Several studies have suggested that significant genetic variability might exist for some early developmental traits in the Pacific oyster, C. gigas. However, most studies have examined only limited numbers of families. More critically, these families were rarely replicated, leading to possible bias due to heterogeneous larval rearing conditions among families. To overcome these potential problems, we used a mixed-family approach with subsequent parentage analysis. A recently developed set of three multiplexed microsatellite markers was used to determine parentage in a complete factorial cross between 12 males and 4 females. We estimated the heritability of growth-related traits (weight and length at ages one summer, first spring and two summers) in a synthetic mirror carp strain (HSM) in the Czech Republic. The four generation pedigree was obtained from parentage assignment of three factorial mating designs with microsatellite markers, and included 195 fish without phenotypes (48 G0, 147 G1) and 1321 fish with phenotypes (674 G2, 647 G3). Animal model heritability estimates over generations were in the range 0.21-0.33 for length and in the range 0.31-0.44 for weight. The genetic correlation between length and weight was high (0.97). Oyster species suffer from numerous disease outbreaks, often causing high mortality. Because the environment cannot be controlled, genetic improvement for disease resistance to pathogens is an attractive option to reduce their impact on oyster production. We review the literature on selective breeding programs for disease resistance in oyster species, and the impact of triploidy on such resistance. Open ocean zooplankton often have been viewed as slowly evolving species that have limited capacity to respond adaptively to changing ocean conditions. Hence, attention has focused on the ecological responses of zooplankton to current global change, including range shifts and changing phenology.
