogenic impacts. A generalized additive modelling approach was used to examine the effects of year and GSA on the MTC and MTL indexes and on bottom temperature by haul. For the MTC index, the year was significant only in 4 GSAs, while for MTL it was significant in 5. Higher MTC values were observed in central and eastern areas. Bottom temperature increased after 2010, and also from west to east and from north to south. Our results indicate that the recently observed...

A multi-model assessment of the impact of currents, waves and wind in modelling surface drifters and oil spill ArchiMer
De Dominicis, M.; Bruciaferri, D.; Gerin, R.; Pinardi, N.; Poulain, P. M.; Garreau, Pierre; Zodiatis, G.; Perivoliotis, L.; Fazioli, L.; Sorgente, R.; Manganiello, C..
Validation of oil spill forecasting systems suffers from a lack of data due to the scarcity of oil slick in-situ and satellite observations. Drifters (surface drifting buoys) are often considered as proxy for oil spill to overcome this problem. However, they can have different designs and consequently behave in a different way at sea, making it not straightforward to use them for oil spill model validation purposes and to account for surface currents, waves and wind when modelling them. Stemming from the need to validate the MEDESS4MS (Mediterranean Decision Support System for Marine Safety) multi-model oil spill prediction system, which allows access to several ocean, wave and meteorological operational model forecasts, an exercise at sea was carried out...

Données historiques sur les anciennes madragues françaises de Méditerranée ArchiMer
Farrugio, Henri.
The ancient French traps for fishing tunas were installed all along the Côtes de Provence and the Côte d´Azur, up to the Italian border and they pertained to rich noblemen. These traps caught, as by-catch, considerable amounts of other migratory species (small tunas and Mackerels) and also some dolphins and sharks. These traps practically disappeared in the XX century due to technological development in the field of coastal maritime navigation and to other trades relation to fishing.

Production de mollusques en mer ouverte dans le bassin méditerranéen ArchiMer
Danioux, Christian; Bompais, Xavier; Loste, C; Paquotte, Philippe.
In the Mediterranean basin, the offshore mollusc production takes place mainly in France and Italy. Its recent development is the consequence of the small size of lagoons and ponds, and it is principally centred on the mussel. The farming technologies on long lines are described and compared with those used in the Atlantic. Some information is given on the production systems and a short economic study demonstrates the profitability of these shell farming activities, in spite of the many risks involved, but also their relatively low profit margins. Habitats of ten demersal species in the Gulf of Lions and potential implications for spatial management ArchiMer
Morfin, Marie; Bez, Nicolas; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
An improved knowledge of habitat utilization by demersal species is a pre-requisite for their spatial management. Based on scientific survey data collected over the period 1994-2010, the present study investigates relationships between 4 environmental factors and 10 demersal species in the Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea). Generalized linear models provided statistically satisfying results in terms of both model explanatory and predictive powers. The 'biological zone' factors, based on the percentage of light penetration to the sea bottom and bottom temperature, were the most important factors, while sediments and benthic macrofauna were only significant for a few species. The type of associations varied among species, resulting in different...

Optimisation de la surveillance des masses d’eau DCE en Méditerranée. Utilisation de produits dérivés d’images satellites en complément du réseau de mesures in-situ ArchiMer
Ganzin, Nicolas; Mangin, Antoine.
This study aims at showing the potential of « water colour » data derived from satellite imagery to optimise the monitoring of coastal waters within the WFD, with the French Mediterranean as a study area. The work is focused on one specific parameter, the surface chlorophyll-A (chl-a) concentration of which a monthly atlas for reference to “normal” values is provided, which consists of : (i) the monthly chl-a median computed from satellite data of 2003, 2004 and 2005 ; (ii) the integration in space of these values, represented by their average over the WFD water masses (except those of very small size) ; (iii) an indicator of the spatial variability of the chl-a through the spatial standard deviation within each water mass. Another important result is the...

Biogeochemical Argo: The Test Case of the NAOS Mediterranean Array ArchiMer
D’ortenzio, Fabrizio; Taillandier, Vincent; Claustre, Hervé; Prieur, Louis Marie; Leymarie, Edouard; Mignot, Alexandre; Poteau, Antoine; Penkerc’h, Christophe; Schmechtig, Catherine Marie.
The necessity of wide, global-scale observing systems for marine biogeochemistry emerged dramatically in the last decade. A global network based on Biogeochemical (BGC) Argo floats is considered to be one of the most promising approaches for reaching this goal. As a first step, pilot studies were encouraged to test the feasibility of a global BGC-Argo array, to consolidate the methods and practices under development, and to set up the array’s characteristics. A pilot study in The Mediterranean Sea—deemed a suitable candidate for a test case because it combines a relatively large diversity of oceanic BGC conditions in a reduced open-ocean basin—was consequently approved as a part of the “Novel Argo ocean Observing System” (NAOS) project, a French national...

Sources and exchanges of mercury in the waters of the Northwestern Mediterranean margin ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; De Madron, Xavier Durrieu; Schafer, Jorg; Guedron, Stephane; Marusczak, Nicolas; Castelle, Sabine; Naudin, Jean-jacques.
Ocean margins are focal regions in terms of mercury (Hg) exchanges between the continent and the open sea. The aim of this paper is to describe the distribution and partition of Hg between the gaseous, dissolved and particulate phases in the waters of the Northwestern Mediterranean (NWM) margin, in order to assess the Hg sources and exchanges within the continuum between the continental shelf (Gulf of Lions) and the open sea (Northern Gyre). Mean (± standard deviation) of total Hg species (HgT) concentrations in unfiltered water samples were 1.52 ± 1.00 pmol L-1 (n=36) in the inner shelf, 1.09 ± 0.15 pmol L-1 (n=30) along the slope, and 1.10 ± 0.13 pmol L-1 (n=99) in the Northern Gyre. The dissolved phase (<0.45µm) average concentrations were 0.80 ±...

Contrasting shell growth strategies in two Mediterranean bivalves revealed by oxygen-isotope ratio geochemistry: The case of Pecten jacobaeus and Glycymeris pilosa ArchiMer
Peharda, Melita; Thebault, Julien; Markulin, Kresimir; Schone, Bernd R.; Janekovic, Ivica; Chauvaud, Laurent.
High-resolution stable-isotope ratio data (delta O-18, delta O-18) were used to study growth strategies of two bivalve species, Pecten jacobaeus (calcitic shell) and Glycymeris pilosa (aragonitic shell) from the North Adriatic Sea. The principal objectives of this study were to identify the period of the year when the growth line is formed in the shell of two target species, to identify the main growing season of these two species, to identify the environmental drivers of shell growth, and to evaluate the potential applicability of delta O-18 and delta O-18 values for the reconstruction of environmental variability. Samples were collected from the North Adriatic Sea by commercial bean trawl (P. jacobaeus, December 2013 and January 2014, N = 4) and SCUBA...

Long-term changes in sand-bottom macrofauna along the coast of Provence (northwest Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Masse, Hl.
At a time when there is a great deal of talk of the degradation of the coastal environment and of biodiversity being threatened, we felt it would be of interest to sample the macrofauna of five sites at five metres depth in well sorted fine sand at a thirty-year interval (1966-1996), using the same techniques. Four seasonal samplings provided comparative data at each site on the species richness (S), density (N) and biomass (B). The S values are comparable and even on the increase at two stations. Nevertheless, we observed a general tendency towards decline in the relative abundance of the crustacean group. From the quantitative point of view (N and B), the changes observed would appear to result from the impact of clearly identifiable human pressure, such...

The Mediterranean Targeted Project MATER - a multiscale approach of the variability of a marine system - overview ArchiMer
Monaco, André; Peruzzi, Stefano.
The papers presented in this volume represent only a small part of the results obtained within the scope of the first integrated programme concerning the Mediterranean Sea. The latter is considered as a downscaled model of the ocean system, and a regional sea for the targeted projects supported by the European Commission. Whatever the domain is, the variability of the system appeared as a major feature. Consequently, this theme has been selected, among the main initial objectives, as the central subject of this volume. Spatial and temporal variabilities are considered, at different scales and at different (water, particles, sediment, trophic) levels of the marine ecosystem. In the hereafter contributions, one will find the long-term (millenar, secular and...

Tracking rainfall in the northern Mediterranean borderlands during sapropel deposition ArchiMer
Toucanne, Samuel; Mintoo, Charlie Morelle Angue; Fontanier, Christophe; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael.
The role of mid-latitude precipitation in the hydrological forcing leading to the deposition of sapropels in the Mediterranean Sea remains unclear. The new GDEC-4-2 borehole, East Corsica margin (northern Tyrrhenian Sea), provides the first precisely dated evidence for enhanced rainfall in the Western Mediterranean during warm intervals of interglacial periods over the last 547 kyr. Comparison of GDEC-4-2 proxy records with pollen sequences and speleothems from the central and eastern Mediterranean reveals that these pluvial events were regional in character and occurred probably in response to the intensification of the Mediterranean storm track along the northern Mediterranean borderlands in autumn/winter. Our dataset suggests that the timing of maxima...

Origin and Accumulation of Trace Elements in Sediments of the Northwestern Mediterranean Margin ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Buscail, R.; Puig, P.; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Radakovitch, Olivier; Jeanty, G.; Heussner, S..
Continental margins receive natural and anthropogenic trace elements (TEs) from direct atmospheric deposition of aerosols onto the sea surface and from advection of riverine suspended particles and/or resuspended sediments from the continental shelf/slope. When the margin is incised by submarine canyons, as for example in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea, most of these particles are preferentially transferred via these topographic features towards their final repositories in the abyssal plain. The Gulf of Lions (GoL) shelf receives the largest particulate riverine input to the Western Mediterranean, with its associated chemical contaminants originating from the industrialized and urbanized Rhone Valley. Sediments samples (grabs, cores and moored traps)...

Variabilité spatiale et temporelle d'une pêcherie au filet dans le golfe du Lion. Essai d'évaluation de l'impact d'un récif artificiel ArchiMer
Duclerc, Jean; Bertrand, Jacques.
The laying out of an offshore site in the gulf of Lion has been realized by immersion of concrete structures in 1985. Two complementary studies have been conducted in order to estimate the impact of such artificiel reef. Gillnet fishery surveys have been done in the vicinity of the structures and also on a control site. Moreover the local profcssional fishery has been investigated for two periods of 16 months, one berore and one arter the reef immersion. The results of the gillnet surveys have already been submitted to publication and the present study displays the investigations concerning the local fishery. It has been shown by the gillnet fishing surveys that the artificial reef led in their very close vicinity to variations in marine species...

Nonstationary heat-transfer and interstitial solute diagenesis in disturbed sediments ArchiMer
Michel, D; Caschetto, S.
The results of continuous temperature versus time measurements obtained simultaneously 7.0 cm below and 10 cm above the sediment/seawater interface in the proximity of the Revellata headland (Corsica, Mediterranean Sea) over a 6.5-day period are presented. The bottom of the 7 rn deep water column undergoes distinct thermal events of advective origin and a strong stirring owing to a weather alteration. Heat propagation in the sand 7.0 cm below the interface in a nonstationary state is described by means of a mathematical model based on the heat conduction equation and with the assumption that the heat is conservative. This description is achieved without any adjustment of the model to the data. Since the K. value characteristic of unconsolidated clastic...

Glider-Based Active Acoustic Monitoring of Currents and Turbidity in the Coastal Zone ArchiMer
Gentil, Mathieu; Many, Gaël; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier; Cauchy, Pierre; Pairaud, Ivane; Testor, Pierre; Verney, Romaric; Bourrin, François.
The recent integration of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) onto underwater gliders changes the way current and sediment dynamics in the coastal zone can be monitored. Their endurance and ability to measure in all weather conditions increases the probability of capturing sporadic meteorological events, such as storms and floods, which are key elements of sediment dynamics. We used a Slocum glider equipped with a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth), an optical payload, and an RDI 600 kHz phased array ADCP. Two deployments were carried out during two contrasting periods of the year in the Rhone River region of freshwater influence (ROFI). Coastal absolute currents were reconstructed using the shear method and bottom tracking measurements, and...

Do population and community metrics tell the same story about recent changes in Northern Mediterranean fish communities? ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Trenkel, Verena; Gil De Sola, Luis; Politou, Chrissi-yianna; Tserpes, George; Bertrand, Jacques.
This document presents a comparative study of human impacts on the length-structure of fish communities across North-Mediterranean ecosystems. We use survey data to examine trends in length-based metrics and their consistency within and among the two levels of organisation populations and communities, and to suggest interpretations of observed trend combinations. We start from a set of population processes potentially affected by human pressures: fishing will induce mortality especially in target species, whereas the hydrological environment and eutrophication potentially affect recruitment and individual growth. How population changes will be reflected at the community level is expected to depend on community evenness. Based on this expectation, a...

Microsatellite markers developed through pyrosequencing allow clonal discrimination in the invasive alga Caulerpa taxifolia ArchiMer
Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Candeias, Rui; Serrao, Ester A.; Teixeira, Sara.
Polymorphic microsatellites were developed for the invasive green algae Caulerpa taxifolia using next generation DNA sequencing. Results showed a limited rate of microsatellites for the amount of sequences, possibly explaining failure of previous attempts for microsatellite development through classical methods. Eight polymorphic loci were selected that exhibited polymorphism and a null or negligible rate of amplification failure. The number of alleles per locus ranged from two to seven. The reconstruction of Multi Locus Genotypes and the heterozygosity and departure from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium confirmed the influence of clonal reproduction and showed the usefulness of this set of markers to successfully discriminate clonal lineages and analyze the...
