| In the present work, abundance, spatial distribution and qualitative composition, of benthic marine litter, were investigated in five study areas from the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Seas (Saronikos, Patras and Echinades Gulfs; Limassol Gulf; Constanta Bay). Surveys were performed using the monitoring protocol proposed by the Technical Group for Marine Litter. Densities ranged from 24 items/km(2) to 1211 items/km(2), with the Saronikos Gulf being the most affected area. Plastics were predominant in all study areas ranging from 45.2% to 95%. Metals and Glass/Ceramics reached maximum values of 21.9% and of 22.4%. | Air pollution and sea pollution are both impacting human health and all the natural environments on Earth. These complex interactions in the biosphere are becoming better known and understood. Major progress has been made in recent past years for understanding their societal and environmental impacts, thanks to remote sensors placed aboard satellites. This paper describes the state of the art of what is known about air pollution and focuses on specific aspects of marine pollution, which all benefit from the improved knowledge of the small-scale eddy field in the oceans. | The evaluation of the ecological and economical consequences of the hydrocarbon pollution of the Erika implies the setting up of monitorings, analysis and experiments in the short, medium and long term. Among the consequences to be evaluated, a great deal of attention has to be paid to the direct impact on the biology and production performances of the main shellfish species as about 30% of the national production (around 130,000 tons of oysters and 60,000 tons of mussels per year) is cultivated in the impacted area. | Une partie importante des marais salants du Mes produit du sel à Saint-Molf et Assérac. Les marais bordant les traicts de Pen Bé et Mesquer ont été transformés en claires pour l'affinage des huîtres. Des paludiers ont recherché un complément à leur activité salicole dans l'élevage de la palourde. Par ailleurs, plusieurs entreprises ont créé un élevage de palourdes dans les marais, et sur l'estran. Les marais sont des milieux fragiles très sensibles aux diverses pollutions, notamment bactériennes, qui ont été mises en évidence par la DDASS, et par différentes études. | The aim of the present study was to confirm the relevance of studying DNA adduct formation in a field study. In that context, freshwater mussels Dreissena polymorpha, collected in a reference station, were transplanted in different sites with a pollution gradient. After one and two months, mussels were collected and DNA adduct formation was analyzed using the 32P post labelling technique on both gills and digestive glands. In addition, the expression of genes involved in the detoxification system (catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), HSP70, aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), P glycoprotein (PgP), metallothionein (MT)) was assessed by RT-PCR. | An epidemiological survey was conducted in the Seine estuary and in two smaller and relatively preserved estuaries on the French Atlantic coast in order to estimate the occurrence of liver lesions in European flounder, Platichthys flesus, and also to seek putative risk factors for the recorded pathologies. Four hundred and seventy-eight fish of both sexes and of different size ranges were sampled in the three studied areas, 338 of which in the Seine estuary. | In La Rochelle (october 1991) the following recommendations of consultative committee approved by the delegates meeting for this study group were : Attention was drawn to the fact that the study group on Pollution Meeting Shellfish in Aquaculture and Natural Populations (C.Res. 1991/2 : 45) was one of the council's first attempts to investigate the effect of pollution on fisheries. Delegates were encouraged to ensure a better representation of proper experts at the 1992 meeting since the 1991 meeting had been poorly attended. The recommendations from the Shellfish Committee were adopted by the council as C.Res. 1992/2 : 45 jointly with MEQC, Mariculture and ACMP. |
