Using numerical classification of profiles based on Vis-NIR spectra to distinguish soils from the Piracicaba Region, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Rizzo,Rodnei; Demattê,José A. M.; Terra,Fabrício da Silva.
Considering that information from soil reflectance spectra is underutilized in soil classification, this paper aimed to evaluate the relationship of soil physical, chemical properties and their spectra, to identify spectral patterns for soil classes, evaluate the use of numerical classification of profiles combined with spectral data for soil classification. We studied 20 soil profiles from the municipality of Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil, which were morphologically described and classified up to the 3rd category level of the Brazilian Soil Classification System (SiBCS). Subsequently, soil samples were collected from pedogenetic horizons and subjected to soil particle size and chemical analyses. Their Vis-NIR spectra were measured, followed by...

Characteristics of Soils in Highland Wetlands as a Subsidy to Identifying and Setting their Limits Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Warmling,Maria Tereza; Albuquerque,Jackson Adriano; Almeida,Jaime Antonio de; Warmling,Maria Izabel.
ABSTRACT Palustrine areas and wetlands in particular are fragile ecosystems, with high biodiversity and high ecological productivity, and they provide benefits to society. The aim of this study was to describe and classify the main soils occurring in the wetlands of the Southern Plateau of Santa Catarina, and propose criteria for identification of hydromorphic environments as an aid in demarcation of their boundaries. Soils of four wetlands, in the municipalities of Bom Jardim da Serra, Bom Retiro, Lages, and Painel were described, collected, and taxonomically classified. A transection was demarcated in each one in which soils were analyzed in sites with different degrees of hydromorphism, corresponding to the inner, transition, and outer areas. In...

Digital Soil Mapping Using Machine Learning Algorithms in a Tropical Mountainous Area Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Meier,Martin; Souza,Eliana de; Francelino,Marcio Rocha; Fernandes Filho,Elpídio Inácio; Schaefer,Carlos Ernesto Gonçalves Reynaud.
ABSTRACT: Increasingly, applications of machine learning techniques for digital soil mapping (DSM) are being used for different soil mapping purposes. Considering the variety of models available, it is important to know their performance in relation to soil data and environmental variables involved in soil mapping. This paper investigated the performance of eight machine learning algorithms for soil mapping in a tropical mountainous area of an official rural settlement in the Zona da Mata region in Brazil. Morphometric maps generated from a digital elevation model, together with Landsat-8 satellite imagery, and climatic maps, were among the set of covariates to be selected by the Recursive Feature Elimination algorithm to predict soil types using machine...

Boundary between Soil and Saprolite in Alisols in the South of Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Pedron,Fabrício de Araújo; Oliveira,Rodrigo Bomicieli de; Dalmolin,Ricardo Simão Diniz; Azevedo,Antonio Carlos de; Kilca,Ricardo Vargas.
Despite numerous studies conducted on the lower limit of soil and its contact with saprolite layers, a great deal of work is left to standardize identification and annotation of these variables in the field. In shallow soils, the appropriately noting these limits or contacts is essential for determining their behavior and potential use. The aims of this study were to identify and define the field contact and/or transition zone between soil and saprolite in profiles of an Alisol derived from fine sandstone and siltstone/claystone in subtropical southern Brazil and to subsequently validate the field observations through a multivariate analysis of laboratory analytical data. In the six Alisol profiles evaluated, the sequence of horizons found was A, Bt, C,...

Genesis and classification of Oxisols in a highland toposequence of the upper Jequitinhonha Valley (MG) Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ferreira,Celmo Aparecido; Silva,Alexandre Christófaro; Torrado,Pablo Vidal; Rocha,Welington Willian.
The Brazilian System of Soil Classification (SiBCS) is a taxonomic system, open and in permanent construction, as new knowledge on Brazilian soils is obtained. The objective of this study was to characterize the chemical, physical, morphological, micro-morphological and mineralogical properties of four pedons of Oxisols in a highland toposequence in the upper Jequitinhonha Valley, emphasizing aspects of their genesis, classification and landscape development. The pedons occupy the following slope positions: summit - Red Oxisol (LV), mid slope (upper third) - Yellow-Red Oxisol (LVA), lower slope (middle third)- Yellow Oxisol (LA) and bottom of the valley (lowest third) - "Gray Oxisol" ("LAC"). These pedons were described and sampled for characterization in...

Spodosols pedogenesis under barreiras formation and sandbank environments in the south of Bahia Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Oliveira,Aline Pacobahyba de; Ker,João Carlos; Silva,Ivo Ribeiro da; Fontes,Maurício Paulo Ferreira; Oliveira,Alessandra Pacobahyba de; Neves,Alan Tadeu Goyatá.
Morphologically differentiated Spodosols usually occur in the Coastal Plain of the South of Bahia and North of Espírito Santo. They are found in profiles known as "muçungas", i.e. sandy soils that accumulate water. In these areas, two kinds of Spodosols, different from those in the Restinga area, can be found: Spodosols with E albic horizon (white muçunungas) and without this horizon (black muçunungas). Eight soil profiles with spodic characteristics were collected and described in order to evaluate differences in the formation process of Barreiras and Restinga Spodosols in the South of Bahia. The soil profiles were also characterized chemically, physically and mineralogically. Additionally, texture and chemical analysis, Fe and Al extraction by sodium...

Soil spectral library and its use in soil classification Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Bellinaso,Henrique; Demattê,José Alexandre Melo; Romeiro,Suzana Araújo.
Soil science has sought to develop better techniques for the classification of soils, one of which is the use of remote sensing applications. The use of ground sensors to obtain soil spectral data has enabled the characterization of these data and the advancement of techniques for the quantification of soil attributes. In order to do this, the creation of a soil spectral library is necessary. A spectral library should be representative of the variability of the soils in a region. The objective of this study was to create a spectral library of distinct soils from several agricultural regions of Brazil. Spectral data were collected (using a Fieldspec sensor, 350-2,500 nm) for the horizons of 223 soil profiles from the regions of Matão, Paraguaçu Paulista,...

Relationships between soil class and nutritional status of coffee plantations Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Wadt,Paulo Guilherme Salvador.
Farm planning requires an assessment of the soil class. Research suggest that the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) has the capacity to evaluate the nutritional status of coffee plantations, regardless of environmental conditions. Additionally, the use of DRIS could reduce the costs for farm planning. This study evaluated the relationship between the soil class and nutritional status of coffee plants (Coffea canephora Pierre) using the Critical Level (CL) and DRIS methods, based on two multivariate statistical methods (discriminant and multidimensional scaling analyses). During three consecutive years, yield and foliar concentration of nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Zn, Mn, Fe and Cu) were obtained from coffee plantations cultivated...

Soil genesis and iron nodules in a karst environment of the Apodi Plateau Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Girão,Rodrigo de Oliveira; Moreira,Leo Jakson da Silva; Girão,Ana Leônia de Araújo; Romero,Ricardo Espíndola; Ferreira,Tiago Osório.
The Apodi Plateau, located in the northeastern part of the state of Ceará in Brazil, has limestone as its parent material, with significant variation in the soils formed in this region, as well as the presence of iron nodules, having been identified. The iron oxides have been used as indicators for evaluating the weathering processes of some soils, with the nodules being sources of information about pedogenic processes. Seeking to evaluate the influence of the karstic parent material and of the iron nodules on soil genesis in the Apodi Plateau, the morphological, physical and chemical properties of five profiles were evaluated, as well as of the iron nodules present in some horizons. The profiles were classified as RED-YELLOW ARGISOL Abruptic eutrophic...

Sombric horizon: five decades without evolution Scientia Agricola
Almeida,Jaime Antonio de; Lunardi Neto,Antônio; Vidal-Torrado,Pablo.
The sombric horizon is a diagnostic subsurface horizon defined in the soil classification system of the United States (Soil Taxonomy) and FAO (WRB), used to classify the soil at different categorical levels. The sombric horizon has a soil color darker than the overlying surface(s) horizon(s), and must show illuvial humus accumulation features, though they are not associated with aluminum (Al), as in the spodic horizon, nor associated with sodium (Na), as in the natric horizon. There are also criteria to distinguish it from buried A horizons. However, since the first references and proposed concept of the sombric horizon in African soils made by Sys and co-workers in the 1960s, and adopted by the Soil Taxonomy edition of 1975, few modifications have been...

Spectral behavior of some modal soil profiles from São Paulo State, Brazil Bragantia
Demattê,José Alexandre Melo; Terra,Fabrício da Silva; Quartaroli,Carlos Fernando.
Remote sensing has a high potential for environmental evaluation. However, a necessity exists for a better understanding of the relations between the soil attributes and spectral data. The objective of this work was to analyze the spectral behavior of some soil profiles from the region of Piracicaba, São Paulo State, using a laboratory spectroradiometer (400 to 2500 nm). The relations between the reflected electromagnetic energy and the soil physical, chemical and mineralogical attributes were analyzed, verifying the spectral variations of soil samples in depth along the profiles with their classification and discrimination. Sandy soil reflected more, presenting a spectral curve with an ascendant form, opposite to clayey soils. The 1900 nm band...

USLE/RUSLE K-factors allocated through a linear mixed model for Uruguayan soils Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Beretta-Blanco,Andrés; Carrasco-Letelier,Leonidas.
Soil erosion by rainfall is a process that demands management, both for the prevention of excessive soil erosion and for the protection of the quality of freshwater bodies. Erosion coefficients (K-factors) of the universal soil loss equation (USLE)/revised USLE (RUSLE) model were assigned to 99 mapped Uruguayan soil types at 1:1,000,000 scale. This work developed a linear mixed model (LMM) with 79 soils with assigned K-factors, in which the following variables were considered: soil taxonomy, chemical composition, and parent material. The developed LMM had an R²=0.86, in which the soil taxonomy (p<0.0001), parent material (p=0.0174), clay (p=0.0005) and sand (p=0.017) contents had significant statistical effects. The prediction capacity of this model was...
