Plant species and habitat structure in a sand dune field in the brazilian Caatinga: a homogeneous habitat harbouring an endemic biota Rev. Bras. Bot.
Rocha,Pedro Luís B. da; Queiroz,Luciano P. de; Pirani,José Rubens.
One dune habitat in the semi-arid Caatinga Biome, rich in endemisms, is described based on plant species composition, woody plant density, mean height and phenology and a multivariate analysis of the micro-habitats generated by variables associated to plants and topography. The local flora is composed mainly by typically sand-dweller species of Caatinga, suggesting the existence of a phytogeographic unity related to the sandy areas in the Caatinga biome, which seems to be corroborated by faunal distribution. Moreover, some species are probably endemic from the dunes, a pattern also found in vertebrates. The plant distribution is patchy, there is no conspicuous herbaceous layer and almost 50% of the ground represents exposed sand. Phenology is not...

Reproductive phenology, pollination and seed dispersal syndromes on sandstone outcrop vegetation in the "Chapada Diamantina", northeastern Brazil: population and community analyses Rev. Bras. Bot.
Conceição,Abel Augusto; Funch,Ligia Silveira; Pirani,José Rubens.
Vegetation on rock outcrops in the "Chapada Diamantina" (soil islands) is often aggregated and surrounded by nude rock surfaces, thus creating natural units with well defined limits. The flowering and fruiting cycles of plants on 58 soil islands at altitudes between 1,100 and 1,140 meters above sea leavel were analyzed at Mãe Inácia Peak (12°27' S and 41°28' W) in the "Chapada Diamantina", Bahia, Brazil. The presence/absence of flowering and fruiting species on each soil island, and their respective cover areas were analyzed at both the population and community levels, and the phenophases of flowering and fruiting were observed during 24 successive months. The analyses of pollination and seed dispersal syndromes indicated that animals are more important in...

Phenology, litterfall, growth, and root biomass in a tidal floodplain forest in the Amazon estuary Rev. Bras. Bot.
Cattanio,José H.; Anderson,Anthony B.; Rombold,John S.; Nepstad,Daniel C..
The dynamics of forests subject to inundation appears to be strongly influenced by the frequency and intensity of natural disturbances such as flooding. In a late successional tidal floodplain forest near the Amazon port of Belém, Brazil, we tested this prediction by measuring seasonal patterns of phenology and litterfall in relation to two key variables: rainfall and tide levels. In addition, we estimated the root biomass and the annual growth of the forest community by measuring stem increments over time. Our results showed high correlations between phenological events (flowering and fruiting) and rainfall and tide levels, while correlations between litterfall and these variations were generally weaker. Contrary to our prediction, root biomass to 1 m...

Dispersal modes and fruiting periods in hyperseasonal and seasonal savannas, central Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Silva,Igor Aurélio; Cianciaruso,Marcus Vinicius; Batalha,Marco Antônio.
Seasonal savannas are characterized by an intense drought that influences their functioning. Hyperseasonal savannas experience additionally a waterlogging during the rainy season. In South America, the largest savanna environment is the Brazilian cerrado. To assess whether a particular dispersal mode or fruiting period is associated to the waterlogging, we examined dispersal and phenological groups in hyperseasonal and seasonal cerrado plant species. We compared the proportion of species and individuals in these groups with G-tests for independence in contingency tables. We did not find differences in the proportion of species; however, based on the proportion of individuals, the main dispersal strategy was anemochory in the hyperseasonal cerrado and...

Patterns of litter production in a secondary alluvial Atlantic Rain Forest in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Scheer,Maurício Bergamini; Gatti,Gustavo; Wisniewski,Celina; Mocochinski,Alan Yukio; Cavassani,André Targa; Lorenzetto,Alexandre; Putini,Francisco.
Above-ground litter production is one of the most accessible ways to estimate ecosystem productivity, nutrient fluxes and carbon transfers. Phenological patterns and climatic conditions are still not fully explained well for tropical and subtropical forests under less pronounced dry season and non-seasonal climates, as well as the interaction of these patterns with successional dynamics. Monthly litterfall was estimated for two years in a 9 to 10 year old secondary alluvial Atlantic Rain forest. Total litterfall was higher in the site with more developed vegetation (6.4 ± 1.2 ton ha-1 year-1; 95% confidence interval) as compared to the site with less developed vegetation (3.0 ± 1.0 ton ha-1 year-1). The monthly production of 11 litter fractions (eight...

Timing and Splitting of Nitrogen Side-Dress Fertilization of Early Corn Hybrids for High Grain Yield Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Panison,Fernando; Sangoi,Luís; Durli,Murilo Miguel; Leolato,Lucieli Santini; Coelho,Antonio Eduardo; Kuneski,Hugo Francois; Liz,Vander Oliveira de.
ABSTRACT Currently, most nitrogen fertilizer is side-dressed when corn is in the four (V4) to eight (V8) expanded leaf stage. However, recent studies have shown that modern hybrids take up high amounts of nitrogen during grain filling. This indicates that a late nitrogen fertilization, at the time of crop flowering, may be important to optimize corn agronomic performance. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the timing and splitting of nitrogen side-dress application on the agronomic performance of early corn hybrids in order to achieve high grain yield. The experiment was set in Lages, Santa Catarina, in the South of Brazil, during the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 growing seasons. A randomized block design arranged in split plots was used. Two hybrids...

Productive characteristics and water use efficiency in cotton plants under different irrigation strategies AGRIAMBI
Silva,Vamberto G. de F.; Andrade,Albericio P. de; Fernandes,Pedro D.; Silva,Ivandro de F. da; Azevedo,Carlos A. V. de; Araújo,Jucilene S..
Studies have been carried out on efficient water use in irrigation. The present study evaluates the yield of cotton plants (Gossypium hirsutum L. r. latifolium Hutch), and the use of water for different irrigation strategies. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions, and the cultivar used was CNPA-7H Precocious grown in plastic pots; each pot contained 20 kg of dry soil. The irrigation strategies were selected by taking into account the available water in the soil, the irrigation frequency and the irrigation suppression during flowering and boll development. Water consumption, boll weight, yield, harvest index and water use efficiency were evaluated and the results showed that water consumption resulting from the irrigation strategies used...

Impacts of climatic changes on the vegetative development of olive cultivars AGRIAMBI
Florêncio,Gabriel W. L.; Martins,Fabrina B.; Ferreira,Mábele de C.; Pereira,Rodolfo A. de A..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to simulate the vegetative development of the olive cultivars Arbequina and MGS ASC315 cultivated in Maria da Fé, MG, Brazil (22° 18’ 29” S, 45° 22’ 31” W, 1.276 m of altitude). The development of these cultivars was simulated in nine transplanting dates, considering three distinct scenarios for three periods (2011-2040, 2041-2070 and 2071-2100). Climate changes influence the olive crop management. The increase in air temperature modifies the development rate and the duration of the seedling phase of the cultivars Arbequina and MGSASC315. In colder months, there is accelerated vegetative development and shorter seedling phase duration. Conversely, in warmer months, there is delayed development with longer seedling phase...

Interseasonal variation of Chrysodeixis includens (Walker, [1858]) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) populations in the Brazilian Savanna Rev. Bras. entomol.
Santos,Sabrina Raisa dos; Specht,Alexandre; Carneiro,Eduardo; Paula-Moraes,Silvana Vieira de; Casagrande,Mirna Martins.
Abstract Chrysodeixis includens (Walker, [1858]) is currently the main plusiine pest in the Americas, not only because of the damage caused to soybean, but also with several crop species in a broad geographical range. However, its population dynamics is still poorly understood, despite outbreak records that are common across different locations in the Americas. The current study aimed at identifying phenological patterns of C. includens emphasizing its differences among the three years of sampling effort in an intercropping area of the Brazilian Savanna. Thereafter, we tested whether the El Niño size effect, meteorological factors, or soybean, corn and wheat cycles, are better predictors of its monthly abundance. The insects were collected with a light...

Diurnal flight periodicity of a Neotropical ant assemblage (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) in the Atlantic Forest Rev. Bras. entomol.
Feitosa,Rodrigo M.; Silva,Rogério R. da; Aguiar,Alexandre P..
ABSTRACT In this study we document for the first time flight patterns along a 24 h time range for an ant assemblage in one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth, the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Malaise traps were used to analyze the diurnal nuptial flights of a Neotropical ant assemblage during five days. Traps captured 802 individuals, revealing a remarkably high diversity (42 ant species), with samples strongly male biased (1:22). Contrariwise to similar studies, we found only a small proportion of species engaged in nocturnal nuptial flights, with diurnal flights accounting for an impressive 95% of all ant flight activity recorded. For the 18 most common species, three ant groups could be identified regarding flight period: sunrise, sunset, and...

Colony cycle of the social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Torres,Viviana O.; Montagna,Thiago S.; Fernandes,Wedson D.; Antonialli-Junior,William F..
Colony cycle of the social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán (Hymenoptera, Vespidae). This study describes some aspects of the colony cycle of the Neotropical social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis, from data obtained under field conditions. Our results showed that the colony cycle in M. consimilis is annual and asynchronous in relation to the months of the year. The colonies remained active for approximately eight months. Most of the abandonments were associated with natural causes, and were most frequent in the pre-emergence stage. The nests were constructed preferentially in man-made structures, especially in sites protected from direct sunlight and rain. Colony foundation was either by haplometrosis or pleometrosis, being the first form predominant.
