Relationship Among Crop Systems, Soil Cover, and Water Erosion on a Typic Hapludox Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Lima,Pedro Luiz Terra; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Quinton,John Norman; Batista,Pedro Velloso Gomes; Cândido,Bernardo Moreira; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Several soil conservation practices are used to reduce water erosion and ensure sustainable agriculture. An effective crop management practice is intercropping, in which two or more crops with different architectures and vegetative cycles are grown simultaneously in the same area. We hypothesized that intercropping of corn and jack-bean increases soil cover and reduce soil erosion by water in comparison to monocropping. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different crop systems on soil cover and on soil erosion by water. Soil and water losses from a Typic Hapludox were measured under the following systems: corn cultivation (CO), jack-bean cultivation (JB), intercropping of corn and jack-bean (IC), and bare soil (BS), as a...

Institutional landmarks in Brazilian research on soil erosion: a historical overview Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Telles,Tiago Santos; Dechen,Sonia Carmela Falci; Guimarães,Maria de Fátima.
The problem of soil erosion in Brazil has been a focus of agricultural scientific research since the 19th century. The aim of this study was to provide a historical overview of the institutional landmarks which gave rise to the first studies in soil erosion and established the foundations of agricultural research in Brazil. The 19th century and beginning of the 20th century saw the founding of a series of institutions in Brazil, such as Botanical Gardens, executive institutions, research institutes, experimental stations, educational institutions of agricultural sciences, as well as the creation and diversification of scientific journals. These entities, each in its own way, served to foster soil erosion research in Brazil. During the Imperial period...

Inter-relation between soybean yield and soil compaction under degraded pasture in Brazilian Savannah Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Queiroz,Rienni de Paula; Lazarini,Edson; Santos,Marcio Lustosa; Carvalho,Morel de Passos e; Santos,Cristiano.
The Cerrado (Brazilian Savannah) plays an important economic and financial role in the nation, since the pastures of this biome feed cattle for half of the domestic bovine meat productivity, and its agricultural fields produce a third of the country's grain. The variability and spatial dependence between the soil physical attributes and soybean yield were evaluated in a crop rotation planted on a degraded brachiaria pasture, on a dystroferric Red Latosol of an experimental farm of the State University of São Paulo (UNESP), in the 2005/2006 growing season. The linear and spatial correlations between these attributes were also studied, to determine conditions that would allow increased agricultural productivity. In the above pasture area, a grid was...

Erosive rainfall in Rio do Peixe Valley in Santa Catarina, Brazil: Part I - Determination of the erosivity index AGRIAMBI
Back,Álvaro J.; Pola,Augusto C.; Ladwig,Nilzo I.; Schwalm,Hugo.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the rainfall erosivity index in the Valley of Rio do Peixe, in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The data series of three rain gauge stations in the cities of Campos Novos, Videira, and Caçador were used to determine the rainfall erosivity based on the EI30 index and to adjust the equations in order to estimate the EI30 value from the rainfall coefficient. On average, it was observed that erosive rains represents 81.4-88.5% of the annual precipitation. The adjusted equations can be used to estimate rainfall erosivity in locations with only rainfall data. The regional equation specified for the erosivity estimation is EI30 = 74.23 Rc0.8087. The R factor is 8,704.8; 7,340.8; and 6,387.1 MJ mm ha-1 h-1 year-1 for...

Carbon stocks of an Oxisol after thirty-eight years under different tillage systems AGRIAMBI
Magalhaes,Sulamirtes S. de A.; Ramos,Fabricio T.; Weber,Oscarlina L. dos S..
ABSTRACT Soil carbon (C) stock determination can subsidize discussions on the continuity of an agricultural management. This study aimed to evaluate the stocks of total organic C (STOC) and labile C (SLC), and the indices of C lability (CLI), C compartment (CCI) and C management (CMI), and correlate them with chemical and physical attributes of a Red Yellow Latosol (Oxisol) managed for 38 years with different tillage systems in a Cerrado region of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected in three layers (0-0.05, 0.05-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m). The CMI (CLI x CCI) showed higher STOC possibly as the tillage depth decreased, because none of the tillage systems conserved STOC and SLC in the layers of 0-0.05 and 0.05-0.10 m,...

Valuation and assessment of soil erosion costs Scientia Agricola
Telles,Tiago Santos; Dechen,Sonia Carmela Falci; Souza,Luiz Gustavo Antonio de; Guimarães,Maria de Fátima.
Soil is an essential natural resource for humans and an important part of the environment. However, soil is often used and managed inappropriately, causing its erosion and degradation, with concomitantly negative social, political and economic impacts. This study aimed to discuss sustainable development; and losses and problems caused by soil erosion, and to suggest a model for assessing erosion costs. The relevance of economic models for costing soil erosion is stressed. Based on an economic theory, it presents a procedure for assessing economic costs of soil erosion, centered on the on-site and off-site costs that are generated. The physical processes of soil erosion are described and their economic effects reviewed, drawing on theoretical and empirical...

Assessing rainfall erosivity indices through synthetic precipitation series and artificial neural networks Anais da ABC (AABC)
CECíLIO,ROBERTO A.; MOREIRA,MICHEL C.; PEZZOPANE,JOSé EDUARDO M.; PRUSKI,FERNANDO F.; FUKUNAGA,DANILO C..
The rainfall parameter that expresses the capacity to promote soil erosion is called rainfall erosivity (R), and is commonly represented by the indexes EI30 and KE>25. The calculations of these indexes requires pluviographical records, that are difficult to obtain in Brazil. This paper describes the use of synthetic rainfall series to compute EI30 and KE>25 in Espírito Santo State (Brazil). Artificial neural networks (ANNs) were also developed to spatially interpolate R values in Espírito Santo. EI30 and KE>25 indexes values were close to those calculated on a homogeneous area according to the similarity of rainfall distribution; indicating the applicability of the use of synthetic rainfall series to estimate the R factor. ANNs had a better...

Water Erosion Prediction Using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) in a GIS Framework, Central Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Bonilla,Carlos A; Reyes,José L; Magri,Antoni.
Soil erosion is a growing problem in Central Chile, particularly in coastal dry lands, where it can significantly decrease the productivity of rainfed agriculture and forestry. In this study, the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS), and used to evaluate the effects of different combinations of vegetative cover on soil erosion rates for Santo Domingo County in Central Chile. Implementing RUSLE in the GIS required a complete description of the county’s soils, climate, topography and current land use/land cover. This information was compiled in rasters of 25 x 25 m cells. RUSLE parameter values were assigned to each cell and annual soil loss estimates were generated on a cell by cell basis....

Estimates of soil losses by the erosion potential method in tropical latosols Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Lense,Guilherme Henrique Expedito; Parreiras,Taya Cristo; Moreira,Rodrigo Santos; Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Mincato,Ronaldo Luiz.
ABSTRACT Water erosion is one of the main problems faced in coffee cultivation, as it promotes environmental degradation and crop yield decrease. Erosion estimates support the planning of conservation management practices and allowing determining the rates of soil losses. Thus, the objective of this paper was to estimate the soil loss by water erosion using the Erosion Potential Method in a sub-basin predominantly covered by coffee cultivation and then to compare the results with the Soil Loss Tolerance limits. The study area is the Coroado Stream Sub-basin, located at Alfenas Municipality, south of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The sub-basin presented an Erosion Coefficient of 0.272, indicating a predominance of low-intensity erosion. The total soil loss estimate...

Soil cover plants on water erosion control in the South of Minas Gerais Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Dias,Adriana Cristina; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Freitas,Diego Antonio França de; Batista,Pedro Velloso Gomes; Curi,Nilton; Carvalho,Gabriel José de.
Water erosion is responsible for soil, water, carbon and nutrient losses, turning into the most important type of degradation of Brazilian soils. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of three cover plants under two tillage systems on water erosion control in an Argisol at south of Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The cover plants utilized in the study were pigeon pea, jack bean and millet, under contour seeding and downslope tillage. Experimental plots of 4 x 12 m, with 9% slope, under natural rainfall were used for the quantification of losses of soil, water, nutrients, and organic matter. One experimental plot was kept without plant cover (reference). Higher erosivity was observed in December and January, although a great quantity of erosive rainfall...
