MAZONI, I.; BORRO, L. C.; JARDINE, J. G.; YANO, I. H.; SALIM, J. A.; NESHICH, G..
Protein secondary structure elements (PSSEs) such as [alfa]-helices, [beta]-strands, and turns are the primary building blocks of the tertiary protein structure. Our primary interest here is to reveal the characteristics of the nanoenvironment formed by both PSSEs and their surrounding amino acid residues (AARs), which might contribute to the general understanding of how proteins fold.

Cephalic secretion of Arapaima gigas: sex steroids, peptides and proteins suggest roles in chemical communication and parental care. Repositório Alice
TORATI, L. S.; ALBALAT, A.; MESQUITA, P. E.; TAYLOR, J.; MIGAUD, H..
Adults of the Amazon fish Arapaima gigas secrete a fluid from the cephalic canals of the lateral line system, whose biological role(s) along the reproductive cycle are unclear. Up-todate, the biochemical composition of this fluid has been poorly investigated in A. gigas as well as other teleosts. Hence, this study aimed to (1) investigate the potential pheromone release through this cephalic fluid, and (2) to characterise its proteome and peptidome by comparing males and females during and outside the parental care phase.

Electrophoretic behavior of ewe milk proteins from local breeds Rembi and Ouled-Djellal of the Algerian central steppe Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Zobiri-Illoul,Assia; Yabrir,Benalia; Laoun,Abbas; Mati,Abderrahmane.
Abstract In order to characterize the production of sheep milk in Algeria (North of Africa) and to detect molecular markers related to the constitution of the protein phase of this milk, we proposed to analyze the electrophoretic behaviors of caseins and serum proteins under various migration conditions (native, urea and SDS-PAGE), from milk collected during the first three months of the year, from two breeds Ouled-Djellal and Rembi, living in the central area steppe. The profiles obtained show a great similarity and homogeneity between the different samples of the milk of the two breeds of ewes studied as to the number and intensity of the revealed migration bands. Some of the latter are nevertheless distinguished from cow’s milk by different levels of...

Taxonomic value of histochemical features of the style in early lineages of Asteraceae Acta Botanica
Hernández,Marcelo Paulo; Katinas,Liliana; Arambarri,Ana María.
In this paper we examine lipophilic substances, tannins, proteins, reducing carbohydrates, starch, and oxalate salts in early lineages of Asteraceae to test if they are a useful complement to classification studies. Styles of mature flowers of 44 species were processed according to plant histochemical techniques and observed by means of a light microscope. Lipophilic compounds were always present in the cuticle and cell walls, and in some species were located inside the cells. Proteins were located in the style cell walls and cell interior of most of the analyzed species. No tannins were found. In general, there is a correlation in the presence of reducing sugars and proteins. Starch granules and oxalate salts were found in the style parenchyma of a few...

Evaluation of protein extraction methods for enhanced proteomic analysis of tomato leaves and roots Anais da ABC (AABC)
VILHENA,MILCA B.; FRANCO,MÔNICA R.; SCHMIDT,DAIANA; CARVALHO,GISELLE; AZEVEDO,RICARDO A..
Proteomics is an outstanding area in science whose increasing application has advanced to distinct purposes. A crucial aspect to achieve a good proteome resolution is the establishment of a methodology that results in the best quality and wide range representation of total proteins. Another important aspect is that in many studies, limited amounts of tissue and total protein in the tissue to be studied are found, making difficult the analysis. In order to test different parameters, combinations using minimum amount of tissue with 4 protocols for protein extraction from tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) leaves and roots were evaluated with special attention to their capacity for removing interferents and achieving suitable resolution in bidimensional gel...

Ion-specific thermodynamical properties of aqueous proteins Anais da ABC (AABC)
Lima,Eduardo R.A.; Biscaia Jr.,Evaristo C.; Boström,Mathias; Tavares,Frederico W..
Ion-specific interactions between two colloidal particles are calculated using a modified Poisson-Boltzmann (PB)equationandMonteCarlo(MC)simulations. PBequationspresentgoodresultsofionicconcentration profiles around a macroion, especially for salt solutions containing monovalent ions. These equations include not only electrostatic interactions, but also dispersion potentials originated from polarizabilities of ions and proteins. This enables us to predict ion-specific properties of colloidal systems. We compared results obtained from the modified PB equation with those from MC simulations and integral equations. Phase diagrams and osmotic second virial coefficients are also presented for different salt solutions at different pH and ionic strengths, in...

Proteins and Peptides at the Interfaces of Nanostructures Anais da ABC (AABC)
BRITO,ADRIANNE M.M.; BELLETI,ELISANGELA; MENEZES,LUCIVALDO R.; LANFREDI,ALEXANDRE J.C.; NANTES-CARDOS,ISELI L..
Abstract: The present review focuses on the proteins and peptides at the interfaces of nanostructured metals and semiconductors as a result of their use in synthesis in-situ and functionalization of nanostructures. We start the review with an introduction about the peculiar properties of nanostructured materials and their applications. In the following, the chemical and structural properties of peptides and proteins that allow their use as reducing, stabilizing, and functionalization agents are discussed. Proteins and peptides have not only the chemical groups for the metal ion reducing but also provide templates for directing the crystalline growing of nanostructures to the desired shapes and sizes. Proteins and peptides are also used mainly for the...

Seed reserve composition and mobilization during germination and early seedling establishment of Cereus jamacaru D.C. ssp. jamacaru (Cactaceae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Alencar,Nara L.M.; Innecco,Renato; Gomes-Filho,Enéas; Gallão,Maria Izabel; Alvarez-Pizarro,Juan C.; Prisco,José T.; Oliveira,Alexandre B. De.
Cereus jamacaru, a Cactaceae found throughout northeast Brazil, is widely used as cattle food and as an ornamental and medicinal plant. However, there has been little information about the physiological and biochemical aspects involved in its germination. The aim of this study was to investigate its reserve mobilization during germination and early seedling growth. For this, C. jamacaru seeds were germinated in a growth chamber and collected at 0, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 12 days after imbibition for morphological and biochemical analyses. Dry seeds had wrinkled seed coats and large, curved embryos. Lipids were the most abundant reserve, comprising approximately 55% and 65% of the dry mass for cotyledons and the hypocotylradicle axis, respectively. Soluble sugars...

Temperature-dependent alterations in metabolic enzymes and proteins of three ecophysiologically different species of earthworms BABT
Tripathi,G; Kachhwaha,N.; Dabi,I.; Bandooni,N..
The effects of varying temperatures (12 - 44° C) on the specific activity of cytoplasmic malate dehydrogenase ((cMDH), mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase (mMDH) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) of some earthworms (Metaphire posthuma, Perionyx sansibaricus and Lampito mauritii) were studied. The effects of different temperatures on supernatant and mitochondrial protein contents were also investigated. The specific activities of cMDH, mMDH and LDH of the earthworms decreased gradually as a function of increasing temperature from 12 to 44°C. Higher metabolic energy was needed to maintain the activity at low temperatures. Hence, the earthworms showed increased enzyme specific activity at low temperatures. However, the protein content increased upto 28°C....
