Genealogical and molecular analysis of an Argentinean Angus seedstock herd JBAG
Corva,P.M; Colavita,M.I; Legaz,G; Martínez,M.
Introduced in Argentina from the British Isles in 1879, the Angus progressively became the most popular beef cattle breed in the country. In this article the analysis of genealogical and molecular information generated in the registration process of progenies from an Angus seedstock herd is presented. The objectives were to analyze the genetic structure of the herd, and to use the acquired information to get insight of the history of the Angus breed in Argentina. Pedigree information from 16,611 individuals born between 1954 and 2012 was analyzed, including Black and Red Angus. Also available were genotypes of 17 microsatellites from 470 individuals born between 2005 and 2012. Identification of the most influential ancestors showed a trend that is...

Genetic and ecological differentiation between the butterfly sisterspecies Colias alfacariensis and Colias hyale Naturalis
Cleary, Daniel F.R.; Descimon, Henri; Menken, Steph B.J..
Clear habitat separation between the sister species Colias alfacariensis and C. hyale is shown when occurring sympatrically. Colias hyale is found more often in moist cultivated pastures while Colias alfacariensis is more abundant in dry uncultivated habitat. Out of a total of 16 loci, no diagnostic loci were found between C. alfacariensis and C. hyale, and both species shared most major polymorphisms. Exceptions were the marked differences in allele frequencies at the HK locus and only C, hyale, but not C. alfacariensis was further invariable at the GOT2 locus, which is usually highly polymorphic in the Pieridae. Colias hyale has a significantly lower level of heterozygosity than its sister species C. alfacariensis. In Colias alfacariensis heterozygosity...

Genetic differentiation and estimated levels of gene flow in members of the Gammarus pulex-group (Crustacea, Amphipoda) in western Europe Naturalis
Scheepmaker, Maarten.
Genetic differentiation of morphologically variable members of the G. pulex-group in northwestern Europe was investigated by electrophoresis at 20 enzyme loci. Five recently described related forms were examined with reference to the “classical” species G. pulex, G. wautieri and G. fossarum. G. pulex and G. wautieri were shown to be genetically homogeneous and clearly distinct species. In the other species, morphologically similar forms were shown to be genetically distant, and inter-areal intraspecific genetic differentiation may warrant recognition of subspecies or sibling species. In some cases, levels of reproductive isolation of the forms involved could be assessed by cross-breeding experiments. To estimate dispersal capabilities, gene flow levels...

Phylogeography of the Neotropical catfish Pimelodus albicans (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) from río de la Plata basin, South America, and conservation remarks Neotropical Ichthyology
Vergara,Julia; Azpelicueta,María de las Mercedes; Garcia,Graciela.
Pimelodus albicans Valenciennes, 1840 (common name "moncholo" or "bagre blanco") is an endemic species of the family Pimelodidae in the río de la Plata basin. Phylogenetic approach based on cytochrome b sequences was performed to test the existence of a unique evolutionary lineage in P. albicans and to discriminate populations units or subpopulations related to a migration behavior of this taxon in the río de la Plata basin. This study included 34 samples of P. albicans of different collecting sites in the río de la Plata estuary and in the río Arrecifes belonging to the río Paraná basin. Among 614 base pairs in the cytochrome b sequence data set, 203 were variable and 120 were phylogenetically informative sites in P. albicans. A total of twenty...

Reproductive and population parameters of discus fish Symphysodon aequifasciatus Pellegrin, 1904 (Perciformes: Cichlidae) from Piagaçu-Purus Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS-PP), lower Purus River, Amazonas, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Rossoni,Felipe; Amadio,Sidinéia; Ferreira,Efrem; Zuanon,Jansen.
The ornamental discus fish Symphysodon aequifasciatus Pellegrin, 1904, is a popular endemic cichlid species from the Amazon basin, however scientific information concerning biology and ecology in its natural habitat is scarce despite its importance on the international aquarium trade. In this study we evaluated reproductive parameters of S. aequifasciatus in natural habitat in Piagaçu-Purus Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS-PP), lower Purus River, Brazilian Amazon. Males are more frequent in the larger size classes and this might be related to the complex breeding behavior known for S. aequifasciatus. Values of L50 for both sexes corresponded to more than 60% of the maximum attained length which may indicate that energy allocation for somatic growth...

A multi-approach analysis of the genetic diversity in populations of Astyanax aff. bimaculatus Linnaeus, 1758 (Teleostei: Characidae) from Northeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Pamponet,Vanessa de Carvalho Cayres; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Affonso,Paulo Roberto Antunes de Mello; Miranda,Viviam Souto; Silva Júnior,Juvenal Cordeiro; Oliveira,Claudine Gonçalves de; Gaiotto,Fernanda Amato.
Few reports are available about the ichthyofauna of typical semi-arid rivers, although the regional diversity has been constantly threatened by human activities, mainly related to impoundment and construction of dams. The goal of the present work was to evaluate using different methods, the population genetic structure of a characin fish, Astyanax aff. bimaculatus, widespread throughout hydrographic basins of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil. Morphological (meristic and morphometric data), cytogenetic (karyotype and Ag-NOR), and molecular (RAPD and SPAR) analyses were carried out in specimens collected upstream and downstream of Pedra Dam, in the main channel of Contas River (Contas River Basin), and in the Mineiro stream, which belongs to the adjacent Recôncavo...

Population characteristics, space use and habitat associations of the seahorse Hippocampus reidi (Teleostei: Syngnathidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Rosa,Ierecê Lucena; Oliveira,Tacyana P. R.; Castro,André L. C.; Moraes,Luiz E. de Souza; Xavier,Josias H. A.; Nottingham,Mara C.; Dias,Thelma L. P.; Bruto-Costa,Leonardo V.; Araújo,Maria E.; Birolo,Alesandra B.; Mai,Ana C. G.; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano.
This paper provides a case study of a threatened seahorse species, Hippocampus reidi, highlighting the importance of using ecological information to assist conservation and management initiatives. Underwater visual sighting data (50 x 2m transect) gathered along the NE, SE and S portions of the Brazilian coast revealed an unequal distribution across localities, perhaps related to harvesting pressure, and a mean density of 0.026 ind.m-2. Our findings suggest some restricted spatial use by H. reidi, which was consistent with its estimated home range, and with re-sighting of specimens. Reproduction was recorded year-round, however productive peaks may exist. Components of habitat structure mostly used as anchoring points were mangrove plants, macroalgae,...

Reproductive and population dynamics of the Bay whiff Citharichthys spilopterus Günther, 1862 (Pleuronectiformes: Paralichthyidae) in the Mamanguá Inlet, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Dias,June Ferraz; Fiadi,Carla Bertolucci; Silbiger,Helcy Lylian Nogueira; Soares,Lucy Satiko Hashimoto.
Bay whiffs, Citharichthys spilopterus, were sampled in Mamanguá Inlet between March 1990 and March 1992 for evaluation of its reproductive dynamic. Bay whiffs presented a crescent gradient of abundance from the deepest to the shallowest stations. The mean total length by oceanographic station showed a clear tendency of a relationship between bigger sizes and higher depths. Males predominated along the studied period and on the smallest length groups. Higher values of alometric condition factor, gonadosomatic relationship and spawning stage of maturity indicated a higher degree of development of the gonads on March and November. Histological analysis showed spawning females in March and May 1990 in the stations closer to the mouth of the Inlet, and spawned...

Reef associated molluscan fauna of the Santa Marta Area, Caribbean Coast of Colombia OceanDocs
Díaz, J.M.; Escobar, L.A.; Velásquez, L.E..

Castro S., C.; Monroy L., M.; Solano, O.D..
The epifaunal community associated with free-living colonies of Millepora alcicornis, the dominant coral species in Portete Bay, was characterized from twenty living colonies randomly collected within a shallow Thalassia testudinum seabed. The three-dimensional growth colonies sheltered 15 families, 15 genera and 18 mobile invertebrate species. The 97% of individuals was represented by decapods crustaceans specially adapted as to live in association with the host. Within them, the porcelanid Petrolisthes armatus, representing 79% of the epifauna (961 individuals), was exclusively found in a juvenile stage suggesting that M. alcicornis is mainly used by this species as a nursery zone. The epifaunal composition is partially related to coral living tissue...
