Adding new pieces to the Azadinium (Dinophyceae) diversity and biogeography puzzle: Non-toxigenic Azadinium zhuanum sp. nov. from China, toxigenic A. poporum from the Mediterranean, and a non-toxigenic A. dalianense from the French Atlantic ArchiMer
Luo, Zhaohe; Krock, Bernd; Mertens, Kenneth; Nezan, Elisabeth; Chomerat, Nicolas; Bilien, Gwenael; Tillmann, Urban; Gu, Haifeng.
The marine planktonic dinophyceaen genus Azadinium is a primary source of azaspiracids, but due to their small size its diversity may be underestimated and information on its biogeography is still limited. A new Azadinium species, A. zhuanum was obtained from the East China Sea and Yellow Sea of China by incubating surface sediments. Five strains were established by isolating single germinated cells and their morphology was examined with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Azadinium zhuanum was characterized by a plate pattern of Po, cp, X, 4′, 2a, 6′′, 6C, 5S, 6′′′, 2′′′′, by a distinct ventral pore at the junction of Po, the first and fourth apical plates, and a conspicuous antapical spine. Moreover, Azadinium poporum was obtained for the...

Plankton as biological pump for contaminants in marine ecosystems: a transmediterranean approach (Merite Hippocampe cruise, april-mai 2019) ArchiMer
Carlotti, François; Tronczynski, Jacek; Tedetti, Marc; Pagano, Marc; Garnier, Cédric.
Recent research on the bioaccumulation of organic and trace element contaminants along trophic food webs suggests that plankton plays a central role as a 'biological pump' for pollutants. The MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE project (oceanographic cruise in April- May 2019) aims at studying the interactions between plankton and contaminants (metallic, organic plastics) at atmosphere/water/biota interfaces via a North-South trans-Mediterranean approach in contrasted areas (primary production, fishing zones, ecoregions, polluted bays). The target contaminants are on the lists of priority pollutants and substances of Regional Conventions (OSPAR) and EU directives (WFD, MSF). The expected results are to provide a better understanding of the transfer processes of contaminants...

Morphology and reproduction of Asiatic Ulva pertusa (Ulvales, Chlorophyta) in Thau Lagoon (France, Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Verlaque, Marc; Belsher, Thomas; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc.
A detailed study of vegetative and reproductive phases of several populations of a common species of Ulva from Thau Lagoon (France, Mediterranean Sea) showed that the material is in good agreement with Asiatic Ulva pertusa Kjellman. Since October 1994, the date of its first observation in Thau Lagoon, U. pertusa has developed abundant reproductive populations. It is highly probable that this species was introduced at Thau along with oyster transfers from the Pacific. Ulva pertusa is new to the Mediterranean Sea.

Diversité ichtyologique en Méditerranée : patrons, modélisation et projections dans un contexte de réchauffement global ArchiMer
Ben Rais Lasram, Frida.
Due to its semi-enclosed shape, to its high species richness and high endemism levels and to its invasiveness, the Mediterranean Sea is one of the most particular and critical ecosystems of the world. The Mediterranean has been intensively studied since the Antiquity, yet foundations underlying fish diversity patterns have been overlooked. In this study, as a first step, we studied fish diversity patterns in the Mediterranean and their determinants. Towards this objective, we built the first comprehensive database on the spatial distributions of the 619 Mediterranean fish species. We then carried out spatial analyses in order to assess the relative contribution of historical and geometric contingencies as well as environmental influences in shaping fish...

An underwater tracking system for mapping marine communities: an application to Posidonia oceanica ArchiMer
Sgorbini, S; Peirano, A; Cocito, S; Morgigni, M.
The GPS intelligent buoy is a pot-table underwater tracking system consisting of four buoys and one pinger. The pinger was mounted on an underwater vehicle driven by a Scuba diver and used to map the limits of a Posidonia oceanica meadow. To test the accuracy of the method the system was tried out on different types of limits and on healthy and regressed part of the meadow from 2 to 25 m of depth. The time of track acquisition (1 point per second), the recording speed (1 km h(-1)) and the mapping scale (more than 1:500) indicated that the proposed method may be successfully integrated with conventional systems for mapping marine communities. Using SeaDataNet Management System to preserve the XBT Data-Set of the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Pecci, Leda; Ciuffardi, Tiziana; Reseghetti, Franco; Fichaut, Michele; Picco, Paola; Schaap, Dick.
significant amount of Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) data has been collected in the Mediterranean Sea since 1999 in the framework of operational oceanography activities. The management and storage of such a volume of data poses significant challenges and opportunities. The SeaDataNet project, a pan-European infrastructure for marine data diffusion, provides a convenient way to avoid dispersion of these temperature vertical profiles and to facilitate access to a wider public. The XBT data flow, along with the recent improvements in the quality check procedures and the consistence of the available historical data set are described. The main features of SeaDataNet services and the advantage of using this system for long-term data archiving are presented....

Vertical distributions of macroplankton and micronekton in the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas (northwestern Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Andersen, V; Francois, F; Sardou, J; Picheral, M; Scotto, M; Nival, Paul.
Vertical distributions and diel migrations at nineteen stations located in the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas (northwestem Mediterranean) are described in detail and compared for the main species of micronekton and macroplankton. Sampling was performed in April 1994 in the 0-700 m water column in most cases, down to 350, 450 or 550 m for the coastal or relatively shallow sites. Most of the twenty species showed similar distributions throughout the sampled area, either non-diel-migrating distributions such as the euphausiid Stylocheiron longicorne and the fish Cyclothone braueri, or clear diel-migrant behaviour (e.g. the siphonophore Chelophyes appendiculata and the euphausiid Euphausia krohni). Four species, the siphonophore Lensia conoidea, the pteropods...

As condition is a key variable in population dynamics (especially for survival, growth and reproduction), the use of well-defined and accurate fish condition indices is capital. In particular, condition indices (morphometric, bioenergetic and biochemical) have never been compared and validated for the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus, the European pilchard Sardina pilchardus and the European sprat Sprattus sprattus. The accuracy of two indirect methods, the morphometric relative condition index Kn and the bioenergetics index determined with the Distell Fish Fatmeter was investigated by comparing with a direct measure of relative lipid content carried out with a thin layer chromatography-flame ionization detector. Estimations from the fatmeter...

The Mediterranean distributions of two species of anglerfish, the blackbellied anglerfish (Lophius budegassa) and the white anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius), were analysed from trawl survey data (MEDITS project – Spain, France, Italy and Greece) from 2006 to 2015 implementing a Delta model approach with residuals autocovariate boosted regression trees. Sea bottom temperature (SBT), sea bottom salinity (SBS), bathymetry, slope of the seabed and distance to the coast were considered possible predictors. The results show that the locations with a higher presence, abundance and biomass of L. budegassa are those with a depth range between 150 to 300 m, with an SBT range between 17.5 and 18.5°C, and SBS of 37-38 PSU. Similarly, L. piscatorius shows a higher...

Patterns of bacteria-host associations suggest different ecological strategies between two reef building cold-water coral species ArchiMer
Meistertzheim, Anne. -leila; Lartaud, Franck; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Kalenitchenko, Dimitri; Bessalam, Manon; Le Bris, Nadine; Galand, Pierre E..
Cold-water corals (CWC) are main ecosystem engineers of the deep sea, and their reefs constitute hot-spots of biodiversity. However, their ecology remains poorly understood, particularly, the nature of the holobiont formed by corals with their associated bacterial communities. Here, we analysed Madrepora oculata and Lophelia pertusa samples, collected from one location in a Mediterranean canyon in two different seasons (autumn and spring), in order to test for species specificity and temporal stability of the host-bacteria associations. The 16S rRNA sequencing revealed host-specific patterns of bacterial communities associated with L. pertusa and M. oculata, both in terms of community composition and diversity. All analyzed M. oculata polyps exhibited...

Seasonal dependence on seagrass detritus and trophic niche partitioning in four copepod eco-morphotypes ArchiMer
Mascart, Thibaud; De Troch, Marleen; Remy, François; Michel, Loic; Lepoint, Gilles.
Benthic copepods dominate meiofaunal communities from marine phytodetritus, both in terms of numerical abundance and species diversity. Nevertheless, ecological factors driving copepod co-existence and population dynamics are still largely unknown. Here, we aimed to explore feeding habits of four copepod species commonly found in Mediterranean seagrass detritus accumulations, representing distinct eco-morphotypes (planktonic, phytal, epibenthic and mesopsammic). Joint use of fatty acid and stable isotope trophic markers showed that co-occurring harpacticoid copepods have diversified diets. Contrary to what was expected, microphytobenthos does not serve as their main food source. Instead, we found evidence from both techniques that major food items include...

Field investigations and multi-indicators for shallow water lagoon management: perspective for societal benefit ArchiMer
Brehmer, Patrice; Thang Do Chi,; Laugier, Thierry; Galgani, Francois; Laloe, Francis; Darnaude, Audrey M.; Fiandrino, Annie; Mouillot, David.
1. Abiotic and biotic variables of coastal lagoons are highly heterogeneous in both space and time, and this heterogeneity complicates the assessment of their ecological status. These variables are essential to the monitoring and preservation of these fragile ecotones and the resources and services they sustain. 2. An integrative approach for evaluating the ecological status of coastal lagoons, based on field investigations of the key parameters driving their functioning and a set of selected ecological indicators matching lagoon management information needs for societal benefits, is investigated. Consistency in lagoon status evaluation from multiple and different variables was estimated, through a case study comparing three adjacent yet contrasting French...

Our knowledge for the distribution of Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) in the Mediterranean Sea is limited and fragmented. In the current work habitat suitability modeling was applied to summer acoustic surveys data of Atlantic mackerel juveniles derived from the north part of the Mediterranean (i.e., acoustic data from the Gulf of Lions, pelagic trawls held during acoustic surveys in Spanish Mediterranean waters, south Adriatic Sea, Strait of Sicily, and North Aegean Sea) using generalized additive models (GAMs) along with satellite environmental and bathymetry data. Bathymetry along with sea surface temperature and circulation patterns, expressed through sea level anomaly and the zonal component of the absolute geostrophic velocity, were the...

Brachidontes variabilis and Patella sp as quantitative biological indicators for cadmium, lead and mercury in the Lebanese coastal waters ArchiMer
Nakhle, Khaled; Cossa, Daniel; Khalaf, Ghaby; Beliaeff, Benoit.
The mussel, Brachidontes variabilis, and the limpet, Patella sp., were used as indicators to monitor cadmium, lead and mercury concentrations along the Lebanese coast. Studies were carried out in order to define the best strategy for assessing and minimizing the effects of size and physiological condition on the metal contents of the molluscs, and corrective models were constructed. Metal concentrations in surface water were measured to estimate bioconcentration factors (BCFs). The BCFs varied from 8.3 x 10(3) to 3.4 x 10(4), from 7.5 x 10(3) to 8.0 X 10(3) and from 3.0 x 10(4) to 3.2 x 10(4), for Cd, Pb and Hg, respectively. For limpets, BCFs varied from 1.7 x 10(4) to 7.4 x 10(4) for Cd, from 2.5 x 10(3) to 6 x 103 for Pb and remained fairly constant at...

Unravelling the ecological role and trophic relationships of uncommon and threatened elasmobranchs in the western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Barria, Claudio; Coll, Marta; Navarro, Joan.
Deficiencies in basic ecological information on uncommon and endangered elasmobranch fishes impair the assessment of their ecological role in marine ecosystems. In this study, we examined the feeding ecology (diet composition and trophic level) and trophic relationships of 22 elasmobranchs (2 Carcharhiniformes, 1 Hexanchiformes, 1 Lamniformes, 3 Myliobatiformes, 6 Rajiformes, 6 Squaliformes and 3 Torpediniformes) present in the western Mediterranean Sea. To obtain a comprehensive view of the feeding ecology of these species, we combined different approaches: stable isotope analyses (delta C-13 and delta N-15 values), stomach content analyses and published sources. Our results revealed differences in feeding strategies among elasmobranch groups: skates...

Comparison of methods for stock assessment of European hake Merluccius merluccius in the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern mediterranean) ArchiMer
Aldebert, Yvonne; Recasens, Laura.
European hake Merluccius merluccius is the main commercial demersal species in the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean). This fish is exploited by French and Spanish trawler fleets and by small-scale fisheries using gillnets and longlines. Data on landings and the demography of catches by type of gear are now available for the period 1988-1991. The assessment of the hake stock was carried out using methods of virtual population analysis (VPA), or cohort analysis, based respectively on mean pseudocohorts and cohorts by age. The results of these VPA were then analysed and compared from a methodological point of view. The general results have confirmed previous studies with regard to the level of exploitation of the species. The two methods gave quite...

During winter 2012-2013, open-ocean deep convection which is a major driver for the thermohaline circulation and ventilation of the ocean, occurred in the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea) and has been thoroughly documented thanks in particular to the deployment of several gliders, Argo profiling floats, several dedicated ship cruises, and a mooring array during a period of about a year. Thanks to these intense observational efforts, we show that deep convection reached the bottom in winter early in February 2013 in a area of maximum 28±3 109m9. We present new quantitative results with estimates of heat and salt content at the sub-basin scale at different time scales (on the seasonal scale to a ten days basis) through optimal interpolation...

Potential feeding and spawning habitats of Atlantic bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Druon, Jean-noel; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Aulanier, Florian; Heikkonen, Jukka.
Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus (ABFT) is a fish of high market value which has recently become strongly overexploited, notably in the Mediterranean Sea. This area is an essential habitat for ABFT reproduction and growth. We present here an approach for deriving the daily mapping of potential ABFT feeding and spawning habitats based on satellite-derived sea surface temperature (SST) and chl a concentration. The feeding habitat was mainly derived from the simultaneous occurrence of oceanic fronts of temperature and chl a content while the spawning habitat was mostly inferred from the heating of surface waters. Generally, higher chl a contents were found to be preferred for the feeding habitat and a minimum SST value was found for the spawning habitat....
