In laboratory no-choice trials, we found significant differences in susceptibility of eleven different grape varieties to oviposition of D. suzukii. However, there was no obvious effect of berry color on oviposition, since varieties with dark berries ranked among the most susceptible varieties (Cabernet Cortis and IRAC 1999), but also provided the three least susceptible varieties (Chambourcin, Prior and Blauburgunder). All varieties with white berries (Solaris, VB 32-7, Seyval Blanc, Johanniter, Prior, Bronner) and one blue variety (VB 91 26 04) ranged in between. Furthermore, sugar content and harvest date had no significant effect on oviposition. We hypothesize that fruit skin firmness affects susceptibility to oviposition of D. suzukii and suggest to... |

Organic vineyards still rely on large external inputs to control harmful organisms (i.e., pests). The BIOVINE project aims to develop natural solutions based on plant diversity to control pests and reduce pesticide dependence. The capability of plants of increasing the ecosystem resistance to pests and invasive species is a well-known ecosystem service. However, monocultures (including vineyards) do not exploit the potential of plant diversity. BIOVINE aims to develop new viticultural systems based on increased plant diversity within (e.g., cover crops) and/or around (e.g., hedges, vegetation spots, edgings) vineyards by planting selected plant species for the control of arthropods, soil-borne pests (oomycetes, fungi, nematodes), and foliar... |

The Project involves 9 research groups in 5 EU Countries. The VineMan.org Project aims at designing, developing, and testing innovative cropping systems for organic vineyards in Europe. In detail, the project focuses on enhancing organic grape production and its stability through a more efficient control of the grape diseases. The Project aims at improving disease control, which is one of the main and most difficult tasks in organic viticulture, integrating plant resistance against fungal pathogens, cropping practices, and use of BCAs depending on environmental conditions. VineMan.org is organised in 8 Work Packages (WPs), each of them led by a competent partner, and they are closely related one to each other. Management of the project activities,... |

Phytoalexins are compounds synthesised by plants in response to various stresses. In grapevines, these compounds belong to the stilbene family. Several studies have shown that resveratrol is usually triggered by infection of berries by Botrytis cinerea. In organic viticulture, grapevines are usually more stressed by attempted or successful infections of various pathogens than in conventionally grown grapevines. Furthermore, crop protection agents such as acidified clays or copper may trigger defence reactions of the plants. The aim of this study was to verify if differences between organically and conventionally produced wines exist. The preliminary results will be used as a starting point for further research of quality aspects of organic grape-vine... |

At the La Tapy Experimental Station in southeastern France, a plot of table grapes is managed according to the principles of organic farming in order to study potential technical impediments of this growing system compared to another plot that is managed according to the principles of sustainable agriculture. Muscat de Hambourg, the variety common to these two plots, is used as a reference for the different observations. Results are primarily related to the impact of pest management efficiency on vine quality. The qualitative requirement that powdery mildew be absent on table grapes is difficult to fulfil in the case of organic farming, even with several different treatments and frequent applications. Botrytis management is related to climatic conditions;... |

The project examines the control of downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) in organic viticulture based on copper replacement and copper reduction strategies, respectively. The replacement agents or the new copper formulations with minimised copper dose will be integrated into the “organic standard” strategy, which additionally aims at the control of other pests and diseases. The following agents were tested: plant strengtheners, plant extracts and stone meals. Despite unclear situations regarding commercialisation and registration purposes, respectively, bacterial antagonists and phosphoric acid were also included. After a screening on potted vines, agents were tested in the test-vineyards of six different research stations for viticulture and plant... |
