High-impact exercise in rats prior to and during suspension can prevent bone loss BJMBR
Yanagihara,G.R.; Paiva,A.G.; Gasparini,G.A.; Macedo,A.P.; Frighetto,P.D.; Volpon,J.B.; Shimano,A.C..
High-impact exercise has been considered an important method for treating bone loss in osteopenic experimental models. In this study, we investigated the effects of osteopenia caused by inactivity in femora and tibiae of rats subjected to jump training using the rat tail suspension model. Eight-week-old female Wistar rats were divided into five groups (n=10 each group): jump training for 2 weeks before suspension and training during 3 weeks of suspension; jump training for 2 weeks before suspension; jump training only during suspension; suspension without any training; and a control group. The exercise protocol consisted of 20 jumps/day, 5 days/week, with a jump height of 40 cm. The bone mineral density of the femora and tibiae was measured by double...

In vitro biofilm forming potential of Streptococcus suis isolated from human and swine in China BJM
Dawei,Guo; Liping,Wang; Chengping,Lu.
Streptococcus suis is a swine pathogen and also a zoonotic agent. The formation of biofilms allows S. suis to become persistent colonizers and resist clearance by the host immune system and antibiotics. In this study, biofilm forming potentials of various S. suis strains were characterized by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tissue culture plates stained with crystal violet. In addition, the effects of five antimicrobial agents on biofilm formation were assayed in this study. S. suis produced biofilms on smooth and rough surface. The nutritional contents including glucose and NaCl in the growth medium modulated biofilm formation. There was a significant difference in their biofilm-forming ability among all 46...

Structure of xanthan gum and cell ultrastructure at different times of alkali stress BJM
Luvielmo,Márcia de Mello; Borges,Caroline Dellinghausen; Toyama,Daniela de Oliveira; Vendruscolo,Claire Tondo; Scamparini,Adilma Regina Pippa.
Abstract The effect of alkali stress on the yield, viscosity, gum structure, and cell ultrastructure of xanthan gum was evaluated at the end of fermentation process of xanthan production by Xanthomonas campestris pv. manihotis 280-95. Although greater xanthan production was observed after a 24 h-alkali stress process, a lower viscosity was observed when compared to the alkali stress-free gum, regardless of the alkali stress time. However, this outcome is not conclusive as further studies on gum purification are required to remove excess sodium, verify the efficiency loss and the consequent increase in the polymer viscosity. Alkali stress altered the structure of xanthan gum from a polygon-like shape to a star-like form. At the end of the fermentation,...

Effect of fungicide on Fusarium verticillioidesmycelial morphology and fumonisin B1 production BJM
Miguel,Tatiana de Á.; Bordini,Jaqueline G.; Saito,Gervásio H.; Andrade,Célia G.T. de J.; Ono,Mario A.; Hirooka,Elisa Y.; Vizoni,Édio; Ono,Elisabete Y.S..
The effect of fludioxonil + metalaxyl-M on the mycelial morphology, sporulation and fumonisin B1 production by Fusarium verticillioides 103 F was evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that the fungicide caused inhibition of hyphal growth and defects on hyphae morphology such as cell wall disruption, withered hyphae, and excessive septation. In addition, extracellular material around the hyphae was rarely observed in the presence of fludioxonil + metalaxyl-M. While promoting the reduction of mycelial growth, the fungicide increased sporulation of F. verticillioides compared to the control, and the highest production occurred on the 14th day in the treatments and on the 10th day in the control cultures. Fumonisin B1production in the culture...

Architecture and relevance of several strongly adhered biofilms over a polyester imide (PEI) surface BJM
Soncini-Júnior,Giancarlo; Franchetti,Sandra Mara Martins; Marconato,José Carlos.
A microscopical study was undertaken to analyze the eventual fungi adhesion over a polyester imide surface in enameled copper wires. Scanning electron microscopy allowed to observe in these adhered biofilms, a high amount of pigments, hyphae and its enzymatic arsenal probably acting in the surface of the polymer. Due to the highly aromatic nature of this polyester and the residual phenol derivates still present in the reticulated polymer, an antifungal activity could be expected, but no significant changes were noted in fungal growing and in the adhesion process. Additionally, the wires showed completely failure in all insulation properties. The studies aimed to understand and evaluate the great fungi potential that could be explored in biodeterioration...

Leaf Surface Scanning Electron Microscopy of 16 Mulberry Genotypes (Morus spp.) with Respect to their Feeding Value in Silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) Rearing Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Singhal,B.K; Baqual,M.F; Khan,M.A; Bindroo,B.B; Dhar,A.
Mulberry (Morus spp.) is the only silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) food plant. In Indian sub tropics, S-146 is the only popular and ruling mulberry genotype for silkworm rearing. As a result, mulberry leaf availability is always the limiting factor, and therefore, sub tropics are contributing less than 1% of the country’s total silk production compared with more than 60% under tropical conditions. Besides climatic conditions, this is due to a very limited number of mulberry genotypes available in this region for silkworm rearing. However, in the mean time, 15 mulberry genotypes viz. ‘Tr-10’,‘Chinese White’,‘K-2’,‘Sujanpur...

Ultrastructural morphology and morphometry of the normal corneal endothelium of adult crossbred pig Ciência Rural
Tamayo-Arango,Lynda Jhailú; Baraldi-Artoni,Silvana Martinez; Laus,José Luiz; Vicenti,Felipe Antonio Mendes; Pigatto,João Antonio; Abib,Fernando Cesar.
Corneal endothelium constitutes a monolayer of polygonal cells. The integrity and health of this layer are essential for the maintenance of normal corneal transparency. This study reported by the first time in a detailed way the ultrastructural morphology and morphometry of the corneal endothelium in normal adult crossbred pigs by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A regular pattern of polygonal cells, with predominantly hexagonal cells and clear cell borders, was observed. An oval nucleus that bulges in the centre of the cell, cilia (2-4) in a few peripheral cells, openings of the pinocytotic vesicles, microvilli, borders bars and interdigitated cell borders were observed. The mean endothelial cell area was significantly higher (P<0.05) in the...

In vitro callus induction and development of Vernonia condensata Baker with embryogenic potential Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Rodrigues,Fabíola Rebouças; Almeida,Weliton Antonio Bastos de; Ledo,Carlos Alberto da Silva; Soares,Taliane Leila; Rossi,Mônica Lanzoni; Santana,José Raniere Ferreira de.
ABSTRACT Vernonia condensata Baker has been traditionally used in folk medicine for the treatment of several inflammatory and infectious processes. Overexploitation of this plant species has drastically reduced its population in its natural habitat (Cerrado). Therefore, tissue culture tools, such as somatic embryogenesis, can be used as an alternative method for rapid and large-scale plant regeneration. The objectives of this study were to induce callogenesis in Vernonia condensata from different types of explants and to evaluate the structural aspects of the development of pro-embryogenic masses of this species by means of histological analyses. The formation of calli was induced from leaf explants and internodal segments, which were inoculated in EME...

Morphology and pollen viability of Lolium multiflorum Lam. Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Nunes,Renata de Castro; Bustamante,Fernanda de Oliveira; Techio,Vânia Helena; Mittelmann,Andréa.
Study and characterization of pollen grains are essential for different areas, especially taxonomy, genetic improvement, phylogeny, and paleobotany. As yet, there are no reports on pollen morphology of genotypes of naturalized Lolium multiflorum Lam., introduced cultivars or breeding populations, diploid or polyploid. Ten genotypes of annual ryegrass (L. multiflorum) were evaluated for the viability of pollen grains using propionic carmine and Alexander's stains, while morphology was assessed by the acetolysis technique. Measures of polar axis (P), equatorial diameter (E), exine thickness, and analysis of pollen grains were obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All genotypes showed high rate of pollen viability (> 89%) for both stains. There...
